  1. For most guys I preach patience. But with Weber, and the fact that Subban will always be ahead of him on the depth chart; and the fact he's very similar to Diaz.... I think he's redundant.

RH offensive dmen... how many can you have?

Subban is the number 1 guy.

Can you play both Diaz and Weber behind him? I think its redundant.

I think Diaz has outperformed Weber, so I get what I can for Weber, and try to improve another area (young forward prospects).

Sorry but I don't get why you would do this. We have traded constantly for defensemen over the last couple of seasons. It seems to me trading away defensive depth at this point would be foolish, particularly as at the moment, you would not get much for him.

If we are going after young talent I would prefer to try and deal Spacek to a contender at the deadline when we would probably get at least the same or maybe more and we would only lose a guy that is on the downslope of his career as opposed to the other way round. I realise that I am slightly contradicting myself with argueing to keep Weber for defensive depth while suggesting we trade Spacek, but I just believe we should stick with some of our young talent a bit longer before deciding they are a bust. (Particularly as over the first few games Weber showed he has the talent, just needs some confidence and consistency)

  2. I guess I'm in the minority again. Don't like the term or the dollars. But I guess in terms of dollars there was a LOT of really stupid money being thrown around today.

Cole scares me because of what I saw of him in Edmonton, his age and the fact that as far as I can remember he played a lot with Stall - don't really know anything about this past year. Don't get why the Habs wouldnt try an lock up a 27/28 yr old AK46 who will be a UFA next year now, rather then a 33 year old Cole now.

I would have much rather the habs targete ville neino from Philly

I'm also probably in the minority of the Habs giving up on a 22/23 year old Pouliot. It's going to be even more painful watching him go to the damn bruins. If he does turn it around I will really be pissed at another squandered asset.

Lastly, I also didn't like the Budaj signing. This is a guy that has not shown any sort of consistent. He's played pretty good in some of the games against Calgary I've seen, but rarely has shown any consistency - something essential for a guy who isn't going to get a lot of starts.

I'm with you on the thought of giving up on Pouliot. I think we give up on these types of guys too early. I have an awful feeling that Pouliot on the Broons top two lines could put up similar or better numbers than Cole on ours for quarter of the price. (Sure hope I'm wrong)

  3. I really don't care that much who wins out of Boston/Philly, but I would like to see Washington or Tampa win the east. I would like to see this as it would be a confidence boost for free flowing attacking teams. If Boston or Philly win then I worry that a big team full of goons becomes the model franchise for the east for the next few years.

  4. Having been in the Forum on the night of the last Cup, I can attest to what a sweet feeling that is. I will never forget the sight of the great Patrick Roy hoisting Lord Stanley's mug and roaring in triumph right in front of us, as I stood behind the reds in the old 'standing room' section, with the building thundering like the end of the world and fans running up and down the aisles going absolutely crazy. I was on a natural high for days after. High-fiving Mike Keane as his float went by during the Cup parade was fun too

Will we experience that again this year? It's highly unlikely, of course, but you never really know. I'd feel better about our chances if Washington had not shown signs of actually figuring out how to win and if Pittsburgh had not played so astoundingly well without Malkin and Crosby. Two months ago, it looked as though only Boston and Philly could be rated genuine 'contenders' in the east, which gave us a pretty good shot provided the draw worked out. With four formidable teams in the mix, the odds drop considerably. Still, I like and believe in this team. We will be full value, whatever happens.

This hunger for a Cup was what I was getting at in an earlier thread when I said that I want the Habs to be absolutely ruthless with cap management going forward. Too many fans and analysts take a line that says, 'you can't sign this guy because of the cap, you can't do this, you can't do that, etc..' Sure you can - if you're prepared to slit guys' throats. I want to see signs that this organization is prepared to simply dump (say) a Gomez IF doing so will facilitate moves that make the team better. It's time to take that next step and to do whatever is necessary short of burning up draft picks to accomplish it. No more Mr. Nice Organization, says I.

You are a lucky man. Can't imagine how great it would be to be at a Stanley Cup winning game. Just the atmosphere would be amazing. I guess you're one of only 20,000 or so HABs fans who can claim they were there. (which when you consider the number of HABs fans in the world is a small percentage)

    Count me as jealous lol

PS: Sorry but I somehow stuffed up replying to your post correctly

  5. I've always thought it would be a good idea to make the salary cap an "after tax" cap. I.e the cap is calculated on salaries after taxes are paid.

