  1. I don't agree with you, because, I don't know why you would wanto to penalize the guys that are actually worth their salaries, in order to try and control 's paid to the bottom feeders.

I really don't think that lowering the max available to true superstars like the Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin or Lidstroms is the answer - those guys who people pay to see. To me it makes no sense that guys like Gomez, Brad Richards, or Drury make only around $2M less then Crosby/Malkin.

The stars are what sells the game and get people to pay for the tickets. I'm sure there is a certain element (just as their was a certain element that watched crap like Jerry Springer), that will buy a ticket to see a Laraque, Ott or Avery, but they (I WOULD HOPE!!!) are a minority.

The only way the owners could try and rectify the situation, where the game's true meal tickets get their due, is if each team was only allowed to designate 1 guy as a franchise player and pay him the max and then have to keep everyone else signed under a hard cap. That would also support the goal of having greater balance across the league.

however, given that after the first 5-6 players there is a significant drop off in talent, there really isn't enough players to have a players to ensure every team has a true superstar. Which of course would mean that you would still have someone sign a gomez or Drury to a stupid deal.

You can't legislate against stupidity, othwerwise, they would have figured out a way to protect the rest of the teams against teams like the NYR, who almost EVERY FRIGGIN YEAR sign a guy to a stupid contract to increase their "star power".

I also think that such a strategy would prevent teams like Washington and Pittsburgh to be rewarded for sucking basically sucking for 5-10 years and stocking up on top 3 picks each year, since they wouldn't be able to sign more then one guy close to the max.

of course given that the NHL star players are clueless and don't really seem to care what the NHLPA does and becuase the NHLPA seens to be run by marginal players and clowns like Brad Ferance, a system like that would never be supported by the players.

Not sure if I agree. Mad Mike was GM with the NYI for at least 5-6 years - maybe more How long were we stuck with Reggie??

I won't lose any sleep because Crosby or Malkin are only making 7mil instead of 9mil to play a game. When you consider they already make more in one year than a doctor makes in a lifetime it's hard to feel sorry for a small (relatively) pay cut.

Back to the original question, I think we could have Plex for just over four mil considering the deal Stajan just signed. Plex may be better than Stajan, but their numbers are closer than most people would think.

Most important of all I hope to God PG doesn't overpay on his first signing. If he lays down the line with his first guy then maybe we won't be expected to continue overpaying for FAs.

  2. As much fun as these last three games have been I think it's time for Cammy to make a miracle recovery and come back for the third period. All in favor?

Barring that I would put Plex on the Gomez line for a few shifts. Spreading out the talent hasn't done much, so it's time to load up one line.

  3. Boston (23-22-11) at Montreal (28-25-6)

    Projected lineups:

    Darche - Gomez - Gionta

    Moen - Plekanec - S. Kostitsyn

    Maxwell - Metropolit - Lapierre

    Desharnais - White - Trotter

    Markov - O'Byrne

    Hamrlik - Spacek

    Gill - Gorges

    Halak

    GO HABS GO!

If its anything like last game you will have to switch the third and fourth lines.

  4. What a paradox. We need MAB off the fourth line to have it play fast and fierce to draw penalties, but we need MAB back on the PP so we don't go 1 of 7 again.

Spacek didn't really impress me on the point, and I would like them to try SK74 back there every now and then.

  5. We've all probably heard the expression, "sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make". I think that can apply to the Canadiens over the past while. Personally I'm very glad we didn't make two trades, that if the insiders were correct, we were at least close to making. The two deals I'm talking about were for Vincent Lecavalier and Iyla Kovalchuk.

Based on his numbers this year and his salary I would not have wanted us to give up young players or picks for Lecavalier who may be beyond his prime and we'd be trading for someone who may have started on the downside of their career. I think that happened when we traded for Dennis Savard. We gave up future potential for a player whose best days were behind him. As great as Lecavalier has been in the past, at this point in his career, I'm glad we didn't give anything up for him.

