    Colin

In Kovalev's defense, he has played a hell of alot more games.

Kovalev wasn't the point. Koivu was. Koivu has averaged the same PPG as our "superstar" and yet if you were to ask, a fairly shockingly large number would say that Koivu could never be considered a number one centre.

I mean, the guy has played with one 1st line winger over the course of his career - Recchi. Well, and Kovalev for a bunch of games at the end of last season. But what do I know.

On the other hand, I notice none of those who feel Koivu isn't top quality have posted in this thread yet. Hmmm.....wonder why??????

(think I'm feeling a lil bitter tonight? I've had to edit this post about 10 times before submitting it to make sure I'm not TOO negative. Musta been a long day)

  2. It does sound good, but only if everyone is available at SOME point during that one day, otherwise you'll have teams missing out on the all-important first two rounds. At least if you spread one and two over two days there's a good chance that every GM might be able to make at least one of them.

I say these things like this not to be difficult, I hope you don't think, but because we have Europeans (5-8 hours ahead) and I think even an Aussie? (who is a plethora of hours ahead). Picking one 5-hour block to do two rounds would be convenient and good, but logistically, there will be a few guys who will have serious troubles being present for the draft at a given time. Now, I think they also have to realize thatwhile it may be less than fair, the majority will have to 'rule' so to speak. We can do our best to accomodate everyone, but if we can get 25 people in one 5-hour block, but not a couple of Euros or Aussies, then I think that's the best we'll do.

I guess my suggestion is to make the first two rounds last one weekend. Friday night and Saturday for round one - meaning Friday night let could be okay as an early Aussie day - though the Euros might have difficulties if they cannot stay up past two AM or so. Or just Saturday for one round and Sunday for the next.

There is another alternative, which could take longer, but it could also be far more efficient depending on the cooperation of everyone involved. What if, for example, you said picks 1-5 will be on this day at such-and-such a time. Getting everyone interested in those five picks together at that time will be much easier than having everyone around. Picks 6-10 will be held after a recess of an hour perhaps, and those people interested can hang around for those picks, and on and on. Rather than asking for everyone to be present for the entire two first rounds, you can allow people to book on blocks of time, which might make it a lot easier to plan around.

***edit*** As I think about it this way, that'll give each block of 5 picks the 'rush' that Fanpuck is looking for while giving everyone else the ability to tune in or out of whichever set of five they wish to.

At 10 minutes per pick, each block of 5 is done in less than an hour, and you can do a whole round in a day and not need everyone there for the entire thing. They can just pick the block(s) they want to be there for.

Colin - workin' on logistics. :D

  3. I think we need to be honest with ourselves here and consider the reality of what this league is: a group of people playing a game in their spare time. I'm not sure it's realistic that we will have more than 15 or so people on at any one time, even if we choose a specific time-frame. We've got GM's from all over the world, in different time zones and with different real life agendas. This draft will have to be completed with compromise or it will never come to pass.

    ***

The first issue that has to be dealt with, and I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, (though it's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things), is for the lottery to be held for the teams who don't make the playoffs. I assume we're going with the standard format that the NHL uses with the somewhat weighted system, and that's all good. But what are the logistics?

My choice would be for Hannes to do it on his own - Hannes because he's the Commish, but also because he's not in the playoff picture. If there were some way to do it otherwise, that would be great - a webcam and a couple of other GM's witnessing would add legitimacy. I don't want him to have to feel pressured that he's rigging it if it's discovered he had a deal with Washington for the first pick, or something like that (just an example).

    ***

As for the draft itself, while I agree with Fanpuck (really, I wanna have everyone's name; I feel decidedly awkward talking to someone whom I have to refer to as Fanpuck! lol) in that speed would equal excitement, I don't think there's any real way we can work it so that enough GM's are online to be worthwhile and to make it 'realistic'. Saying each pick has 15 minutes to choose or they default to the next best player defeats the purpose of the draft, and if that were going to be the case, I'd say we should either hand in lists and it'll be done like that, or you get the player in the position that you're drafting.

On the other hand, I don't think there's anyone out there who wants to see this thing drag on forever. If it does, there's every chance that there could be a trade at every pick, and that's both unrealistic and, quite honestly, boring.

