  1. This makes me a little nervous. We just got rid of Gaithier and Gainey and it seems like we are creating the same situation again ie a GM with someone in the background pulling the strings. If the new GM is too inexperienced why not make Savard the GM and the new guy the Assistant GM? That way if things go wrong there is one guy responsible. This way, if things go wrong it raises the debate about who is really running the show. I know it's a bit pessimistic to worry about things going wrong at this point, but I'm not that comfortable with this.

  2. Do you guys have any opinion on why Tampa is so bad this year? From strong playoff team to lottery pick in one year wow. I haven't heard of them having massive injury problems like the habs, and as far as I was aware their team was mostly the same as last year. The main reason I ask is that Boucher may get canned and if so would be a strong candidate to coach the habs. For that reason I wanted people's opinions if tampas problems are due to bad or inexperienced coaching.

  3. What I like most about this is it feels like we now have a chance to progress. Maybe logically we could still go forward with gauthier but psychologically I think we needed a complete purge. Now that it is done it feels like a clean slate for the new GM to start fresh.

In regards to Gauthiers performance I think he did no better or worse than most GMs in the league in terms of his performance with picks and trades but what I really hated was his lack of class in regards to how he managed trades and how he sacrificed Cunnyworth to try to save his job. Those are the things that made the habs look like a classless organization and are why I am glad he is gone.

  4. This is from left field, but does anyone think we could bundle our first round pick and some prospects and get Ovechkin from Washington? If the Caps don't make the playoffs they may consider blowing things up and a change of scenery could revive Ovechkin.

Is this doable? And of so, would you do it?

We've talked about trading for lecavilier for years but I would much rather have Ovechkin than Lecavilier (even when he was in his prime)

  5. If they were going to make Roy GM, why wouldn't they have announced it by now? The trade Deadline is over so there is no reason to keep PG around. To me, this sounds like either

    A) PG is staying on next year.

    B) They have a new GM in mind but he is currently with another team.

    C) Carriere will be the new GM but they don't want to disrupt the current coaching staff any further this season.

Either way, I don't think Roy will be GM next season but could still be the coach.

Then again, what do I know?

  6. Just a thought from left field, but what say our new GM and coach took a new approach and said we're going to build an offense first team. We'll keep all our so called soft puck moving d men and build a game around them. I know we haven't got the forwards to play this game yet, but we could draft and trade towards it. Would this be too horrible to contemplate?

I kind of like the idea of not following the big is always better trend and building our own style, and saying damn the torpedoes. If you score 4 goals we'll get 5.

  7. I must admit to being a bit in the camp of not wanting a goon, but after saying that, I am really enjoying having someone who can do more than just hold their own. I agree about Laraque and as well as his moral code there was also the problem that he was too good and alot of guys wouldn't fight him. Eg Lucic

  8. Do people on this site realize it takes more than a one year tank to turn things around? See Pitt and Chic. for example. Do you really think that one 18 yr old will turn this around ?There is so much this organization needs:

Fire Gainey,Gauthier,Timmins and Boivin jr(what a joke that is) and Cunneyworth and replace them all with competence

Get rid of the Gomez,Skaberle and Bourque contracts

    Get a # 1 stud d-man. If Markov comes back pair himw/Emelin for a great 2nd pairing

    Two top 6 forwards

    A real 4th line

    A tough stay at home #6 dmen.Enough of these marshmallows(Weber,Campoli,Diaz}

Long way to go,but not impossible with a real management team.

I think people on this site do realize we won't be contending for the cup next year. What I believe is that with a change at GM level we can start heading in the right direction and a very high 1st round pick helps enormously to start this off.

I have read alot of people on this site saying pretty much the same thing so maybe you have misinterpretted that as people saying a one year tank will make us cup champions.

As you have pointed out several times, we are not that stocked with talent, so trading for a superstar or two is difficult (even trading for good players is hard) so alot of people would say that tanking this year is a good first step to making the team stronger.

Anyways, the main point from this ramble is I think we are at least 2-3 years away from being a contender, but with better management, a settled coaching staff and a high pick we can at least hope to be a playoff team on the rise next year rather than a bubble team constantly struggling to make the eight.

PS: Just in regards to some of your other posts questioning if people "call themselves fans" or are "fanboys", I think by definition, you can assume that all people on this site are fans to a greater or lesser degree of the habs, some support the team unreservedly and some question each decision management make, the point being we are all fans of the team and want them to succeed, so I don't think when people disagree with you it should bring their level of fandom (don't even know if thats a word) into question.

