  1. Yeah, I wouldn't even the 6'2" Chipchura big (especially since he was constantly told to stay lean to improve his foot speed, what's the point?). Same with the 6'2" Latendresse, though he was built a bit bigger. I've kind of found it ridiculous that everyone that is 6'1" or higher in this organization is generally expected to 'play big', even though they still can't do anything vs. a Pronger type out there. We need some 6'3" to 6'5" guys up front. I think we have Conboy and that's about it up front. Engqvist is 6'3" I guess, too.

we could always go after Ponikarovsky at the end of the season. He is 6'4, 229lbs and will probably always wake up to play the leafs. Not sure where he would fit... wouldn't mind seeing A Kost go for someone who actually plays with some size. A Plex/Cammy/Poni line could be really good.

  2. Actually there is an "attempt to injure" penalty on the books......and Cooke/Richards fit the definition to a tee and SHOULD have been called for it.

    From the NHL's WEBSITE:

21.1 Match Penalty - A match penalty involves the suspension of a player or goalkeeper for the balance of the game and the offender shall be ordered to the dressing room immediately.

A match penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who deliberately attempts to injure an opponent in any manner.

A match penalty shall be imposed on a player or goalkeeper who deliberately injures an opponent in any manner.

So how does Downie get away with trying to break Crosby's knee, but Ovy gets suspended for playing with a little too much enthusiasm?

  3. With the Senators and Sabres both having problems, who says the Habs cant win the division? They're only 6 pts behind Buff and 3 behind Ott :D I think they would be the easiest opponent :)

I'd say Jersey is the worst opponent, followed by Pitts. Washington have a scary attack power, but they need more defense before they can win a cup IMO.

I could be wrong, but haven't we done quite well against Jersey this year? I know we have only played pre-Kovalchuk Jersey, but he hasn't really added as much punch as they had hoped.

  4. Once Hammer goes (something I'm not looking forward to, but which is inevitable), look for Spacek to revert back to his proper side and probably bring a bit more than he has thus far brought. Meanwhile, PK will have to step in and eat a fair number of minutes. Huge cap savings, conceivably without losing *too* much on D.

I like Gill. I do tire of fans always focusing on what a player can't do and ignoring what he can. Gill is a massive PK presence, some much-needed size on D, a veteran leader, and decently effective at keeping the slot clean. Teams need guys like that.

Anyone wearing last year's Stanley Cup ring is fine in my books.

  5. Well deserved maybe...if they look at what Blake tried to do to Plek, or the Moore hit where he was cross checked into the sharks net, thats the problem I have. On it's own Laps hit was terrible, but in the context of the other shit that went down, it was par for the course.

That was just as dirty as what Laps did. Laps was in the heat of the moment, trying to catch a guy on a break away. Blake threw plek to the ice, ripped off his helmet, and tried to smash his head into the ice. Both deserve suspensions in my opinion.

  6. When Bob assembled the team he picked guys who play well down the stretch and in the playoffs, and its starting to show. Lots of grit tonight, but they can be passive when they need to draw a penalty. Can't tell you how proud I was to see Gio going after Blake even though he gives up 9 inches to him.

  7. Gauthier can be let off the hook if he retains Moore so it's OK if he does that. If not it's a fail! But I have to believe that they have coveted him and maybe for a while. It seems logical he is signed this summer.

With how long Moore had to wait to sign this season, and how low his point totals are I think if PG offers him a deal at about 4 year for 5 million he will sign.

  8. With the deadline less than a day away, may as well start a thread for discussion on any deals that happen.

Just off the wire, Ponikarovsky to Pittsburgh for Caputi, Skoula (cap ballast). Earlier today, Ottawa got a little tougher (and a lot slower) picking up Andy Sutton for a late 2nd (SJ's). I really like the deal for Pittsburgh, Ponikarovsky's a legit 2nd liner, he'll be great with Malkin. Didn't cost all that much either.

That trade is such a failure for Toronto. They should be looking for high draft picks, not aging journeymen and former fourth rounders.

  9. Down here, definitely.

Although, now that I'm thinking about it, I don't quite get the hysteria up there to a degree. Why was this event so much bigger than 8 years ago? Seems like beating us on US soil would be a bigger accomplishment.

Going from never having won olympic gold at home to breaking the record for gold metals with an OT win in men's hockey could be the reason.
