  1. Spector's site (spectorshockey.net) is reporting that Forseberg could be had at the deadline if the Flyers continue to flounder.

Could you imagine if we picked up Forseberg at the end of February for the rest of the season and the playoff run?

Maybe some people wouldn't want to see Samsanov-Forseberg-Kovalev, but personally I think that would be quite nice.

By the way, his salary would only be $1M for the remainder of the season.

Let us know what you think.

  2. Deffinately the worst effort of the season,

Absolutely horrible! I don't think half the team wanted to be there after the first.

    - Samsanov and Koivu were completely invisible tonight (yeah thats right Koivu lovers, he was bad!).

    - How many times did Souray, Rivet and Niinnima gave the puck away?

    - The whole team was out of synch; how many times were the Canadiens offside in the third ?

Only positives - Perezhogin was awesome. He was blazing fast all night, finished his hits, drove to the net, and created a bunch of scoring chances. He deserves to play with Kovalev next game (on the second line). And to lesser extent, Aebischer was solid.

  3. I hate it now when people say that all they hear about on TV and the radio...blah, blah, blah is Toronto, Toronto, Toronto. So turn it off and go to your computer. In seconds you can be on the internet and reading this forum or go half dozen other websites including newspapers like the Gazette, where you can find great information about the Habs, as well as talk to other fans with great thoughts and views about the team.

Yes the CBC is probably biased towards Toronto, exactly like RDS is biased towards Montreal yet nobody says anything about that, and thats not going to change till after next year when CTV outbids CBC for the rights to NHL broadcasting. But most likely nothing will change and it'll be all leafs all the time. And to boot they'll probably hire all the CBC staff that gets purged when that happens.

But I will agree with the living within the vicinity of Toronto. It is now easier to cross the border and drive through Upstate New York and pay their tolls than it is try and drive the QEW and 401 to get to Eastern Ontario and Quebec.

    Kaos,

I was not complaining about the lack of coverage of other teams in the Toronto area besides the Leafs. I was complaining about the completely subjective and unrealistic journalism and opinions of the fans. I do use the internet to get Habs coverage, and I do listen to radio shows and TV shows on the Habs. That is why I know the Leafs coverage is so horendous compared to the Habs. That being sad, Montreal is almost the complete opposite in terms of fan opinions. It is like the Leafs are 'half full' types and the Habs' fans are 'half empty'.

Regarding the bias of the broadcasters, I was not specific enough. Obviously, RDS and regional coverage will be biased, but I meant to refer to national coverage, i.e., Harry Niel, Bob Cole, Don Cherry. I just think it is unproffessional for commentators to voice the opinions or to make the slanted comments that these people have made in a nationally televised event. It is also irresponsible for CBC to not address this problem and the voiced concern that has been put forth.

  4. Well said 'Markov and Komy' and 'Kozed' (but not so much for you kaos),

This is pure and simple a learning process year for Latendresse. He is playing of the fourth line, learning what it takes to play in the NHL, and above all else, he is learning what it means to be defensively responsible (something not many QMJHL players know coming straight out of that league).

The coaching staff, like the rest of us, sees the potential this guy has. That being said, the coaching staff does not hold the same expectations of that of most of the fans. All the staff wants to see is consistency, hustle and improvement, not necessarily a 20 or even 10 goal season.

In my opinion, he has not looked out of place on the fourth line.

  5. Just try living anywhere within a 4 hour drive (sometimes even 18, i.e., Northern ontario) of Toronto.

All Leafs, all the time in the papers, tv and radio shows and magazines, talking about:

    - how players such as Domi, Belak, McCabe and Tucker are so unbelievably good

    - the planning of the Cup route at the beginning of each

    - how the CBC anouncers are not obvisouly pro-Leafs supporters

    - and above all else, how to almost every fan (who is not a fan of hockey but rather a fan of the Maple Leafs) their beloved team can do no wrong

Oh God, do I hate the Leafs and their fans.....