From my point of view, I see the top two, and potentially the third round, as being the most important. The other two can produce interesting players now and again, but the reality is that there will be precious few players who will make anything after being drafted that low. So let's look at those first.

The final two rounds, I propose, should be done via draft lists, with no trades involved. You rank the players as you'd like to see them, with notes on positional ranking if you can find it. Your paper should be quite clear so that when Hannes (or the designated draft guy - I'll volunteer if there are no others) can figure out exactly who you want based on what's left, and you'll get that player. The final two rounds would be speedy, as they're done by one person, and would require no one present but the designated draft guru.

The suggestion of the first round lasting one day is a good one, though again, you won't be able to have everyone around for a full day, and I suggest that you won't have everyone around for even a few consecutive hours. Now, because this is a sim league and not the real thing, how about instituting a trade deadline for the second a third rounds after which everyone gives in a paper with their picks. It will make them go a little quicker, but will also give everyone a chance to move up or down before the round starts. Now, I know this removes the ability to trade up or down if you see a player available that you'd like, but again, sim versus reality. We have to make some concessions to make it all work.

For the first round itself, I suggest spreading that one as long as needed - because that's the one that everyone is guaranteed to be focussing on. (You could do that with the second round as well, which will make the process longer, but isn't quite as necessary, as I see it.) Announce the start time and after that, give each team a block of time - specific, in which to make a pick or a move. If someone isn't there, the pick is made from a list automatically, or, for one of the non-guided teams, the pick is the next best player (as most real GM's practice on draft day).

If someone can't make the draft, it's unfortunate, but again, this a game and we'll do the best we can to accomodate, but after that, we have to get on with it.

That might mean the first round (and perhaps second) will take longer, and I think that's fine, because those are the one or two rounds that everyone cares about most. For those that find it boring, it's understandable, but that's a concession that will have to be made in order to make it as fair and even as possible.

Well, that's as far as I've thought it through thus far, but if this idea interests anyone, there could certainly be more detail found to make it better for everyone.

    Trade Winds Swirling?

Whispers around the American Airlines arena talk of a trade brewing. While no trades can actually occur until the Stanley Cup is awarded, there are rumours swirling around the possibilities of Dallas trading its first round pick from last season, Mark Fistric.

Fistric, 18, is a capable young defender with ample upside and has attracted the attention of numerous teams since Colin Prichett took over as GM of the Stars. However, with the club flush with left-sided defenders, it seems Prichett may just take the plunge and ship the future NHLer if the right price is offered.

While inside sources have confirmed that the Minnesota Wild have inquired about Fistric's services, there are apparently another two or three teams asking about the defender.

Another player whose name has come up recently is Tom Poti. When asked whether or not Poti could be moved in the off-season, Prichett was most clear:

"Tom is all but unavailable. I understand that everyone has his price, but his value to us is perhaps larger than others might value him, so the asking price would probably be extrememly daunting for most clubs."

Poti, a 27-year old star, has a four-year $1.4 million dollar contract and it's pretty obvious that the player is huge value for the money. When acquired early in his tenure by Prichett, Poti was positioned as the defender around whom the club would like to centre its defence. Strong words and obviously a statement as to his value to the Stars.

  5. Two-thirds of his third line is better than my first. lol

Doesn't matter who wins between Ottawa and Atlanta, though, it'll be easy swimming into the semi's for the winner.

Lowly Dallas opens his mouth! :D

Who does the training but the coaches? I was just making the logical leap. ;) Plus, it worked with the whole Sather thing. Glen.

All this planning and scheming and waiting for next season... just to get rolled-over and beat up like a government mule by the Hawks.

I'm not one for getting on bandwagons to trash talk, but offering me Nils Ekman for my second round pick was enough to do it. :D

I hereby nominate our very own Minny-Me as the Glen Sather of the HWL. Quite like Glen, he's amassed a pile of players who should do much better, and yet he's failed utterly to make the playoffs. Quite like the Satherithinous One, he has traded away the bulk of his youth to attain these so-called Masters Of The Rink, and again, need I point out, he has quaffed on his attempts to challenge for the Cup.

