  1. I get the feeling we won't see Galchenyuk at centre for a while. Let him master the wing, then you give him looks at centre. He is literally on the doorstep of a break out.

I would really like to see Beaulieu secure a spot. His game is all about speed and he needs to play at the next level to move his game to the next level. At some point you have to let the kids make mistakes with the big club or your going to get the same mistakes next year. I agree his defensive game needs work, but what better way to work on it than hearing where to be on the ice and how get out of sticky situation than from some of the top veteran defensmen in the league on your team. Beaulieu's time in Hamilton has expired. The next level is where he'll learn his game, but it won't be without mistakes.

i disagree with this.... nathan beaulieau has failed to even be hamilton's best defensmen in all his games played there... anyone who watches the dogs can vouch for this.... if he can't even be our best d-man in the A how in the world can you expect him to crack the line up on arguably one of the top teams in hockey right now... he needs to slot in the top 4 and is nooooooo where near that!!

  2. I can't believe

    a. Gallagher let his emotions get the better of him and actually said that

    b. that he hasn't been fined by the NHL yet

why would he be fined??.... all though i can see major backlash albeit subtle by the refs for gallagher not leaving the ice talk exactly there... on the ice

  3. MB has a plan. Just wait and see.

your right MB does have a plan and I'm starting to wonder how much of it actually has to do with leverage in contract talks with tinordi and nathan as well...

you have to wonder with their entry level deals expiring, tucking them back into the A for the rest of the season will kill there chance at significant raises through strong play throughout this season. instead, with few games played their leverage has been negated .... he trades for these expiring contracts, tucks the kids back in the AHL... then post season resigns the 2 kids for 2 years each at a slight raise and then starts to ride them next season.... he is a cap guru no doubt!

  4. if his PP time has been cut into somewhat by running these 2 x 5 man units why not give him more time on the PK, it will only help round out his game and help cut down markovs TOI ..... worked wonders i think for patches game!!

  5. i hear what your saying which is why i wouldn't mind his one timer on the left half boards... but running to 5 man units like they have for the last 3 games isn't such a bad idea...

he has been getting PK minutes lately i thought

  6. i loved that 89 team and arguably 1986 to 1995 the habs were consistently contending....

its much to early to compare this team to them but maybe just maybe in the future we can look back at this young team as start of something special... the return of les glourieux after a decade of heartache!!!

  7. I don't know, it just seems that our power play has never looked to good ever since PK and markov play the points together. it seems to always be a mess cause PK constantly is pushing his slapper and wants to flip flop with marky all the time disrupting the points and flow of possession.

i am a FIRM believer that if therrien simply flips gilbert and markov in pairings you will see instant dividends.

    1st unit

    patch DD gallagher

    PK gilbert

    2nd unit

    paranteau plex galchenyuk

    markov beaulieau

-a lefty feeding a lefty on the right point creates the perfect one timer and markov seems to be able to make any lefty an offensive juggernaut on the PP why not beaulieau... On the flip side, PK needs a right handed defender to feed his shot on the PP to really maximize this weapon and take it to the next level in scoring.

the simple secret to our power play.. a little blast from the past (success)

    i see.....

i once again must stress that you need stability on the point for the PP regardless of net presence or lack of. our points on the PP are always playing erratic and we need stability and to get that markov needs to stick to left side and find the open shooter....

    really....

even if we have that net presence.... if the entire 2 minutes is spent trying to enter the zone and we have markov and subban flip flopping constantly and PK is skating all over the place.... where is the shots, imagination? we can't even gain the zone and when we do and subban is on the left point waiting to unleash a bomb you have markov so far away from him in order to square up to give him that shot ( unless he is feeding him off his backhand it will never work on a consistent basis unless the shot is perfectly placed)

earlier it was stated how unstoppable the PP of years past was... why?? because

if you look at a stable point on the power play like I've been preaching for like forever on the PP for example (stability meaning the defenders stay on each of there points and refrain from erratic play on the blue line lefty feeding lefty or righty feeding righty).....

-markov on left feeding the one timer on the right point w/ left shot (play 1) this is a quick cross ice one timer not a stop caulk and shoot that were seeing from PK because its just not working

-defender takes away that point shot leaving space for the cross ice pass to patch for one timer from marky (option 2)

-markov can also go down low with a pass to gallagher who can jam the post or go cross crease to patch(option3)

-DD behind net can go to the boards back to patch for shot from the hash (option 5) or give and go down low (option6))

-dd up high to subban or find marky creeping up on the back door play. (options 7 and 8).