  6. I've been on other sites, mostly bands where they have sub threads. Such as lounge, NHL, Habs Prospects. Why don't we open a rumour thread(Habs related).

It is easy to see us Habs fans enjoy them regardless of their nature. BS or not they are fun to discuss and if we open the thread and remember that it is all with a grain of salt, I don't feel that it will make HW look bad in anyway. Besides, Spector is making a living from it. It's not hurting him in anyway when things don't develop yet we all go to his page 5 times a day.

The new open thread about rumours is cool. It just sucks having to sift through everything to find something you want to read, and half the time the subject gets changed and you get lost.

Problem solved. If you don't like rumours then don't go into the thread.

As far as Fanpuck goes.......Let me start by saying you and HW have done a wonderful job and I enjoy coming to read.

You do jump the gun and blast people a little too soon at times and it's annoying. I speak from experience. I read Spector once about a trade and started a thread, and a minute later, I read something about a Theo trade so I started another thread. When I went to check for replies I had a message from you that I was no longer a member for starting BOGUS threads.

Both threads I started eventually came true.

Since then you have managed the site a little better although the same complaints are creeping in from other members. I think the Sub menu thread on rumours would take the burden of deciding what's WORTHY off your back. We as true hockey(HABS) fans can handle THAT ourselves.

    Thank you!

That is what i am talking about. A thread for rumours, followed by sub-threads about specific rumours is exactly what should happen. If people don't like unsubstantiated rumours, then don't enter that thread. Everyone would be happy.

    Fanpuck, what do you think?

    Great idea 'HABBER-oooooKNOWS!!

  7. While I can't say I agree with the various reasons, I thank you anyways for your explanations.

I just figured that some people enjoy discussing various rumous, whether they are legitimate or not. People like to imagine the potential of such trades, and discuss the pros and cons. I am fully aware that these sites are full of shit, but I still check them twice a day. And I know other members are the same.

And so, I issued the poll to see where the members stood, figuring that the leaders of this site would want to meet the members' requests. You know, give the members what they want.

That being said, I don't run the site.

    Sorry if I offended anyone.

  8. To whom this may concern:

Why would you go and shut down such an innocent poll (Re: Fanpuck's shutting down my poll on whether there should be only one thread for habs rumours)?

What is this a dictatorship? Are you needlessly censoring any poll or healthy dialogue that might cast your opinions in doubt?

All I was trying to do was gauge the members feelings on the Habs rumours. And by the number of responses on this thread, it seems that there are lots of people who love rumours!

Anyone who has a comment on this issue, please reply.

  9. I personally do not like it, because as the rumour sites have shown there are tons of Habs rumours. Only one thread would make for one hell of a long list of multiple conversations mixed with multiple rumours.

Edit: this topic isn't open for discussion, see the last post of the thread.

  10. According to Kevin Gibson's Blog on hockeybuzz.com, the habs have offered Ribeiro, Souray, Ryder, Aebischer and a first round pick for Malkin:

"On the rumour scale, KGB(1) Ryder, Ribeiro, Souray, Aebischer and a first-round pick for Malkin. Montreal also signs JP Dumont as a result of the freed up cash.

Let me add this. I did not get this from PJ Stock, I have never even received and e-mail from the guy. I don't listen to the Team 990 in Montreal (you're welcome for the free plug). A retired player in Mount Royal sent this to me and it was not via PJ Stock. This is the only reason why I am posting it, because it is from a player. Not as guaranteed as my Pronger to Anaheim, but slightly better than Belfour and Shanahan to the Wings."

    http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=2621

First of all, let me say that I would complete this trade in a second. Malkin is going to be on the same level as Ovechkin and Crosby. That being said, dream on Habs fans.

For one, it is way too much of a salary swap. Montreal would be saving close to $7M, while the Pens absord around $8M (roughly). Is Pittsburgh, a franchise on the brink, willing or stupid enough to do that? Secondly, these are all players with one year contracts. There is no gaurantee that any of them will stick with the team to see the true fruition of this trade. And thirdly, why would Pittsburgh need another goaltender when they already have Fleury and Thibault?