And, to top it all off, quite like Glendolin the Goof, he has blamed it all on the coaching, and insists, NAY *proclaims* that Next Year Will Be Different, You'll See!

Some might say that Minny-Me is more reminiscent of Mad Mike on the Island, but I say nay, at least Mad Mike can draft - and is far more likely to reach the playoffs than Glen.

So, I need a second and the motion will be passed. Minny-Me will officially be Mr. Glen Sather of the HWL.

    Do I hear a second?

    ;)

    Contract Issues

There are quiet rumours circulating around the American Airlines Centre these days. After his necessary purge, new GM Colin Prichett has begun challenging the status quo concerning contract renewal. At least two of the current Stars have taken exception and have decided not to continue talks for the present time.

Jamie Storr was the first to apparently close the door on his journey in Dallas. While numbers have not been discovered, what is known is that Prichett is looking to keep the netminder, but in a limited role and therefore not at nearly the price the player is seeking. With a rebuilding franchise, one can assume that Prichett will be looking to keep the budget in line rather than burst its seams before the UFA open season begins.

The Morning News has also learned from his player agent that Nico Kapanen has balked at his offered contract and is now considering his options. While this newpaper has not formally heard of any trade demands, an unnamed source close to the club has indicated that Kapanen might be looking at that route if negotiations did not improve.

The biggest name to be swooping the halls of the arena, however, is that of Kevin Weekes, brought in during a later season deal. While already earning a fairly hefty sum as a backup goaltender in Dallas, his demands apparently had the door slamming the other way - Prichett having not enjoyed the lofty salary demands of the player.

While trading the goalie has apparently not been discussed, there has been quiet word that Prichett will qualify the goalie and let him rot if he persisted with his salary demands.

As to the other players waiting to discuss their situation, there has been little word. One can only assume that negotiations are either proceeding well, or have yet to actually begin. With the quality of the club in question there will certainly be tough times ahead for both players and GM alike.

Wont you ever shut up? Your team sucks even with all the big names.

... And in related news, have the Minnesota Wild become the next New York Rangers? Over budget, big names, no results?

    ;-)

  11. The Dallas Stars today placed the following players on waivers for demotion to the AHL.

    Downey (R, $425K, 1yr) 32-72-62 (demote to AHL)

    DiMaio (R, $550K, 1yr) 43-69-64 (demote to AHL)

    Sweeney (D, $550K, 1yr) 39-73-65 (demote to AHL)

    Storr (G, $400K, 1yr) 71-72-72 (demote to AHL)

    Zamuner (C, 61$1M, 1yr) 61-70-67 (demote to AHL)

  12. Confirmed.

I had a plethora of guys on the left, including a couple who were basically the same player. Ridding Kozlov isn't the end of the world, though he's a good player.

Kotsopoulous will help short-term in the rebuilding process and he comes at a great price. His defensive awareness will be a benefit to the team. The pick is the clincher, and while it wasn't as high as I'd hope I could get, it will do.

This takes Dallas off the trade market until the off-season unless something blows me away in the next hour or so that I'm on before vacation. I'm pretty close to where I want to be; the rebuilding can start fresh here.

  13. Perhaps adding an addendum to the HWL collective bargaining agreement on 30 June (game date) where cash cannot be involved in deals?

*shrugs* I haven't thought about it enough so I don't really know. Perhaps the "Comptetition Committee" can get together for some talks to determine if this is the best thing for the league? Bob Gainey would surely be available. ;-)

Seriously, though, if there's a division of opinion about what's best here, then I think the Commish's, at the very least, should sit down and discuss it, then make a binding decision that's implemented at the turn of the HWL year on 30 June. No more disputes after that, no more worries.

    An idea:

Perhaps cash can be added to any deal, to a maximum of 1/4th the total salary of all players involved in a deal. This would allow cash to still change hands, but would require a more 'responsible' handling of assets and cash.

    Example:

Zubov (salary, $6 million) and $1.5 million samoleans for a Chicago's 1st round pick.

(Not realistic, but illustrating the point...UNLESS, of course, you'd like to go for that.) ;-)