    - cycling the puck on the PP is for chumps... we have an extra man on the ice and should gain zone and keep possession. find open players for ideal shots while having the goalie moving lateral so to open gaps in the net. this only works when you have your forwards skating through or standing in front of goal. but if the shots from the point are coming after per say PK stops the puck squares up and shoots its giving the PK'ers to much time to box out, block shots and the goalie to get into position. there is no problem with movement on the PP from the forwards. or the defenders sneaking up for the back door. but the players need to know that marky is the outlet on the point. the safety net that if the cycle starts you can swing the puck around the boards and his left stick is there on the boards to regroup and start over...

stability, structure and presence on the PP starts with the defenders on the point and its just not working long term over the last 2 seasons with PK and marky.... i believe the staff knows this but aren't willing to demote either quite yet from the 1st unit....

    you don't say...

now remove all players names and insert markov, souray, schneider, streit, bergeron kovy, koivu, ryder plex etc... etc.. what is the common denominator here... thats right a stable presence on the points

    interesting...

i don't know..... I've been asking for a lefty to play the point with markov for over a year.... has MB finally listened? he heard my pleas to move gorges and bring in a righty (weaver) last year.... i think he might be following me on twitter...lol

    no way.....

with that said, will MT have the guts to be as bold as MB is in the office, and move subban on the first unit and put gonchar on the right?

maybe try subban on the left half boards??

I'm just salivating a bit at the prospect of these 2 russians running our power play, it could be a match made in heaven!

    again... no way...

    markov gonchar

    PK gilbert

or you can use PK on the left half boards in place of paranteau with DD and patch in order to stay on the 1st unit?

    sounds good on paper...

I'm telling you all.... instant dividends... is there a better right point man in the NHL over the last 20 years then gonchar?? nope

    the General and his comrade.....

im loving it... id still keep subban on the half boards with the 1st wave with all his skill.........

    really... instant dividends??

    bold prediction

    PP goal 1

markov to insert gonchar or beaulieau for the clean one timer.... and paranteau taps in the rebound...

    PP goal 2

markov goes cross ice to plex for the one timer he misses the net puck comes back around and markov to insert gonchar or beaulieau for a clean one timer...

im envisioning the instant proficiency as we speak

    ok so

game 1 was a good show on each and every opportunity plus one goal on the rush

game 2 we saw paranteau's rebound goal we saw markov to insert name for the one timer and we saw the back door play from the point not to shabby

game 3 the goose egg again but its clear the power play is working again if not with goals at least momentum...

instant dividends with this point finally being addressed properly...

  8. and dallas could not wait to get rid of him, he was traded for travis moen who was on the fifth line in montreal, providing dallas pay some of his salary. hmm sounds like i am not the only one who thinks he is worth just more than a bag of pucks.

Did i see him play, do remember him stinking the joint out against the habs in 7 game series in 2010. actually was the goat on two goals in game 7. one ironically scored by travis moen. Pens dumped him right after that series. Also watched him live against the Leafs when he played for Ottawa, thought he had one skate in retirement then. Did he get better since turning forty.....i doubt it.

and like yourself i pushed a few buttons and looked up his stats.

    does that answer your question.

since your asking me can you tell me of the time you saw him play..............or are you are lap top stats fan only?

i don't normally fuel these types of fires but what the hey its been a while....

    * with dallas sitting last in the west and an abysmal PK to boot, did you ever wonder that maybe moving forward they looked to shed salary this season while addressing the PK for next season as well.. gonchar has a hefty salary that most teams could not absorb.

** i asked if you had seen him play in the 3 only games he played this season for Dallas because i didn't (not 4 seasons ago) but...

***good defensmen make mistakes and sometimes break down, usually mistakes by defenders result in goals. i do recall him flat footed on the blue line while moen skated by and beat fleury with a routine wrister from the dot.. who could forget that master card commercial.... but

**if you break that play down just a little more you'll see that with the score 3-0 already for montreal, kunitz had a horrible giveaway handing the puck directly to moen already skating hard and catching gonchar flat footed at his blue line... with gonchar retreating backwards the speed of moen was to much for gonchar. with a full 1 on 3 and no trailing forwards as separation between moen and his teammates was substantial, letang started to double up on moen, and with kunitz back checking heavy after the horrible give away you can see why gonchar passed him zonely considering the help he had from 2 teammates... fortunately for us gonchar didn't even get a hand on moen to slow him down and he was able to essentially put the game away. gonchar's fault?? of course he should of tried to interfere but while on the PP and down 3-0. he probably didn't want to risk a even up call and cancel out a chance to re -open the game on the PP.... soft play for sure. but for every soft play from gonchar you also get this...

    or this

    http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=536179

    and most recently this.....