Pittsburgh is a team that is rebuilding. They have two of the best young guys in the game, not to mention a potential eite goaltender in Fleury. If this team is trying to market itself to either Pittsburgh or any other potential buyer, why would they take on $8M in salary to still miss or barely make the playoffs, when in fact they have one of the best future rosters in league?

  11. I dont think Buffalo wants Ryder and Ribeiro (4.1M$) when they can keep Briere for 5M$. I wouldnt trade Briere for Ryder and Ribs. Id rather do it for Ryder and a draft pick or something like that.

There is no way this trade happens. Buffalo has a very good team, that is built for the new NHL. I highly doubt they will give up Briere, unless the right offer is made. Montreal does not have the assets to get this deal done. In return, Buffalo would be seeking players that would fit their style of team (speed and defenceman), while making an immediate impact. Ryder is not very fast, and he is not a centre. On top of that, who else can Montreal give up? Komisarek (who would replace him in Montreal)? The young forwards (Perezhogin, Kostsisyn, Plekanec), are unproven scorers, and it would be too risky for Buffalo to hope one of these guys could produce.

As much as I would love to see Briere as the #1 centre with Koivu as #2, I know it ain't gonna happen.

  12. Gman!

Please. don't read one line from my post and use it out of context from my entire post to insult me!

I really don't appreciate it! Try to post your opinions and arguments, minus any personal insults! However, if you choose to head down that path I am happy to follow.

"You must have been a Leaf fan before being a Habs fan." - Gman (Today, 09:26 PM)

I guess it may take one to know one eh?

Your point however, on his stats is true. Briere does have better NHL stats than Ribs!

My, comment about them being equal is based on their ages, wages compared to their contribution to the team, development, junior records, injuries, skill levels and chemistry to the team and their lines. And the risk taken by the team.

    And for the record!

Yes I admit, the leafs are my second best team from the bottom of my list of favorite teams! Its a long list!

    Chips!

Your point was never taken out of context. You compared Ribeiro's and Briere's age, wages compared to their contribution to the team, development, junior records, injuries, skill levels and chemistry to the team and their lines. You concluded that these two were somewhat equal!?! I said I disagreed with that conclusion and I still do.

In your first post you wrote that Briere is tougher on the puck, Ribeiro is more likely to get injured, Briere puts up more points. All points I agree with (except for the fact that Briere plays with more intensity, and so he is probably more likely to get injured as his past has shown), but you concluded that the two are almost equal because Ribeiro had a slightly better Junior, is two years younger and makes less money. You also ignored the fact that Ribeiro is not liked by most of his teammates, fought Koivu in practice, and the fact that Briere is the captain of his team.

    Besides that;

    - Their junior stats are irrelevant.

    - Comparing their age would be fine if you truly think that Ribeiro has displayed any potential for improvement. Remember that this past season he played on a line with at least one pure goal scorer and still had a worse season than the previous. Oh yes, and this is the new NHL, an NHL that favours the skilled guys.

    - When comparing salaries, you have to acknowledge that Briere was outstanding before he was injured. He put up 58 points in 48 games! Ribeiro had 51 in 79. Briere has the potential and past record to support at least a 90 point season. He would be a #1 centre, not a #2.

Mike Ribeiro is slow, lacks heart and intensity, has a weak shot, and dsiplays no leadership potential. Are these attributes you would characterize Briere as having or the opposite?

  13. This trade is not going to happen.

If Buffalo doesn't want to spend $5M on their best player, they are not going to trade for players whose salaries add up to or close to $5M (i.e., Ribeiro and Ryder). As well, both Ryder and Ribeiro are on one year contracts, and if either has a good season another raise will be in order. Ryder deffinately has the potential to earn $3M per year after this season.

If this trade is to happen, it will have to be for Ryder and prospects/young roster players. Then, Montreal would need to dump a contract onto someone else, perhaps Bonk or Ribeiro.

    So the question in my mind is;

Does Ribs + 3Mil equal Briere at (5mil) ?; If not now then what about at the trade deadline?

