35, actually.  But yes, he's basically a career minor leaguer at this point which is basically the same as McCarron.  I'd say Dauphin has a little more offensive upside but not to the point of it making much of a difference.

These are the type of trades I argue shouldn't give Bergevin the label of busiest gm.

Yeah.  that's probably the main reason of why we're loaded with grinders.

And of course, we had Galchenyuk but he failed to adapt his skilled game to the NHL (so far)  and we traded him for more of a grinder player in a lateral move instead of paying extra picks and prospects to really improve him and get skills in return.

No we have more grinders because that's what Bergevin believed  still won playoff games. But in today's NHL its not. With this reset or what ever you want to call it he is building a team more for today's NHL. Domi, Drouin, Suzuki, Caufield are meant  for today's NHL.  problem is our NHL ready prospects are all grinders from the last 4 years they're not meant for today's NHL.

It's because our team is 90% built with hard workers and 10% skills.

Let's be honest, the only above average players  in terms of skills with the puck / beautiful and creative plays / serious treats with the puck  are  Drouin and Suzuki.
Then you have your Tatar and Domi (and a bit of Kovalchuk yeah) and Kotkaniemi who's not top 6 ready.

    But that's it.

Danault, Gallagher, Armia, etc   are more grinders with some skills.  Weber, Petry, Mete  have one power skill (Shot or skating)  but are not all around skilled players.

So when  Drouin falls down,  that's pretty much our only  real NHL established skilled player here.

Problem is :  other teams generally have more skilled players while they are also hard workers.

On most nights, hard work WITH talent  will beat hard work alone.

To be honest I believe we are seeing the effect of our weak drafting over the years after our current core made the jump to the NHL. Price, Subban, Gallagher, Pacioretty became our core group and we became contenders. We then stopped drafting talent and we weakened ourselves.

  4. So since Drouin went down with injury we're 7-24. I said that if we didn't make a trade to upgrade his lose we would tail spin. That's exactly what has happened.

It happens every single time with this team.  It goes back to the fact that we're just not a deep team. Prospects wise yes  we have become deeper in talent over the last two years. Bergevin has done a great job drafting players for today's NHL.  But those prospects aren't NHL ready to fill in holes now.  theirs just way to many holes on the NHL team.

I know it's just not Drouin, but Armia, Gallagher, mete and company over The last 2 months. But it's more the fact that their is such a big drop off if we lose top talent.

    And tatar.

Hf89 tries to say hes unbiased will give bergevin credit... but he doesnt.  Everything bad is his fault and everything good was luck.  Its bs

No I said they were good trades and good returns. But the reason behind those trades were because of mistakes made by Bergevin.

You don't think they were competitive last year?  They were very competitive this year (except for the last 10 days).  I could care less whether he calls it a reset, rebuild or retool. I just want MB to make good decisions going forward so they can compete for the cup again.

He didn't do anything to improve them last year when other teams in our division did. Which is why we ended up missing the playoffs. Then in the off season Did nothing to address hole's. So no to me he didn't do a good job with the on ice product.

No he should have said “Molson fire me and keep paying me for the good of the team - because it’s all about team and I’m a team first guy”

No he should of said this is a full rebuild. Which means Price, Weber and Petry are all available for trade and we will be a lottery pick team for the next 3 years. I would  of been totally on board and not care about the on ice product.

But he said this is a reset. Which means The on ice product should still be competitive. Which it isn't and that's why he doesn't get a pass from me on the on ice product. He does get a pass on the drafting and prospect reset, but not the on ice reset.

Yes, I suppose in October Bergy should of stepped up to mic, "We are hopeless this year, for how long who knows; but, please keep buying tickets and support the team.":wall:

Wow learn to read...... If it's a rebuild and your going with youth say it's a rebuild end of story.

Don't say it a reset but then don't improve the on ice product.

Fans can jump on and off the bandwagon pretty quickly.  I think most on this board were pretty optimistic after winning 3 of 4 on their western road trip.  They looked to be in pretty good shape. Then a bad 10 day stretch completed changed the narrative. Last year they had 96 points!!  Most years that would get you in the playoffs. I thought they were a pretty exciting team last year but some here make it sound like they were awful. Much work to do but I honestly believe they are headed in the right direction.

Yeah why did we miss the playoffs last year? Because he didn't add to the team. It gets frustrating when you see other teams improve but yours.

Like I have been saying if you want to go with the young guys call it a full rebuild and be a lottery pick team.

Don't string the fans along and give them false hope.

For me I try and focus on what he should be doing now. We can't change what he did 3 or 4 or 5 years ago so I am not going to dwell too much on it. I like what he has done the last couple years (except for the Sergachev trade, maybe that will turn out but I am doubtful, Alzner signing was a bust). The reality is that MB is the GM, he seems to have support from Molson to take a long term approach and I hope he makes the right moves to build something sustainable.  We can complain about the past but we can't change it.

Yeah but when the past keeps repeatting itself you can. That's part of the problem.  Nothing has changed with the on ice product in 7 years. That's why people bash him. He doesn't just run the farm system he runs the NHL team as well. Has he improved the future of this team i think he has. We're now top what 5 in the league for prospects.  Since he bought into the new NHL he's made better picks. But over that time has he improved the on ice product of the team? No he hasn't we continue to miss the playoffs and be a none factor. That's where all frustration of the fans come from.

I don't think anyone on the board is acting like MB is the best GM in the world, based on the success of the team he is not.  I just get tired of the continual bashing where some posters constantly  berate him for every failure without giving him credit for the good things he has done.  I personally think that he has smartened up the last couple years and now we have a good prospect pool and good young players coming up, we didn't have that before.   There is hope now, I don't think there was much hope a couple years ago,

or at least I am much more hopeful about their future,  can't speak for everyone else.

