Gomer should get a bit of a pass because he is primarily a playmaker, and has been doing a superb job in that role until the Philly series. In effect, he's not a goal scorer, and *demanding* goals from him is a bit much. Plekanec is another matter; while he drew checking duties against Crosby, this fails to explain his uselessness against Philly. He REALLY needs to step it up - and fast. Pleks is part of the core of THIS group, whatever the future may bring.
AK46, what can you say. Of course we need real production out of him.
I still say the collapse of Pouliot is a major factor behind the loss of secondary scoring. Without him, we are one top-6 forward short, just as we were in October. Add to that A. Kostityn's spaceman act, and really, we have ONE solid offensive line + a good C (Pleks). (In fact, Pleks's vanishing may be directly linked to the incompetence of his line-mates). This series is really helping to bring out weaknesses that have been present all season in terms of second-line talent, but which were partially disguised by Pouliot's play for much of the season.
The short term fix is to throw Moen into the top-6 as a net-crasher and banger (JM used Pyatt in this role, but I really think the stronger and more experienced Moen is a better choice). And then hope that Pouliot (or maybe Sergei Kostitysn) can recover some kind of mojo on in the bottom-6, at which point we can move them up.
If JM doesn't want to put SK into the top 6 then maybe we can move laps back to C and have Moore move onto the Gio/Gomez line. This would leave us with a pretty good grind line of Moen-laps-Darche.
Also don't fear. As soon as you think the herpes habs are gone they just flair up again.

Am I wrong or has Plekanec often been given the assignment of shutting down Crosby? I've heard him credited (by someone on TV, probably Glenn Healey) along with Gill and Gorges with shutting Crosby down in this series. If this has been his job, then you can hardly fault him for his 3 points in 6 games. Also, I know that Talbot was given the assignment of defending Plekanec (at least at the start of the series).
Yeah, they mentioned that Crosby's goal was scored on his first shift where he wasn't playing against Plek.
So how about moving Laps up to the Gio/Gomez line? So far he has been playing like the X factor and could buy those guys some time and space.

looking good for Spacek, I hope he can play like he did in game one against Wsh where he dominated Ovy.
-
I agree, I'll go as far as to say we need one in the first ten minutes tomorrow to keep the offensive confidence going. They had a decent game offensively yesterday, a good start will keep them pressuring...on second thought, that goes against the key to success, score early and let Halak win it. Either way, we need to score early.
I pray for divine intervention resulting in SKost getting back in the line-up to provide an offensive spark and motivate his brother.
-
Malkin may be playing really well but Crosby's best effort on the night was racing down the ice for that empty netter. Cindy has been a dud this series which is a great sign for us.
-
Is anyone else considering kicking the tires on Colby Armstrong? He is gritty and would look pretty good in our top six.
-
If I hadn't switched to Crosby in the HW Playoff pool this round, there's a decent chance I'd have been 10th overall in the pool in terms of Round 2 points heading into yesterday's play. That being said, oh well, I'll live with it since it helps the Habs.
As for those non-calls yesterday, a little video refresher:
I have to hand it to CBC, I watched the game highlights on both TSN and NHL network and neither had the balls to mention the non-calls.

Gill and O'Byrne blocked a combined 15 shots! Nice to see the big men getting it done.

