  1. I'm not sure we have many budding wingers that would potentially hit 50+ points like this future first ballot HHOFer.

Jagr would create SO much room for Pleky and Gionta...it would be unreal. I could see Plek getting 70pts again with someone like him. Given what's on the UFA list and what term they're all looking for, what other options do we have for the short term solution as our youth grows into their future roles? There's always room for a spoiler, but i don't think Leblanc or anyone else would fill the spot. OK maybe Gallager, but that 2nd line averages less than 5"10 at that point.

  2. When Pacioretty was first recalled, he wasn't getting anywhere near top time (ATOI of 12:37 in 2008-09, 12:42 in 2009-10). It was only after that whole 'If I'm not playing top-6 I'd rather be in Hamilton playing top-6' statement that really precipitated things. That came in the final year of his ELC, we're a couple years away from that with Leblanc still.

I was afraid you would mention that!! LOL i was referring to his last call-up :P

  3. As much as i want Gally, i have a feeling that will be Columbus' pick. The Russian factor will not deter them away from him and i believe their D is in better shape then their top 6. Plus if they are banking on giving away Nash at the draft, and unless they get some nice hardware in return, i don't think they have a blue chip prospect in forwards. Jenner and a few dozen NCAA players? Hockey's Future has them mostly rated as C or D level success chances.

My money is that they are passing on Murray and going for C instead of a winger, given Commodant's logic above. Who knows, maybe they are going for Grigs.

Do you think Timmins will pass on Murray/

  4. Oh god, please at least let it be Gallant over Audette. Seriously, what the heck has that old whiner done in the last 10 years? I can't find any trace of it. No professional management positions, or coaching. He's running a triple A midget team? For ######'s sake.

Is he a motivator? Would he play good cop? Is he a strategist? Why hasn't he been employed by NHL teams, or any other professional franchise? I just don't see any use to this guy. He was spoon-fed pucks his entire career. He didn't grind, or play defense, didn't compete at practice. What great virtue is he expected to pass along to this team? Will he be able to see above the players heads? LOL well, i guess Torts can, so he should be ok.

  5. Everyone on 4th line play limited minutes.

And at $250,000 you dont much better value than Staubitz, even Knopka is 700 or so, for a couple minutes/game.

Goons are a dying breed, but almost every team has an idiot or 2 running around out there and a goon on the bench.

Shultz is like White and not a big time fighter (or so i am told), but he did show improvment last year and a 4th line of White-Staubitz and Shultz might rattle the boards pretty good?

And they are only likely to see 7-10 minutes /game at most (with White playing some on PK also), so how much harm could they cause.

He did have 15 fights last year, good for 9th in the league. His record is 9-4-2, with 2 being the draws. I think that's a fairly good winning percentage.

  6. I'd truly like to see the guy back next year as well. I don't think White alone changed that feeling on the team where they felt they could do their own thing without being muscled around. I'm more inclined to think Staubitz was responsible for that. He is clearly one of the better middleweights in the league and it's refreshing to see that after so many years of seeing our grinders get pummelled (with exception, to a degree, to Moen).

But alas, Prust still has, for now, some decent hands. I mean he almost had a 30pt season last year. He's still popping 13 mins a game in the playoffs. Staubitz wouldn't be getting more than 4-5, at best.

Prust will also come with a price tag which is fair, but Staubitz can be had for the league minimum.

Regarding Gaustad, he IS a center, and is he really an enforcer? 4-5 fights per year on average. I mean he's great at face-offs and has lots of other intangibles including size, but i guess my point is we who know the top 3 centers on this team are, and i don't see him as #4. Was that his role in Nashville was? Sorry wasn't paying attention to that.

I see Moen coming back. It was PG saying he was "part of the plans", so that's out the window, but we have a Chicago connection here too. Maybe MB has a like on him already.

  7. One of them will end up director of player personnel or pro scouting or player development. Habs have been understaffed lately.

So then Timmins goes back to single-duty on amateur scounting and 'procurement'? I think he is also amateur player development director right now with running the rookie and prospect training camps, per the Habs website.

Of course there's probably a few things that'll get shaken up while Bergevin puts his structure in place...

  8. I think Dudley's just a recent acqusition of the leafs. Wasn't he part of the Thrashers' organization before they moved to the Peg? At the very least, he's only been part of that losing culture for a single year

Does that beg the question - what role will Carriere have now? Or is there enough work to justify two assistant GMs?

  9. I agree with CC (LOL who doesn't?!?!). If Quenneville is being pushed out, which surprises the heck outta me, then he goes to the top of my list as well. I wasn't terribly familiar with his record until i took a gander at Wikipedia. Of his 14 years as HC, he's popped 40+ wins a season in 11 of the 12 seasons where he coached the team for the entire year (i.e. not taking over or getting fired during the year).

I don't know if stacked teams played a role in that, though. He had Gretzky on the Blues for a bit, a Sakic-led Colorado team, and the ridiculous Blackhawks who incidientally (and most importantly) couldn't win anything with Denis Savard despite being almost the same team. I'm thinking he's the guy that will bring out the most of players, much like we're seeing with Hitchcock in St. Louis right now. You look at the Blues and kind of scratch your head thinking, were they really this good?? Think about pairing the Habs, lethargic underachievers this year, with a catalytic coach like that. The turn-around next year would be HUGE.

  10. If anything, he could fill a great leadership role with the :Bulldogs: given the amount of fresh blood coming in this upcoming season. I still think there's more to him and that he would dominate the sheeit out of the AHL. Probably wouldn't be a call up given the monster cap hit, but i could see him providing some good experience to those kids - given he reports and plays good sport like Wade Redden.

