The point still stands... you dont assume every prospect is going to work out so you can trade domi cause you have poehling.

It also is even worse at c, where you can have one at wing and move to c when injuries hit.

Gainey when gm of Dallas traded away a young prospects in the name of jarome iginla for a Proven NHL forward in Joe Nieuwendyk and that helped them win a cup.

As a gm you have to take gambles when it comes to trade.

"We have Justin Pogge and Tuukka Rask, so we can afford to trade one of our goalies" - John Ferguson Jr in 2006.

Poehling has 1 point in 24 games this year.  He's young and might become a nice 3rd line centre... but using him as an excuse to trade Domi seems misguided to me.   Again, I hope he becomes a nice third liner.  He might also become Kyle Chipchura or Nate Thompson, we don't know yet.

Domi is the one centre on the time who has actually put up a 70 point season.  The fact that he is proven is why you keep him, unless that immediate benefit is another young proven player (not a draft pick or prospect).

First off that trade was for Raycroft. Toronto was trying to win now and thought  raycroft who just won rookie of the year was the better goaltender to go forward with.  So its not like he just traded a goaltender because he had two.

Think of that trade like the Subban/Weber trade. We traded the young player for an older player who Bergevin thought could help the team win more.

I don't disagree with your point but Domi's age is a big consideration here. The return would have to really good to trade him, certainly would not trade him for a pick in the last half of the first round. With Domi you have a pretty good idea of what you have, a guy who will play with a lot of passion and likely score 60-70 points consistently. Tatar is also valuable and still relatively young while Petry at 32 has more good years behind him than ahead of him.

    Oh I agree,

I am not looking to trade those guys if I am planning on this team next year to challenge for a playoff spot next year.

With Domi I guess you would have to ask....1) which center's are we going to keep moving forward. 2) which  center is going to give you the highest return in a trade.

    Danault

    Domi

    Kotkaniemi

    Suzuki

    Poehling

Out of those who's the guy you're willing to trade that would give you a great return to fill a need. The need a puck moving defensemen on the left or right side if we trade petry.

    So package a-- Domi+Byron

    Or package b-- poehling +Byron

I don't think the other guys are going anywhere, so I think its going to be between domi and poehling. If domi is going to want too much money he could be the one traded.

  4. If you Are going to trade guys like Domi, Tatar, Petry.... I wouldn't ask for 1st round picks this year , but I would ask for 1st round picks next year. You never know what is going to happen in a season, look at Ottawa for an example. They could get 2 top 10 picks because they got the sharks 1st pick this year. It doesn't always workout that way but you just never know with this game.

Of course,  this trade scenario is happening after the lotery is done.

    1st pick swap  +  2 players among  Fleury - Caufield - Poehling - Primeau.

Is it too much  for a guy like Lafrenière ?   I know he's no Crosby/McDavid,  but the medias will shut the fawk up for a while.

The media won't shut up until there's a wining team on the ice.

One question.  How good is Lafrenière ?

Ok, two questions.  Is he  1st pick swap + Primeau + Poehling/Caufield  good ?

    I think that's over payment.

It looks like Detroit might get the first pick but with the draft lottery you just never know anyone  of the bottom 3 team's  could get it.  With that being said you can't offer a trade unless you know what team it is and if we have what they need.

Did fine at 15 last year.

Yeah why ..... Because teams stayed away from Caufield's  size and he slide out of top 10.

if you actually look at our picks  after 15 from Montreal only 2 have made an impact in the NHL Pacioretty and Mcdonagh. Its still hard to say what Poehling is going to be.

So the CH is dammed if it stays path and dammed if it trades to teams that would be trade partners.

None of the basement dwellers would want to trade their picks for our older trade chips

It sucks to be the « 1990s leafs »

No they're not. We got a good team they just need some key players. What needs to happen is Bergevin needs to determine what we are and what path to continue on.

Path 1) if he thinks this is a playoff team, then the reset should be over, and  he should be adding talent to it to help win now and be a contender.

Path 2) if he still wants to go young and not worried about the playoffs. Then say its a rebuild and trade guys like price, weber, Tatar, petry. Become a lottery pick team and go young.

We can't stay the path of a bubble team.

Trade non-core high valued assets like Tatar (my fall posts), Petry or Domi (my winter posts) would yield extra picks in the top 50 this year.

That should give the CH a bump in high-end talent

No it won't. Type of team's that would want Petry and Tatar would be playoff teams. Which means their 1st round pick would be of lower vaule since you're looking at anywhere from 20-32. You're not going to find much vaule picking in those spot's.