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=151O4bIRMGE

****if stinking in a 7 game series means scoring 2 goals adding 4 assists for 6 points in 7 games then man i wished subban had that kind of bad series against the rangers last year.

12 pts in 13 playoff games +4 to go with his 50pts in 62 games in 2010!!! you really think pitts wanted to dump him following a season like that??

**** he signed a mammoth 3 year contract as a UFA with OTT earning every penny at such an advanced age due to his huge contribution with the pens over all seasons. the pens actually wanted to resign him but they couldn't fit his salary......

*****must of been an interesting game that LEAFS/ OTT game live, wondering if you were there to watch your favourite team that can do no wrong un like are constantly stumbling habs??

with that said, i don't own a lap top, however, i consistently use sound facts and stats to back up my analyzation and opinions as to not look foolish when voicing my opinion to others.. there is a reason i rarely post but enjoy reading these threads in its entirety for good commentary and others insight to further my knowledge on the habs...

as a heart and soul hockey guy... i seem to watch to much hockey, my wife is constantly busting them.. i also have actually watched a bunch of ott games with gonchar in the line up... maybe thats why i knew this acquisition was gonna help instantly!

seems my pre-assessment is a little more bang on with gonchar then yours even if its only over his first 3 games!!

its why i wanted jagr over the last like 4 seasons... these kind of guys are exceptions to there age... all-time greats at what they do... they can only help!

  9. i think MB NEEDS to have a package deal in place for someone substantial. if we go back to Winnipeg for example

kane for eller bourque collberg ellis and 2nd rd pick or something of that nature.

    habs look

patch DD kane (this line looks very dangerous)

galchenyuk briere gallagher (briere centering these 2 for the next 2 seasons??)

bournival plex gionta (a 3rd line that already goes against the opposition and brings tonnes of secondary scoring)

prust white weise/ moen (a real 4th line that can play 10/11 minutes a night)

a balanced lineup with room to grow..... patch entering his prime with DD as his robin! galchenyuk, kane, gallagher, bournival still scratching the surface of there careers while insulated with vets.

These are the types of deals that are going to make us better. trading eller isn't the question. who is coming back in return is! if your getting a kane back who is younger bigger faster stronger and has more offence...... of course you do it. but we will have to give up something to get a coveted player of this nature and at this point eller is the youth we should be cutting ties with not patches or the galleys or the D.

next would be sending gorges on his way for a right handed defender

    subban R

    markov

    emelin

    tinordi

    beaulieau

    pateryn R

    murray
    gorges
    boullion
    Drewiske
as it stands we have only subban as a right handed shot on def. this is a serious issue on the back end and is not good for team balance.
for example emelin 1 year post op with a right knee reconstruct playing on the right side means he has to force guys to the outside opening up to his right knee.
    we need a righty ASAP

given a negative reputation for this comment meanwhile..... fast forward less then 2 months later

we traded for weaver before the deadline a right handed shot

as well as tomas vanek ok so vanek wasn't kane but he still was substantial and winnipeg was to be used only as an example (plus i got collberg right)

then in the offseason we actually send gorges on his way and pick up gilbert!!!!!!!!!

i think this negative needs to go positive!!! ;)

interesting take on gonchar from the players themselves.... looks like a real gamer is about to join them not no kaberle that people are comparing him to......

here's a little sneak peak into what this move can do for a guy like beaulieau.....

One player who also plans on absorbing as much knowledge from Gonchar as possible is Nathan Beaulieu, who, at 21 years of age, is still in the veritable infancy of his NHL career.

I think a guy like Gonchar is never going to hurt your club. I’m excited to see what he can bring, and he’s definitely a guy that I can learn from. He’s a great addition and everybody in the room is happy to have him here,” offered Beaulieu, who has been held off the scoresheet through 10 games in 2014-15, registering a minus-2 differential during that span. “I have the opportunity to be on the ice every day with elite guys. Players like Markov and Gonchar have been in the league for a long time. I can grab whatever I can from them, learn and try to get better. If I’m not in the lineup, I can use it as a development tool to get better for when I get back in there.”

And, while Beaulieu might take a back seat to Gonchar when the four-time Olympian dons the CH for the first time, Pacioretty insists the young rearguard will undoubtedly benefit from the vast experience the newest Habs defenseman brings along with him north of the border.