Regarding Kovalchuk, I heard Elliot Freedman say on the radio last week that the President of the KHL, Alexander Medvedev, told him that he wanted to build the KHL around Kovalchuk next season when he became a free agent and that he could earn $10 million tax free in the KHL. In Freedman's opinion there is a very good chance that Kovalchuk will play in the KHL next season. So for us to have given up young players and picks for a rental, to me that is a total waste unless we were a strong contender for the cup.

So, while Gainey may still make some deals, I'm glad we didn't make these two. They are both great players, no doubt, but I don't think they'd be good long term choices for us right now.

    +1

  6. The Panthers vs. Flames game tonight just goes to show it could always be worse. Florida entered the third period down 2-1 and they managed to get a grand total of TWO shots on goal in the third. :puke:

  7. Pleks, Sergei, Pouliot are all banged up and Bergeron is on the IR until next Friday. The callups are most likely a precautionary measure in case none of them can play tomorrow.

WOW! I hadn't heard they were all banged up, if we have no Cammy, Andrei, Sergei, Pouliot and not Plex we have no hope. Maybe we play two goalies at once...

  8. a) camm will play wing on the habs... forget anyone penciling him in at C

    b) if we did trade with EDM im almost positive 2 of brule / gagner and cogliano would be on the way... iwould loveeee eberle but that's wishful thinking if not there #1 pick although they might want to lottery protect it. ethan moreau??? no thanks... maybe brendan morrow from dallas!!

    c) hemsky would be a sideways move!!.

    d) SK is not going anywhere and that includes the KHL. he will flourish over the next 20 games given huge responsibilities and a sense of worth playing on the top line with no leash!!

e)PRICE NEEDS HALAK... hopefully halak stays and mtl continues to give him the starts convincing him to sign on 1 more year giving price 2 more years developing as his back up.. if he unsurps him then eevryone's happy and we make the right decision...

f)subban is a habs next year.... he wont be fighting anyone for a spot....

    g) carle's shoulder is a big question mark going into next season and forget maxwell, weber

on a final note: as everyone questions our depth i continue with a little hope.... we have had considerable injuries all season and yet as of today we are in 7TH mind you with more games played. with that said maybe we do have some depth upfront.......

    What makes you say this?

Price has played his best when he was the undisputed number 1. He was amazing i his rookie year after he got rid of Huet, then awesome in the first round. He faltered against Philly, but whatever, hes a rookie. The next year he started off strong then got injured and Halak had to step in. When Price returned he wasn't quite where he had left off a he suddenly found himself in a goalie controversy.

Halak may thrive off the competition and need to be pushed by Price, but I don't think Carey is the same way. He seems to do better when he is alone at the top, and i think if we end up trading Halak then Price will pick his game back up.

  9. I'm loving the Dion trade, not only is he a cancer in the lockerroom, but that means they are spending over 24 million on a top six WITHOUT Kaberle. Enjoy losing first Kaberle and then Schenn in a couple of years. Throw in Kessel's crappy deal and Gustavson as an RFA and they will have no goal support.

    Komi 4.5

    Beauchemin 3.8

    Finger 3.5

    Phaneuf 6.5

    Van Ryan 2.9

    Schenn 2.975

  10. Some nice trades done by the leafs. If they can get that much for Stajan, White, Hagman and Mayers just think what we should be able to get... oh ye, we dont have a GM that wins trades.

I don't know why everyone says the leafs won this trade, White has more points than Dion and Mayers is probably better than that Sjostrom. So basically it was Stajan and Hagman for Aulie and a slight upgrade in size on defense. Dion has great potential, but is very inconsistent and overrated.

  11. Well in that case, I wouldn't mind if Gainey were to trade Gomez for Kariya - not bcoz i want kariya, but only bcoz, it would get Gomez's cap hit off the books.

Again, I LIKE gomez as a player, but his salary is going to handcuff us from being able to icing a competitive team going forward. I'd rather move gomez and try and sign Pleks to a deal in the $4-4.5M range and then look for another center.