These two players are almost identical, their NHL records thus far gives Brie, the advantage only slightly.

You must have been a Leaf fan before being a Habs fan. Because I've only ever heard Leafs fans over rate their own players that badly. Even if you don't believe the stats, just watching each player COMPETE on the ice tells you that Briere is a better player than Ribeiro is or will ever be.

  14. While I agree that are team finished very well last season after Bob and co. took over, and the off season moves improve the club on paper, there are critical issues that some people are ignoring.

    1) Samsonov and Koivu are injury prone. We do not have the depth at centre to replace Koivu for an extended period of time. As well, if Samsanov gets injured, the team needs another one of their young guys to play and produce like a top six forward. This brings me to my next point.

    2) Another critical factor in determining the team's succes will be the play of the sophmores. The Habs chance of repeating last year's performace hinges upon the ability of Higgins to produce similar stats, and Perezhogin and Plekanics continuing to improve while taking on more minutes. Furthermore, Komisarek played exceptional by the end of last season, and if he continues to learn and excel (which he looked like he was doing from one game to the next) the defence will be the second best in the division.

    3) The most critical factor in determining this team's success will be the play of the other teams. If you take a quick look at last years standings and the acquisitions of each team this year, you will notice the following:

    a) Seeds 1 and 2 both lost valuable pieces, but each made significant additions to stop the bleeding and still remain contenders.

    B) Seeds 4 and 5 still have pretty much the same team, except have added more depth.

    c) Like Montreal, seeds 6 and 8 have made moves that have upgraded their rosters, as well as their chances of moving up.

    d) Seeds 10, 11 and 13 have also made significant acquisitions or moves (or non moves in TO's case). Boston and Florida now have a more balanced team with better offence and defence. Goaltending will be the question in those cities. With TO, the same goes as the defence is immensely better with loss of Belak and Berg and additions of Kubina and Gill (as well the offence improves with the addition through subtraction equation). Not to be forgotten is that the Leafs added an exceptional coach who should motivate their team. In other words, these teams will be harder to beat and rack up more wins.

    e) Seeds 14 and 15 also upgraded their rosters and the develpoment of the two best young hockey players in the game will continue to soar.

The Islanders will continue to flounder with all thats going on there. And the Thrashers chances depends on the play of Lehtonen, considering their offence will decline somewhat with the loss of Savard. It is still too early to comment on New Jersey, as their roster seems to be waiting a major move with the salary cap constraints they face.

With all that being said, the Habs have a better team, but so do most of the teams in the Eastern conference. Therefore, their fate will lie in the performace of the youngsters. I think this year will demonstrate the new parity in the NHL, and making the playoffs will be a difficult task for any team in the league.

  15. I think that Aebi won't be traded anytime soon for two reasons.

    1) He isn't one of the best goalies available via free agency or trade (remember one of the best organizationsin the league gave up on him), so his trade value isn't very high. I'd put Nabokov, Biron, Giguere and Legace ahead of Aebi.

    2) Insurance is at a premium, as Huet may get injured or flop, and we don't have another goalie in the system ready to step in (come on, do you really think Danis is ready to play meaningful minutes?)

  16. Regarding Lang and Hudler for Souray

Why would Detroit trade a #1 centre and a great offensive prospect (who should make the team this year as a centre) for a Denfenceman with one year left?

    1) Detroit is already short on forwards, not to mention centres

    2) Detroit is already paying $7.6M for one Defenceman, so it seems unreasonable that they could afford to resign Souray if he had a good season.

Therefore, this trade would only happen if Montreal is throwing in some forward(s) from their roster. Otherwise, someone made it up (i.e., this Code guy or his source).

  17. I believe that a team's salary cap consists of 23 players pay for every two weeks of the season. So even though a team maybe be paying 27 players, some of those would be on the IR or on a two way contract in the minors, and their pay would not count against the cap. Thus, a total salary of $42.5 M (sans Ryder) is not an accurate reflection of their cap space, you have to consider which players will actually stick with the team.
