Psst. I am an article writer for HW! Just not the HWL. Matt (sakicq) would kill me if I extended myself too far! He's already threatened me with exposure to the wrath of Patrick Roy When Facing Detroit In His Last Game In Montreal. Scary stuff.

    Dear sir. Dear, DEAR sir.

Not only can you bid on Traverse, King of all Tall Gangly People, but for a non-fan of the Habs (sacriledge, I tell you!!!) I'll even kick in a memento hockey puck from the team you most love (with a few small dings in it). habs fans don't need this pittance, we already own all the habs pucks we'll ever need - we got them all by sitting behind the Habs net and catching all the pucks that Travers winged over the glass when practicing his low-velocity slapshot (read: lob).

So please, offer any one of your plethora of first round picks and they will not only be considered but, when I find out which team you cheer for, they will be considered with the utmost pleasure.

  3. I have plenty of cap room and this is a guy who can take the place of Guerin on a line with Morrow for half the price. Lessard was fine enough and young, but this is a bit of an offensive upgrade. Dallas accepts and thanks the Devils for the fastest and easiest negotiations I've ever encountered.

  4. For the draft, 2005. I'm looking for a high pick, preferably a 1st rounder in the top 10 or 15. Here is what is offered:

    Patrick Traverse.

Yes, you heard me right folks! Patrick Freaking Traverse!!!

"What is this?!" you say? "Why would I need that waste of space?" I'll tell you why.

He will bring you to the promised land! We, as faithful habs fans (okay most of us) know that when Sir Traverse of the Oblong Table was on the ice, we were invincible! YES, that's only because opponents were laughing at us, but we'll take it!

"But what can I use him for, Mr. Colin, all-knowing and all-seeing GM? I can't actually put him on the ice in a game and win..."

No, perhaps not, but think.. just close your eyes and imagine...

    YOUR MASCOT!

That's right folks, you may never lose again with Patrick Traverse as your mascot! You will be the wonder of the HWL and the envy of family and friends! Tour buses will come by your home pointing and exclaiming that there is a GM who did what it took to get it done. The Hall of Fame will Deify you. Women will worship the Traverse-esque goatee that you will sport, and small waterfowl will flock to your every move.

    BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!

If you act now, the Dallas Stars will also send you 12 mildly used Ginsu knives! You've seen them on TV, well imagine how well they'll work for you as you cut the AAA-grade steaks that come from the winnings Traverse will bring.

This is a once in a lifetime offer folks, don't pass this one up. How many times in your life can you say you purchased THE item that made you a winner. Well here it is.

And now, for your sordid reading pleasure, I will present Patrick Traverse's important statistics. You'd all better sit down.

Patrick Traverse 31, $285K/1 two-way!!! (He will be resigned to a two-way contract when you act now!)

    Offence - 12

    Defence - 59 !!!

    Overall - 47

    What mascot has those numbers???

I know, the offer is already too good, but IF YOU ACT NOW, the Dallas Stars will throw in a used pair of socks! Yes, you DID hear me right! Not only will you get Sir Traverse of the Oblong Table, but you'll get a full set of mildly used Ginsu knives AND used socks.

    I humbly await your offers.

  5. Look at the phenominal difference in teams they played for! That has to be taken into consideration!!! One of the best versus the worst in the game. Washington is an AHL squad, and for Ouellett to pull what he did on that team means that, had Fleury really been all that, he'd have a sub-2 GAA and a BETTER save percentage. He faced some 200 shots more!!!

  6. Tough call, but I'll go with Torts who had arguably the least talented team of the bunch.

As an aside, these coaches are only half the picture since we, the GM's are the ones who do 90% of the lines stuff. My suggestion is that this award be stuffed with pickles and mailed to Sierra Leone since it doesn't have the relevance it does in the NHL. Instead make the Hannes Intrepid Award for best GM in the league.

  7. S'amazing. I make a trade like this and finally people start contacting me. LOL

You wanna know why I paid this much for this player?

I offered the same deal for Getzlaf, no.

I offered the same deal for Frolov, no - and he didn't even think twice.

I offered the same deal for Staal, no.

I offered MORE for Crosby, no.

I offered the same deal for Spezza, no trade contract. Bastard. :D

I offered the same deal for Richards, and that took so long and he kept trying to tease Klemm outta me!!! :D

So I went with the next player on my list.

I get an impact player, rather than 3 question marks.

18 could be great, could be just a 3rd liner, who knows? 33? Same thing. My next years 1st rounder? Depends on where I finish - but it's not as strong a draft year.

Did I overpay? Damn right I did. And I know it. Because in this league you have to overpay to get this type of player or you won't get anywhere. Now I go to the draft with two less picks, boo hoo. And yet, I still have #3 overall, and #6 overall. Guess what? Two franchise players to go with Bergeron I just picked up.

So, thanks for the concern, but I think I'm doing just fine. And if I'm not? Well, my fault then, isn't it. :D

ADIT NOTE: AND Gaborik. Same offer, no deal.

  8. In another case of Dallas overpaying to get the player they want... :D

    To Dallas:

    Patrice Bergeron: 19, $825K/2 82-75-80

    To Colorado:

    Atl 1st round, 2005 (18 OA)

    Dal 2nd round, 2005 (33 OA)

    Dal 1st round 2006.