Vaule in picks come from 1-15, depends on how deep draft is, or if a player falls out of top 10.

Need higher talent on this team. Getting additional 1st and 2nd draft picks in 2020 will help

I would move Domi before Petry at this point because of the Habs depth at forward As it was well explained to me

You want higher younger talent.......... Become a lottery pick team for the next 3 years. Picking in the top 10 gets you better players then picking 15 and up, unless its a deep draft or a player falls out of top ten.

  11. It would be interesting to see this team for the first time with 3 good scoring lines once everyone comes back healthy.

    Tatar  / Danault  / Kovalchuck

    Drouin  / Domi  / Gallagher

    Lehkonen  / Kotkaniemi  / Armia

    Also a 4th line of

Cousins /  Suzuki  / Weal or Thompson

    Could be effective also

I would look at trading Byron, and Thompson at the deadline, get draft picks for them.

If you ask me - and no one ever does 😄 - the All Star format should be like this:

    1. Skills competition gets all the big names together so the sponsors can feel important and 10-year-olds can get their jollies watching Weber blast and Barzal race

    2. The game itself is the year's only "Outdoor Classic." It's a regular-season game between two actual teams, with something on the line. The All Stars attend the game, do media hits, etc..

Don't call it the All-Star Game. Call it the NHL All-Star Celebration. This way we get an actual game that people care about out of the event, while also seeing all the league's big names doing stuff.

How fun would it be to have an all star game in LA outdoors and players on Rollerblades.  Or an all star game outdoors in the winter time. You want to sell the game and the top stars in it, that would be a start.

Romanov will be a rookie we will need more depth than that on LD.

We are missing a top LD

Bergevin won't see it that way, just like he didn't see the lack of depth this year especially at D. He puts his eggs all in one basket and then doesn't have a plan b,c or d in case things go wrong. He will put all his eggs in Romanov next year.

    Next year's D will be

    Chiarbot / Weber

    Mete / Petry

    Romanov  / Kulak/fleury

I don't see him making any other upgrades on D.

Switching Petry for TJ Brodie moves the hole to right but gets LD prospects and clears a spot for our current RD prospects

the other moves, bring mostly prospects and no NHLer, you are right. I can find a filler in the trade partners to get back a D contract and patch until the prospects are ready

I would still do the trades

    LD next year will be

    Chiarot

    Mete

    Romanov

Don't see him looking for a LD unless Romanov doesn't come over from Russia

Not disputing the Subban one:for:one trade, but unless you are privy to MB not wanting Tatar and being forced to take him: I will disagree on that.

Petry will get moved. It does not make sense to keep him after the 2020-2021 season and there is a risk that his value falls off next season. Got to sell high!

I am just saying he hasn't traded his star players for the sake of getting younger. He has traded his star players to full other hole's on the team. So if he does trade a guy like Petry it will probably be to get back a player he feels can fill a hole on the team, not for draft picks.

  16. 39 minutes ago, alfredoh2009 said:

Same as trading Pacioretty or Subban didn't "blow up the team", trading Petry wouldn't. It is smart asset management to trade an ageing veteran at his highest value for draft picks and prospects.

If we got Tatar and Suzuki for #67, We can get a great return for 32 year old Petry without "blowing up the team"

    273eto.jpg

It was just Suzuki for Pacioretty, Bergevin didn't want Tatar. VGK put him in the deal so they could Get rid of Tatars contract so they could sign Pacioretty long term.

Subban we got back Weber, their was no draft picks involved.

Petry is still under contract and won't be moved.

He's going to try and make the playoffs (which we won't) so he isn't going to trade anyone. Maybe Byron if he comes back before the trade deadline and plays good.

  17. 3 hours ago, alfredoh2009 said:

of the trade assets the CH has, I believe (IMHO) that Petry should be moved. Here are a few ideas:

    Petry for 1st & 2nd plus a prospect:

    a) Nashville's 1st & 2nd 2020 picks plus Eeli Tolvanen

    b) Winnipeg's 1st & 2nd 2020 picks plus Ville Heinola

    c) Vegas's 1st & Holden(Contract)  picks plus Nicolas Hague

Petry for 1st plus a younger upgrade on LD:

    d) Calgary's 1st (no 2nd) 2020 plus TJ Brodie and maybe even a goalie throw-in like Artyom Zagidulin

Either of these would make me happy. The Habs D would take a hit in the short term, but we would build a solid core for years to come.

Bergevin isn't blowing up the team, so Petry isn't going anywhere.  Injuries will be the same excuse at the end of the year press conference. Don't expect Bergevin to do much at the deadline.