If Cammy is gone for the year, the habs may as well blow up this bunch NOW, rather then try and squeak into the playoffs. I'm not saying we should tank it, but lets face it, we NEED to move some salary and try and pick up prospects to make sure we are better next year.

IMO, the guys that they should be looking at moving are:

    - Mara (UFA anyways)

    - Spacek (doubt if they can move him, given his hit for the 3 years)

    - Hamrlik (again tough to move)

    - Gomez (again, $7.3M for his production just isn't worth it)

    - MAB - cheap cap hit, but is a UFA and may get us a mid draft pick or an experienced solid 3rd/4th line guy - the guys this year just didn't cut it!!

    - Metro- (UFA anyway) lets face it, should be easily repalceable next year, but could be a good affordable depth pickup for a team like WSH, PITT, SJS.

I'd even consider moving Gionta if we could pick up a younger and bigger prospect or player with more upside.

Unlike most people, I wouldnt want to move one of our goalies, unless its a deal that knocks our socks off. I don't think we would get enough for halak (unless packaged with someone else, i.e. if Halak + Gionta = Carter + draft pick). Halak is a an RFA and if signged to an offer sheet the return would probably be more then getting another backup or a 2nd round pick in return now. Similarly, with the numbers Price has had (win-loss), we woudn't get maximum value for moving him right now anyways. If we can, lets sign them both and let them EARN their playing time next year.

I wouldn't move any of our young guys (Ak46, SK74, MaxPax, Laps, Pouliot), unless we got offers that totally knocked our socks off. But depending on how Dags reacts to his 2 week conditioning stint, he would be a guy I woudn't be advese to moving, since he may be lost in waivers next year anyway.

Cammy, Markov and Pleks are the guys I'd want to keep and then get some more good, skilled, character guys to lead the young guys. Gionta is a great skilled/grit/leadership guy, I just don't like his cap hit for FIVE years. Moen is a great depth player to have, and honestly, we need more guys like him next year for our 4th line.

But seriously, I want to see a better plan to build for the future then what Gainey put in place last year and I'd like to see a new coach - yep that would mean that yet again we would have to eat a coaches salary - but at least coaches salaries aren't a cap hit. I'd much rather eat Martin's salary then laraques!

I'm sure most people think i'm over-reacting in light of the Cammy injury, but really, I think we had a fringe playoff team to begin with, with Cammy gone, we may as well use it as an oppertunity to try and REALLY build for the future rather then the Gainey Band-Aid strategy.

I agree that with Cammy gone we should forget this year's playoffs and set our sights to the future, but the problem is the guys you are saying we should trade. Mara, Spacek, Gionta and MAB all just signed with us and Gomez was just traded for. How does it look to this year's potential UFAs when we are having a fire sale on last year's crop?

  12. i keep gill as the 6th defencemen cause i still need 6 defencemen!! its gill or MAB there and frankly gill is the better D-man that's why.. no free pass he's just better @ D

Markov, Gorges, Spacek, Hammer, Mara, O'byrne =6

The reason you chose to keep Gill as opposed to Mara or O'byrne (I'm not sure who you are leaving out- probably Mara) is because he plays at about their level, but he brings a huge asset with his PK abilities.

The reason we keep MAB is because in the four or five shifts a game the fourth line gets he is just as good as anyone else we have tried there this year, and he also just happens to be an all-star on the power play

  13. How can you go from a 9 goals in 2 games performance to a 1 goal in 2 games performances witht the freaking same players on the ice ???

But we don't have the same players on the ice, we sent Dag and Pac down to the minors. Only now do we see that they were truly the ones carrying the team.