Any Gambler wants to keep playing when their HOT............
Halak probably likes the fact he play's again tomorrow, why have a couple extra days off to think about things........better to stay in the moment and play every other day.
I thought we were just feeling the wrath of bettman for ruining his Ovy vs Sid series.
-
TSN is pretty certain that Gorges is the leader of the team. I wouldn't mind seeing Josh as captain. I just hope that the captain is picked by a players vote and not the powers that be.
-
Haha, we only have three players with a positive +/- in the playoffs: Subban, Gill, and Rhino. Other than Moen and JM's whipping boy Sergei, who are even, everyone else on the team is in the red.
Not saying this is a bad thing, we have been dominant on both PP and PK, so the caps have to rely on 5 on 5 for all their goals.
-
Does PK stay up for game 7 or do the Bulldogs need him? I assume an NHL game 7 would trump anything in AHL, but that might not have been the deal. I think he would look great paired with Spacek, not sure where that leaves Hammer though.
-
Unfortunately Halak will be traded and if the habs can't trade Hamrlik they will buy out his contract to get more cap space. Regarding Pleks I think it's true that the habs are offering him around 5 million plus a season but I also believe that if another team offers him the same money or even a bit less that he will leave montreal. As for Laps I don't think that he really enjoys playing here any longer and may want to join his friend latandrese which is typical of most francaphone players these days. Please trade away spaced out Spacek along with Mara in order to free up more cash. NOW DURING THE OFF SEASON MONTREAL SHOULD TRADE OR DO ANYTHING TO ACQUIRE IGINLA FROM THE CALGARY FLAMES. NOW WOULD'T IGINLA AND CAMMELERI LOOK FINE PLAYING TOGETHER ON THE SAME LINE?
Mara was on a one year contract, and once Hammer is gone then Spacek can move back to his natural side where he is more productive. The one player I would target would be Jordan Staal. He makes to much money and has too much talent to be wasted on the third line.

Just so we are working on the facts...
The Pleks line is minus 3.
The Gomez line is even.
MAB is minus 5, worst on the team.
Hall Gill is even.
The Pleks line has to start outperforming the second line of the caps. The gomez line needs more points, but on the other hand, they are being matched up against Ovie so being even might be all we can ask. If our other lines were playing better defensively we might not be in this mess.
I will cut Spacek some slack as he has mostly played well against Ovie, but I think he is tiring. That is a tough assignment.
Hammer has sucked, but I am also miffed at Markov, who at best has been average. He needs to be our top D and a much greater offensive threat.
The Pleks line has scored seven of our nine goals thus far, so maybe we cut them some slack.

Actually, I meant with Price in net. You're right about Halak in game 2, but i thought he was outstanding in game 1. Any goalie needs protection from the crashing like the Caps did. You may be right though, let's see how he responds tonight and then maybe Price in game 4.
Price is quite a bit bigger than Jaro though, so he might handle the crease crashers better. Plus Carey plays his best when he is angry, remember when he got in that fight against St Louis? He was amazing afterwords.

I am pumped that Metro is back.. I really think that will help us put pressure on them and it should improve our PP (oddly enough).
I also hope they put a target on Ovie. The habs need to start finishing checks better and using their bodies. I realize we are small, but there are enough guys with size to do the job. I am tired of seeing our D hammered into the boards on every dump in, but our guys peel away.
I'm wondering how JM will use Metro on the PP now that our entire top 6 is healthy. Maybe he moves Gomez back to the point and plays Metro up front with Gio and Pouliot?
-
those tsn guys are idiots. Darche is out there to rattle V, just like the caps have been doing to Halak
-
I guess The Oder is done stinking up the net, I smell blood
that jinxed it in the worst way

It was good luck last time, so I'll just put this up again. Not that I'm superstitious or anything.

Spacey and Laps...I apologize for all the things said during the season.
I second that notion. Also if this is the system JM was trying to play all season then I'll apologize to him to. He really seemed to have a feel for his match-ups and he and Muller were great when they shuffled the forward lines.
HAHA love the title of the tsn article. No-vechkin. Golden.

HOME ICE ADVANTAGE
If Ovy thinks he was blanketed in game one just wait until we have last change at home.
-
hm none of our goal scorers were over 6 feet tall... that can't be right considering all we heard all week was that small players can't play in the playoffs.
btw I loved that Spacek picked up the assist on the GWG.

knew i should have picked thomas jagr

Is Lapierre's act starting to wear a bit thin?

I think some of you can't tell the difference between a grinder and a agitator. This is EXACTLY what everyone wanted laps to do all year, and now that he is doing it people are complaining.
Laps job is to make the other team so mad they would prefer to abuse him physically then follow their defensive assignments (see Orpik). If he went to their enforcer and accepted a fight then he would be doing exactly what they wanted him to do. It seems a lot of people look at the glory days with rose coloured glasses, but it isn't like they where saints then either.