I think I read one of your posts once where you said you got in trouble playing hockey for mouthing off without thinking of the consequences. Hopefully this is the case with some of your posts as well, as I quite like reading alot of them. (just not the s**tstorm that results)

  9. As DON said its a mechanism against tanking.

That makes some sense, although with "fail for Nail" campaigns talked about on forums and traditional media, you could argue that it hasn't really worked.

It just seems unfair to a team like Columbus who I think are genuinely bad rather than tanking, that there is a chance they could miss out on a guy who appears to be head and shoulders above anyone else in the draft.

Saying that, I would be thrilled if we jumped a place or two via the lottery and got top pick. (would probably write another post about how fantastic the lottery system is lol)

  10. Can anyone explain why they even have the lottery? Surely the idea of the draft is the weakest team gets the best players. What's the purpose of doing something to artificially change the outcome. Its not like it's something that's really exciting for fans or at least to me it isn't.

  11. I can't believe after the season we've been witnessing this year we are talking about Halak vs Price. Most of us agree they are both good goalies and in a salary cap world you cannot keep both. I personally prefer Price but would not be complaining if we had kept Halak. Goalie is the least of our worries at the moment IMHO.

  12. I kind of agree about Bourque but am reserving judgement for the rest of this year. He seems to be a guy who plays with emotion and it would be difficult to reach a high level of intensity with the season down the toilet. I know these guys are pros, but even a 2-3% drop in intensity could make all the difference. After all it's not just Bourque who's not playing well.

  13. Just because he's on wing doesn't mean DD has to be the guy driving the net or the primary goal scoring presence on his line. He can still be the distributor and play maker from the wing like a poor man's St. Louis, or like a Tanguay is the playmaker on his line with Iginla, or like a Hemsky, or a whitney, or a Gerbe, or how a number of other wingers who are the primary playmaker on their line operate. The goal isn't to change DD's offensive game but rather to limit the defensive deficiencies I talked about in another thread, specifically the cycle game problem.

Having never played the game, I am pretty weak on the technicalities of playing the game, but along the lines of what you are saying above, could DD still play centre and have one of the wingers break up the cycle on defence? i.e is it possible to change roles during a shift?

  14. Sucks to lose to Leafs, but i would still bet Leafs have almost zero chance of playoffs and Habs are pretty solid in lottery pick, so some solace.

I have heard once that the draft quality has been downgraded overall, but i see some sweet choices at the top where Habs will be picking and also some solid prospects will be available in 2nd round as well.

But any of Yakupov/Galchenyuk/Grigorenko/Forsberg/Faksa/Collberg would likley all be a fine pick for Habs, the junior (& SEL) playoffs should sort them out a bit more also.

Last year Thomas Jurco, Ty Rattie and Brandon Saad were all 2nd rounders who appear to be steals/very good choices and this year, who knows how good a Frk/ di Gieuseppe/ Bozon/ Winter or a dozen other forwards slated for 2nd round will be.

Hab also kind of have an advantage because with a bunch of d-men already drafted, they really could skip a year in drafting any d-men or goalie and could (should?) concentrate only on forwards, unless a d-man really slips.

Good poiint about the second round. There has been a lot of discussion about who we should take in the first round and hardly anything about who we might take later. Do you know anything much about the players you mentioned as potential second rounders?

  15. That's great, but what's the point?

If I'm Markov and/or the Habs training staff, I'm telling him to wait till next year. If he knee is good to go now (ish), I can only imagine it will be that much better with eight more months of rest.

    But that's just me...

Surely as an organisation, the habs management would want to see him on ice this season if possible? PG took a huge gamble this year and extended Markov (and ditched Wiz) based (I hope) on advice from the trainers and medical staff that Markov would be good to go. I can't believe they would want to put themselves in that situation again.

With a high draft pick and UFA decisions to make over summer (potentially by a new GM) it would be hugely benificial to know Markovs situation based on some real games rather than the advice of the medical team.

  16. Actually, the main reason I would be happy to see him play at a half decent level is so that we don't have a whole summer of angst about Markov and endless threads on how we should have kept Wiz.

  17. I would love to see him play this season. At least we can find out one way or another what level he may be at for next season. (obvious statement I know but if he dosn't play this season, it potentially changes who we draft 1st and it also leaves alot of doubt around if he ever comes back)