I thought that would take the whole tax thing out of the equation in terms of attracting ufa's. Obviously the owners in high tax areas would have to pay more so I guess that may be a reason why they don't do it.

  6. I would be getting as much free stuff as possible. The players would all think it was wierd autographing jerseys for the coach.

I would try out the goalie equipment and take some shots from wiz, pouliot etc just to see what it was like.

Finally, the next time we played Boston, I would hijack the zamboni and drive it into Chara (and maybe Lucic) during warmups. Of course I would get off with this classic "hockey play"

Obviously the last bit is the only part that would help the habs.

  7. Has to be Boston.

    Its destiny.

They are Darth Vader to our Luke Skywalker.

We have ewoks in Cammalleri, Gionta and Gomez.

Hall Gill skates kind of like I imagine CP30 would, and Carey Price has the force.

As for Boston, I don't think Chara or Lucic would look out of place as extra's in the bar scene.

    definitely Boston.

GO HABS GO - May the force be with you.

  8. Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth about the police investigation into this Incident. In theory I do not agree with police investigating incidents in a sport where assault occurs on a nightly basis. I do believe it should be sorted out on the ice or by the league.

HOWEVER (shouting - I know) in this case (and several others this season) the league has clearly shown it is not willing or able to police its own players.

I am disgusted at Bettmans reaction to air canada which in my mind shows the NHL really has lost touch with public opinion and if it takes criminal charges against a player to change things then I say go for it.

    Best Wishes Patches

  9. I just don't get it. I thought I'd wait overnight to calm down about this incident, but the non-suspension call has my blood boiling again.

As I have said in previous posts, I have never played the game and therfore would not pretend to be knowledgable on the technicalities of the game, however I just don't get the whole argument over intent.

In my mind, it is irrellevant what Chara intended to do. The fact is he was doing something illegal (interferance or perhaps even boarding) that directly resulted in a serious injury.

The analogy that I would use is someone speeding in their car and hitting a pedestrian. In most cases speeding is not a major infraction and results in a ticket, however if you hit someone it is completely different and the matter of intent does not come into play.

I realise that hockey is different from everyday life and if you did some of the stuff that is allowed in hockey (fighting, roughing, boarding etc) in a bar you would be up for assault, but I still don't see how intent plays such a major part in deciding punishment for these types of actions.

In my mind it is simple:

Chara was breaking the rules and as a direct result, seriously injured someone (potentially ending their career)

He is guilty and deserves some form of punishment.

    Kia Kaha Max Pacioretty

PS: Seeing as we are still paying half of Laraque's salary, can we get him back for the next game against Boston? (kidding on this but would be somewhat satisfying to get some retribution)

  10. Wow - kind of depressing reading.

I have never played the game so would not assume to know as much as most of you on this board, but in my opinion the young guys eg subban, eller, Weber etc seem to be getting worse, not better, which is not a good thing. I could handle a slump year if it was building for a cup run, but this does not seem to be happening at the moment.

    My questions are:

    1. Is JM a good coach who is just having his team go through a bad patch like Washington did?

    2. Is he an average coach who has lost the team?

And if the answer to number 2 is yes should he be replaced and if so who with? Given that Boucher and Laviolette are already taken.

Hope these questions are not too dumb, but its not that much fun following the habs at the moment. The only good thing is nobody here in NZ folllows hockey so can still wear my habs jersey without too much taunting lol.

  11. Hello everyone, I've read these forums for a long time, but this is my first post, so apologies in advance if I have put this in the wrong place.

This is just my idea - Not a rumour I have heard anywhere.

I wondered what you all thought about trading Hamrlik to the Oilers for Sheldon Souray?

From what I could see their salarys are about the same (Hamrlik - $5.5M, Souray $5.4M) so the cap shouldn't be an issue.

    The advantages I see are:

    1. Souray would help our PP, especially with Markov out for the start of the season and Suban a bit of an unknown at this level.

    2. Souray would bring some meanness (hope thats a word) to the habs's which they seem to be lacking at the moment. I know he's not a genuine fighter, but he dosn't seem to lose too many from what I recall and he does stick up for teammates.

    3. The Oilers can't get rid of him and may even throw in draft picks with the deal.

    4. He has played in Montreal before so would know what to expect from fans, media etc

I know Souray has some defensive issues, but we have two solid stay at home types in Gill and Spacek who he could be paired with.

Anyway, just an idea and interested to see what the rest of you think.
