  1. I would like us to resign Kovalchuk. I thought it was a bad pick up at the time because I wanted a better draft pick. But i was wrong and it was a good pick up by Bergevin. We finally have a balance forward group , and if in the off season  we add a top playmaking D we could have a really good team. But what I would do is fill his contract full on bonuses, give him something like 4.5mil plus 2mil in bonuses.  6.5mil I think he would stay. We can trade Byron to clear up even more cap space.

Also have signed, Semin-Ott-Gonchar-Hemsky-King-Briere who flopped and being a healthy scratch isnt a good sign at all for a 26yr old $4.5m/yr player.

Would Chiarot-Mete-Romanov-Kulak and this guy solidify left side enough?

I guess trading a Armia or Lehkonen for him might be worthwhile and he is signed for several more years.

If I am going to trade anyone its going to be lehkonen. Armia is better and the power forward we have been looking for. Lehkonen and Byron to me are expendable

All reliable sources (ie mckenzie, lebrun, friedman) suggest he wont sign with anyone til the summer... if he even signs at all.

Ill take their word for it over the eklund rumour i found when i googled byfuglien habs rumour.

Because kovy going to try and get as much points as he can,  and lets his numbers speak for themselves. He's going to try and get as much money as he can.

Oh and then there is the sarcasm.

Anything to avoid the actual point that there are two clearly seperate plans.  One that involves a rebuild starting after the 2018 season.

No one is saying hes perfect.

But we are saying to judge him based on the actual plan...  he failed in plan 1 to build a consistent contender.

In 2018 he went into rebuild mode and so the results have to be taken into account with that in mind.

There are plenty of areas for criticism.

Arguing in circles over the same areas that have already been addressed as a bit of an unfair critique... doesnt exactly get us anywhere

When I judge Bergevin its based on the on ice product. The first 3 years I give him leeway on because that's still part of the old GM. But after 8 years I don't give him leeway on the NHL team, this is his team his plan, and what ever happens with this team is on him. As long as he continues to miss the playoffs he should be held accountable.

I don't want to hear it's a reset because its been 3 years now and a reset should be over.

That monkey would still have drafted better then 2008 through 2017

18 19 may be better but who knows

Remember it's not just about drafting, player development and drafting go hand n hand. Like I had said player development under Bergevin before the reset was garbage and we're feeling the effects of it now with no NHL ready players coming up from our farm system.

For 10 years? Give me a break, they have exactly 2 players on the roster the black hole years

and if MB threw away picks, thats on him, they have been inept

Picking from 20-32 we have had 0 players make any impact in the NHL.

Picking from 10-20 we have had MCdonagh, Pacioretty,  make impacts in the NHL with Poehling still a question mark.

So the years we were a playoff team we Were picking from 22-32.  We missed on all of them  which we're feeling the affect of it now.

Best excuse is pathetic drafting, leadership and an actual plan

I added a link to the drafting black hole in another post, I couldn't believe how bad it was until i read it

2008 through at least 2017 was a train wreck and the guy in charge of that drafting department got promoted, that is insane

It was bad because he still believed that the old school way of hockey still worked. So he told Tim's to look for big gritty guys and that's who they were drafting. Not one of them panned out. When he started the reset he change and started drafting skill and speed based on today's NHL. Which is why our prospect pool has turned around.

Plus a large part of that was also player development, which was very bad under Bergevin until he made changes to it last 2 years ago.

The order of excuses goes like this:

    1. Injuries

    2. The players

    3. Winning is "tough"

    4. The media

    5. Fans who think this is easy, like NHL 2020

    6. The Zamboni driver

    7. The guy selling hot dogs in the concourse

    8. The 579 million inhabitants of North America

    ...#567685947. Marc Bergevin

You forgot the it's in between their ears excuse he used.

Kovalchuk wins it and then salutes the booing crowd in Jersey.

Hope we bring him back next year if plan is to make the playoffs.

Would give him a 1 year 4mil deal with 2mil in bonus's in the deal that could make it 6mil If he gets all of them.  I think that would be a fare contract for him.

Fair enough, thats one way to look at it.

Personally, I'd send him down to the AHL once one of Drouin or Byron are back.  To me, he's shown that he isn't ready to produce offence.  I'd leave Cousins there who might finish a pass then trying to force something out of Poehling at this point.

Oh I agree poehling is going to go down to the AHL once Drouin gets

At this point in their careers, Cousins is the better offensive player.

Poehling has 1 goal and 0 assists in 25+ games this season.   Cousins has shown more than that.

That's why I would put him with Domi try and get some offense out of him.

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity

I can't remember who said drafting was good but they must have forgotten about that decade after 2008

look at this mess, that guy got a promotion

    https://www.hockeydb.com/...aft/teams/dr00006929.html

The last 2 years has been good when it comes to drafting , in large part due to 2 things. 1) Bergevin changed from thinking big gritty players with no skill was still successful, too drafting speed and skilled players Ment for today's NHL. 2) they missed the playoffs and finished close to the bottom which Allowed them to draft better players.

The problem is that we have no NHL ready prospects that are top 6 that can fill in for injuries right now because of his old way of thinking, and our development of players the last 7 years has been garbage. That's all on Bergevin.

With the changes last year to our development department and the change in drafting hopefully in 4 years time we will have the talent to call up and fill in when we have injuries and see different results.