  14. MY PERSPECTIVE.......

    FORWARDS

with the upcoming return of AK46 to the 2nd line. i think are top 2 lines are both legit threats with the emergence of benoit pouliot.

the third line is dependent on maxim lapierre who many thought including me would take another step forward from his good season a year ago. to the contrary he has regressed. hopefully a healthy 2-way SK can find the form from his rookie season and a re- energized d"agostini can kickstart the third line (laps) into one of a fast, gritty line with a little offensive flair that can help negate a top line and possibly chip in a goal every 2nd game.

metropolit has preformed admirablly considering the many roles he's had to play. he and moen on the fourth should excel. however, the opposite side continues to be the question? after laraque clearly showed he was there to look pretty rather then nasty... and continueous rotations between countless players.. we have failed to fill that position. one must think if kostopolius was around how would an energy line like that look like. nevertheless MAB has continued to fill that role since the return to health of our def.

darche has played well in his limited action . however, white has provided the best result from the farm thus far

    DEFENCE

    markov, markov, markov

the habs transform when he is in our lineup. and since his return the habs PP has gone from #19 to #1 andjosh gorges has found balance that has allowed him to step up his game to the next level (the same way komisarek did)

hamirlik who filled in for markov as the #1 did a good job. now that he has found a place as the #3 with fellow czech spacek hopefully down the stretch they can form a legit shut down pairing.

the question marks on the third pairing continue to be who plays. gill is great on the PK but weak on even strength. MAB is great on the PP point but horrible in our zone. mara who i think is the worst signing of the year (not spacek) had a few good games but continues to battle nagging injuries and looks to find form. obyrne started the season strong but after an ankle break cant seem to hit stride. after an abysmal try on the wing. he is back to the bottom pairing where he belongs.

my take is ... dump mara and put MAB in the press as the 7th defencemen. look to subban who is ready for the NHL on injury stand by.

there is alot ifs and buts.... hopes that everybody stays healthy and all players can reach there potentials this season.

HEALTH continues to be our achilles but once healthy down the stretch i believe all our pieces might finally fall into place just in time for a run.

keep in mind the deadline is fast approaching and gainey might just tweak this lineup a bit.

wishful thinking??? maybe but definitly not far fetched!

    trolling? i think not!

You have been dumping on MAB the entire time because all he can do is play the power play, yet you mention Gill can only play the PK then you give him a free pass. if we can keep Gill on the third pairing mainly for the PK why can't we keep MAB for the PP?

Also when you consider whether it's Mara or Spacek who was the worse signing you have to take into account term, salary and age, not just performance. Mara was brought in for a depth role, while Spacek was brought in to hopefully play in a first pairing and PP quarterback role. They have both underperformed but it's hard to tell who has been worse.

  15. FIRST) MAB was signed 2 weeks into the season when our PP was in dissarray after the loss to relying on markov so much.

spacek has shown in multiple seasons that he can preform on PP and can flourish with his left handed shot and marky on the right.

spacek gets zero minutes with markov on the right point so can u compare? he has not had his chance with marky as he was first signed to do.

second) MAB is on the fourth line because he cant play d.... you clearly watch zero habs games if you think he brings more to the table on the fourth line then any one else.

    1) Remember how he made our powerplay respectable BEFORE Markov came back, something Spacek couldn't do.

    2) I watch every single game, and obviously I have seen Dag, Pac, and BGL play way more than you. You still haven't answered who you would replace him with.

  16. im aware of the salary cap and am also aware that more then 1/2 the league is over/under paid.

salary is the business side of hockey & i cant be bothered ... all i know is im tired of these "convert the defensemen to forward" shinanigans. MAB is not a top 6 defensemen. or a top 12 forward for that matter. he is a big shot at the point and liability 5 on 5. for 750 we can keep him in the press box in case of another "emergency" and dress a real forward! spacek once again is more then capable pairing up with marky on the 1st PP unit

First of all I disagree completely that Spacek would be better on the PP, he had his chance, the result was we had to sign MAB.

Second is who do you plan to have replace MAB on the fourth line? He obviously brings much more to the table than anyone else we have tried there.

  17. MAB makes 1/6 his salary because he had no job & no takers!!! that's everybody"s fall back... salary! guess what? i'm a fan and can give a hoots as$$ about salary. i'll leave salaries to the molson's to worry about.

like i said its everyone's classic scapegoat

Holy 21st century Batman! I just heard of this thing called a "salary cap".
