  1. Can't afford to lose these points against a beatable team.

On the one hand, I completely agree with you. On the other hand, this is a team playing its first home game of the year after a very long road trip. They'll be in front of family and friends for the first time, looking to impress the fans and the city. No, this isn't going to be an easy game at all - I think the Rag$ are going to be pumped and I fear we will face a completely different Ranger squad to the one that's played so far this year.

  2. So far, but it not exactly worth bragging about when your best acquisition is a coach.

Isn't it? How much are they paying the coach and how much impact on the team has he had? I think the best GM's are the ones who identify a need and fill it in the most efficient manner possible. At this point of the season, can we not say that Carey has gone from the troubled waters of last year to a highly reliable #1 who gives us a chance almost every night?

  3. Regarding Markov: slow start to the season but he's - dare I say it - our most important defender right now. Subban is flashier by far, but Markie is more reliable throughout his game.

At this particular stage of the season, I'd hazard to say we're playing with two #1 D's. (And yet somehow they're still not playing 30 minutes!)

  4. Regarding the kids: while it might seem they've "cooled" the reality is that they're playing against better opposition now (since they're ostensibly Montreal's best line) and they're still creating something almost every shift. Now they have to take that next step as a group and begin producing against the NHL's best. Once they do that, sky's the limit.

  5. Bournival really seems comfortable with Plekanec and Gionta. I'm a bit surprised by that as he didn't seem comfortable when he was in a scoring role in Hamilton last year. He played over 5 minutes in the first, that's a nice jump for him.

Speaking of TOI, the Habs' leader in ice time in the 1st was Diaz. He, Markov, and Gorges were all over 8 minutes.

I'm pleased Bournival is finding some game. I guess bringing him along slowly has worked for him thus far. As for Diaz, I find him to be an all or nothing player. When he's on, he's really good. When he's off, there are few redeeming qualities.

  6. I usually love Pierre, but that was NOT a late hit at all. Had he not hit Erikson in the head, that would have been one of those brilliant but brutal centre ice massacres that everyone loves so much. However he'll be suspended because of the "principal point of contact" for sure. The fact he "extended" after the hit is just another ridiculous comment since just about every hit of that nature has some kind of follow through.

Yeah, for me, not nearly so bad as it's made out to be. Shame Erikson wasn't hit in the chest and not the head - that's the problem. I don't see as Scott was headhunting; he went for an open ice crush and hit head first.

Now, since it's Harry Sinden's team, I can see this being 10 games and the interpretation being something like a late hit and head targeting. But had we seen that exact play with, say Chara on someone a little shorter, I wonder whether we're having the same discussion.

Once again, just another incident where the NHL is proving itself farcical. Penalties are not consistent and depend largely on the teams and players in question.