“You’ve always heard stories about how he took guys like Evgeni Malkin and Valeri Nichushkin under his wing. Coach told me that he’s such a great guy and he’s so good with his teammates. I think a guy like Beaulieu can learn a lot from him because he definitely wants to eventually play the game that Gonchar plays, and everybody wants to have that type of career,” concluded Pacioretty. “Not to get too far ahead of myself, but seeing the way Beau wants to play, and the way management wants him to play, I think he could be a good mentor for him. We’re excited to see what happens.”

"we're excited to see what happens...." says pacioretty, and so am i

  11. got that right. if gonchar plays ahead of the kids for even one shift it is moronic! he was washed up when pittsburhg kicked him to the curb nearly 5 years ago. if he was a top six dman yopu would not get him for a washed up healthy scratch fourth liner.

like radio caller said earlier........if gonchar plays its a old leaf like trade. anything not to develope your own dmen.

i am seriously hoping this is a purely garbage for garbage depth move. with what the habs have now on d gonchar would be the no 8 man. if he becomes the no 6 man .....

did they learn nothing from kabby?

if he plays ahead of the kids shame on MB

have you watched gonchar play in dallas all of the last 3 games he has played this season? or any games in pitts or ottawa cause i know you didn't watch him last season in Dallas? your comments are that of a child who is not yet allowed to stay up and watch hockey games so therefore isn't aware of facts

gonchar amassed 91 poiints in 186 games in OTT at age 36-38 and 259 in 322 games in pitts from age 31-35yrs.. if only....

  12. JGC21, I hear that move Emelin thing a lot on the street. Yes he probably is going to be slipping down our depth chart very quickly, but what if we let him fall to third pairing and move Gonchar to a bubble team for more than the bag of pucks we could get for Moen? Gonchar to me also holds that UFA trade bait chip. Help get our PP firing and become a late 2nd or a prospect? Ok.

Of course that means finding a playoff bubble team with a depleted defence come deadline.

gonchar has a full no movement clause which he waived to come to our team!!

A tad harsh on Moen( maybe) but I like White too. Much faster and unconcussed. However while you are high on Gonchar and down on Moen remember this. MB did not steal him from Dallas. Teams in the nhl would pay diddly squat for moen.......and thats what dallas paid montreal...SQUAT . Matter of fact the deal would not go down straight up....Dallas had to give throw in cash to take Gonchar (part of salary) lol

its a sad state of affairs when a habs fan thinks that a 40 year old Gonchar will help the team be better................fortunately thats not the case........thank god

-MB also got colorado to throw in a pick w/ paranteau

-scored vanek for catso and etc....

turns out MB is a savvy GM so far and is actually able to come out on top of trades which is a pleasant surprise considering our recent history spanning as far back as say 1995...

can you honestly say or anyone for that matter that the habs defensive depth is not better today then it was yesterday making the team better overall? i though so.....

i for one think making a play for gonchar who is essentially a rental and paying nothing for him is genius... even if it is a failed experiment on the ice in the end is it really? we have moen off the books next season which is perfect as moen is obsolete on this version of the habs.

now gonchar is after all 40.... but once you get past his age he is still one of the all time greats on the back end and a top 10 all time in virtually every offensive category in less games then most i might add... a left handed right defence men... the exact player we need for the PP ( sorry i want)... the fact that he is a fellow comrade of markov is just icing on the cake.. he is exactly the kind of player to play with markov. in fact, i think markov's motivation has just increased ten fold with this signing

you said he sucked in pitts meanwhile he put up hall of fame numbers in his tenor there... you said he sucked in OTT but he was good there too playing a top 4 role i might add.

i think this is his last hoorah no doubt.... but some legends do go out with a bang.... i can only dream

  13. It is irritating, because from what I've seen Tinordi has played decently. Presumably the logic is less that he sucks and more that he will do better by getting massive ice-time rather than the sheltered minutes he'll get here. I'll console myself that he's bound to be back in tolerably short order.

i think he'll have to clear waivers to be sent down as soon as next year?? so if he's not gonna play might as well at this point.... either play him or send him down... leave him there and give him his minutes so he can be the player we expect of him... i just think were more balanced with him up instead of beaulieau... especially with gonchar now in the mix

  14. bold prediction

    PP goal 1

markov to insert gonchar or beaulieau for the clean one timer.... and paranteau taps in the rebound...

    PP goal 2

markov goes cross ice to plex for the one timer he misses the net puck comes back around and markov to insert gonchar or beaulieau for a clean one timer...

im envisioning the instant proficiency as we speak

  15. I'm telling you all.... instant dividends... is there a better right point man in the NHL over the last 20 years then gonchar?? nope

    the General and his comrade.....

im loving it... id still keep subban on the half boards with the 1st wave with all his skill.........