There's the flip side too to this which gets me mad and I understand where you coming because there's poster on here that won't admit to the bad things Bergevin does and thinks everything he does turns too gold.

I try to see both the good and bad and will point them both out.

Theres some that just want to bash him and there's some who want to make him a saint.

Yes he has done good over the last 2 years with the future of this team. But does that erase everything bad he has done?  no it doesn't. Bottom line ....it will always be the on ice product of the NHL team and it isn't very good and that's why people will Continue to bash him.

Ok. Here is a cup of chill for you all. Did anyone on this board look at the lineup we were icing in September and think playoffs were a given?

We are probably 2 years away from our bluechips giving us a solid shot at contention. Any move that jeopardises that should be the only thing to get the GM fired. We have managed to compete last season and so far this season in spite of our lineup being patchy. That is promising and we have secured some vets that will be key with our youth going forward.

The idea of moving Armia, Tatar and the likes at deadline is asinine to say the least. These vets will be needing a needed going forward if we are to compete in the next 2 years.

The future may not be now but  I feel better about it now than I have in years.

    Go Habs Go

This is the point we're not retooling we're rebuilding. If we're not going to be playoff contending for another 3 years do we need Price and Weber on this team?

  13. Well we should have something on the line?

    How about we do this

if he does good for the habs and the habs make the playoffs Because of it then those who don't like the addition can't say anything bad about Bergevin till the All Star Game Next year.

    And

If he does bad and we miss the playoffs then everyone who liked the signing has to give a like to everyone who didn't  on every post till the all star game next year.

So who's in or has a better bet ??

so now that everyones done there crying or celebrating...

This zero risk move is a no brainer! Its basically an olive branch to an old star player who is playing for pride and love of hockey. It could be genius if it works. Now less we forget that it failed with Semin and again with Briere and again with Streit etc etc. Sooner or later the odds say he's gonna catch lightning in a bottle with one of these swing for the fences signings. I think this is the one 🥴 and it just might work short term! 🥴🥴 Kovalchuk is no doubt a very proud hockey player. He knows his prospects for next year are essentially over if he shits the bed with Montreal right now. And we can all agree that he's not doing it for the money as he left a kings fortune with NJ to go home to play as an example. Then he leaves a team again he captained to multiple KHL championships to try his luck in Hollywood. Like most films these days, it failed over there! maybe he belonged in Mtl all along! 🧐

Did I mention he has been a juggernaut for any and every team he wore red  white and blue for! Haha 🙃

In all seriousness Id like to see him play with Tatar and Danault. He has a couple weeks maximum before Gallagher is back to prove his worth. Let's see what he's got in him?

MB has called him out as well so let's buckle up. This is a brilliant desperation move. There is literally NO RISK to try and strike gold with a proven champion!

I bet he comes out a blaze!! 🤒

Anyone arguing this is crazy. We are 6 players deep into depth with minor leaguers scratched and injured as well! We followed up an 0-8 run were we blew 4x 3rd period leads with a 7-3 run.

Now we are back to 4 straight losses and more injuries. The Montreal Canadiens need a fair amount of luck right now.

    what's the bet🤔

I don't believe in tanking. Never did. I like the fact that MB has offered the club at least SOME sort of help and isn't totally throwing in the towel on 2019-20 - not that I think Kovalchuk will do much. Scandella seems to me to be a more valuable acquisition (although still of somewhat modest value, in all probability).

So you don't like the idea of getting an elite player? Why?

You can’t have it both ways. In one thread people talk about rushing kids rather than letting them develop in the AHL. In the next, people want to call them up and play them on this dumpster fire of a team to get “NHL minutes”. You’re rather optimistic (ha) if the addition of Kovalchuk vaults that Habs 5-10 spots in the standings. Who would you call up? Evans? That’s about it that I can think of from a  “kid” standpoint, There are already 5 Rocket players with Montreal (Vejdemo, Weise, Peca, Barber, Poehling)...you want more of Hudon?

I don't want it both ways. The reason why we're nothing but a bubble team every year is because Montreal wants it both ways.

I for one am in favor of a full rebuild and core change here. Yes that means trading guys like Price Weber and Petry. This way we become a lottery team for the next 3 years and actually be able to have some skill on this team.

I am more than happy to wait a few years knowing that we will be a cup contender for a long time.

  17. 12 minutes ago, Prime Minister Koivu said:

He may not make it here either but it is a small price to pay to find out.

What happens if he finds his game?

This costs us nothing and if he can't make it then he gets put on waivers.

So you wouldn't rather call up a kid that's been playing good in the AHL. Give him some playing time in the NHL rather than give it to guys like kovalchuk and weise

I am tired of these washed up player type of moves. At this point in the season just become a lottery pick team. At least we will get a skilled player out of it.  What this does is takes a top 10 pick out of our hands and makes it a 15-20 pick.

  18. 14 minutes ago, Chris said:

    Thats what i mean,

They are in a rebuild i keep hearing but the keep making moves like this makes you wonder

MB likes to have things both ways

Trading tatar, petry or whoever isn't seperation, that would be following the plan to get picks and youth and skill

Thank you finally someone sees what I have been trying to say.

  19. 11 minutes ago, nhfarber said:

but we're not talking about playing kids.  We're talking about Dale freaking Wiese.  Sign me up for Kovalchuk over him.

That's my thing I wouldn't even be playing him. Just keep playing the kids. This sounds like a pressure move to try and make the playoffs. This team isn't good enough to make the playoffs. Play the kids get a lottery pick.