I get a young impact player in Bergeron who can play both centre and the wing and who will be a star for years to come. I give up a lot, but I don't mind overpaying since the 18 OA is a bonus from an earlier trade and I have two of the top 6 picks this year. That should give me 3 fantastic players to work around for the future. Confirmed.

Thanks to Jet for a good time. Er... I mean good negotiations. :D

    Edited as per AP's instructions.

  9. I'm a relative newbie to the game, so perhaps this has already been answered before, but when I want to filter down the league's players to find the specific guys I'm targeting, how do I fill in the skill set that I want to aim for in the boxes at the bottom? I've tried clicking on them and typing in numbers, but nothing seems to work. Is there a trick to this, or is it a glitch in the version of the game I have?

It could be such a useful tool, but I can't seem to get it to work.

    Colin

  10. You make good points, AP. It IS hard to be judge of anything when you don't really see what's going on behind the scenes.

Perhaps you and Hannes can come up with a few ideas yourself on who really is the GM of the year and this stupid thread can be deleted. ;)

Then again, I still maintain that, while it was only a couple of deadline deals, Cadian did a fine job of turning a non-playoff team into a candidate for the Cup. It's no small feat in this game picking up elite talent. At least, that's my experience anyhow.

And I think any "opinions" I have must surely be coloured by the fact that I only joined late in the game. When I started this thread it was in the hopes that people would jump in and make far more informed choices than I did. GM of the month for Carolina? Perhaps that is more appropriate. *nods* Though I'm looking forward (read: cringing) to what his team will do in the next few years.

One last thing, STOP VOTING FOR YOURSELVES!!! Yeah, you may have done a brilliant job, but sheesh! :D Isn't that one of those unwritten rules that you never vote for yourself in things like this?

    ;)

  11. ...as voted by us, the GM's and not the game itself.

    In my opinion?

    1. Though he's not around as often, Cadian did a remarkable job at the deadline and that alone is enough for me to give him my top vote. His team has a real big shot at the Cup because of what he did then.

    2. DavidB took a team that was, as he called it, "a bunch of creampuffs" and turned it into a serious contender, despite some saying trades he did were too one-sided against him. He's stuck true to his vision and has done an admirable job at getting things together.

    3. Even though he only took over towards the end of the season, the dedication to learning and the deft moves he's made make Revvvrob my third choice. I feel he's turned Ning's kiddie playground into something that could very well compete for a Cup in two years. Sure, it helps that he won the draft, but if you knew the work he's done to get everything else to that stage, you'd be impressed as well.

Honourable mentions: Streamer took a mediocre team and made them into the top regular season club. Henne also took a mediocre club and has them challenging - in fact he did such a good job early on that he didn't have to do as much recently.

I hope everyone else takes time to make our OWN votes on who has done a great job. It's one thing for the game to pick someone, it's quite another to hear it from your fellow GM. Just ask the players - they think the award from their peers (can't remember the name, offhand) is at least as good as the Hart.

  12. Quite a day of bidding I do say!

    Dallas acquires:

    # 6 OA in this years entry draft.

    NYR acquires:

    Sturm 26, $1.9/5 75-74-76

    Halpern 28, $2.2/5 73-77-75

    Daley 21, $450K2way/2 63-72-68

Carolina's 4th round pick this year

Steep price for certain, but I hope to flip it for something I really need. Sturm hurts the most, especially at the price I got him to sign for, but in the end, I had to balance out what I needed with what I had, and I think I come out ahead here. Not that I feel I "won" the trade, but I improved my outlook.

Haha! I was laughing at that too! And Kovaliev too.

I'm not entirely sure, but I believe that actually might be the correct pronunciation of his name in Russian. I remember hearing something like that a while back and I was shocked that the RDS team had done their homework like that.

Frolov is pronounce Froliov, I think. Oh, and the accent on most Russian names in on the second syllable. FeDORiov. KoVAliev.

But I'm not 100% sure on all that.

  14. Two questions:

When is the next league-wide update going to take place.

How many, if any, of the trades listed on the trades page are going to be processed?

I'm sure I speak for a few when I say it would be nice to get a full update to the squad as well as an up to date list on who plays for me. :D

  15. X-Files. Oh wait, they took that off the air. *mumbles*

If you haven't seen it, take a look at Battlestar Galactica when it starts airing after Christmas. Easily the best new Sci-Fi series by far - though Threshold and Invasion look okay (have 'em taped but not watched yet).

CSI, of course. The West Wing is probably the best written show on TV. Boston Legal is hilarious. L&O Special Vics Unit is extremely well done. And I'm gonna give My Name is Earl a long look, cause I love Jason Lee.

Oh, and Everybody Hates Chris. Lots of potential for that one.

Finally, The Daily Show. Pure Genious.

    Thank gawd for PVR's.

(I loved 24, but if you miss one, yer dead, and in the first season when there was a choice between hockey on the VCR while I was out at soccer, or 24? Well, the Habs won. Therefore I never went far with 24. Might have to rent it out.)