Odds are against him that he's back next year. The gym comment sounded kinda desperate.

  11. I wonder about the 8 teams still left in the play-offs and what other assets the Habs will enquire about. I mean, LA isn't done yet but we're on the verge of announcing stuff? All the insiders are saying a decision is close, but i figured there's still a lot of talented organizations still in the big race...are we discounting them completely at this point? Granted there's not a lot of token French names out there, but we've still got Hextall on the list.

Do we figure the 'full list' is completely leaked or public? I'm almost positive there's got to be some others still left there that we're not aware of.

  12. I wouldn't say it's a regular occurrence but not unusual either. Some legitimately want to finish their degrees, others just enjoy the college atmosphere. As for agents, they're not allowed but family consultants (who may very well be an agent) can advise players. If Kristo wanted, he could have got a bidding war going this offseason as it has been 4 years since he was drafted. The belief is the Habs are okay with this which is interesting as I figured they'd for sure want him signed.

I'd bet he didn't want to drop out in order to become a UFA and start the bidding war. Would he not be susceptible to a standard entry-level deal like Blake Wheeler? Can't remember if Brunnstrom had to go through that (he got 2 mil, right?) but might be different circumstances not being drafted or coming through the NCAA. Meh, maybe he gets 1st rounder-like monies and bonuses..

  13. Roy is saying right now he hasn't received a phone call.

I really don't think he's on their GM list. That being said, I doubt they have a 'coach list' either - so why the need to get in touch with him? The list of candidates with much more experience in pro hockey management would probably need to get whittled down to a few lackluster bodies before Savard would consider Roy. Besides, the GM has to hired is own coach, right?

On another note...please f___ing tell me McGuire isn't in the final 4.

  14. Man, this is the best Habsworld thread in a long time. Some great analysis going on here (along with some great laughs at the expense of Pierre McGuire).

How do you guys have the insight that you do on what the candidates have been doing for their existing organizations? There's some serious fly on the wall stuff that's being mentioned here. Whatever i can digest from out there is mostly 3rd or 4th hand information at best - but some folks seem to know what these potential GMs are contributing to their respective teams. Just curious where that knowledge comes from...and i'm not being facetious!

  15. I'd also like to see the two Randy's back next year, along with a PP specialist as that appears to be one of their major downfalls and something they really weren't able to turn around until late.

I think it took a while for Cunnyworth to apply his values and system to the team, but once the mold started to gel, there was a lot of good things that came out of it. Despite the numbers building up in the L column, we started to see things we wanted out of this team: offensive fore-check, team toughness, and none of this sitting back and waiting for turn-over bullcrap. I think the two and a half men also thrived under the Randy's. Also, those bench penalties suddenly stopped too.

If you look at our bottom six right now, you can tell this isn't a properly equipped team. Injuries (yes, damn it, i said it) have played a spectacular role in us burning out in the last half of the year. When Ryan White gets 17 minutes a game and Bourque and Leblanc are (sometimes) part of the top 6, you know the (lack of) depth is hurting you. It's quite surprising really, but even Hamilton, who normally manages the call up quotient gracefully, has fallen this year. It seems there was small gap in the cupboard vs. what's coming next year (Tinordi, Gallagher, Bournival, Ellis, Pateryn, Holland, etc.). Had that gap been smaller, we might have managed things better, but there was virtually nothing compared to the last years (Grabovski, Kostitsyn, D'Agostini, Desharnais, MaxPac,) that was able to come up and make the smallest difference. Perhaps we can put Leblanc in there...but it wasn't enough to stop the bleeding.

Getting back to where i started, and supporting the argument from others that have posted here, the power play killed this season. Had the PP gone into the top-15 this year, we could be 5-10 wins higher, 10-15 more pts (thinking of loser pts we got along the way) and possibly be fighting with Buffalo and Washington for 8th. Alas, it's not the loftiest of dreams, but with the team make-up we have now...Gionta out, Gomez MIA, Cammy gone...that's a whole (potentially) top line of talent right there. Could have had 4 30-goal scorers this year...imagine that!

  16. The question should be WHY has he been PLAYED during the last two years.

Because despite his outrageous gift of a salary provided by Sather, he's still better than most AHL call ups or bottom 6 players we have on the roster. Short version: we don't have anything better to replace him yet.

  17. DD is not a number 1 center in this league. He is playing with too big, scoring wingers. Even Gomez might be doing decently between those two. DD is having a great year, but I don't think he is the key to that line. If you drop him with Bourque and Gionta, he will drop off considerably.

We need a true number one center. Then we can decide who between DD, Eller, and Pleks we should keep. One probably has to go. I might be tempted to trade DD for a scoring winger as I think his trade value is very high right now and I am not convinced he repeats this years performance (especially without Cole and Pacs). The other thing to keep in mind is that small guys like him tend to be very hot, then get broken down with the years faster then the bigger guys.

Now if we get a big number one center, then I could see DD and Pleks being our other centers, but this means Pleks is our 3rd line shutdown guy (which is would be fantastic at). I am not sure Pleks would settle for that.

I wouldn't agree completely with this. I honestly think DD is the catalyst on that line. MaxPac stated he was the best center (or player?) he's ever played with. Cole was almost up for a career year in points. Had he not had a slow start, he could of passed the 60 mark. I think a lot of it has to do with DD being able to find these guys just about anywhere. He's extremely quick in making decisions with the puck. Plekanec is an equally good distributor of the puck, but i think DD has better game vision.
