I don’t get why we’d give up that much for someone who is slated to be a UFA.  I also don’t get why Tavares would be willing to do this.  I get he gets an extra year going this route. But if he actually wants to come to Montreal and actually be on a winner after being in a perennial loser, why would he be part of a trade that the habs give up significant assets to get him, when the team would be stronger if he just signed with us a UFA. Having said that, unless we were to offer him $4m-$5m more than anyone else, why would he want to sign with a crappy management team after leaving another crappy management team??

I cannot read Tavares’ mind.  Therefore, I cannot answer your post.

I dunno, is Galchenyuk 'elite?'  3rd overall pick.

It's hard to know because it would all depend on the return. But no one other yhan franchise players should be untouchable, and since nobody seems to think the #3 pick is a franchise player, trading the pick can't just be ruled out of court. We'd need to see more specific scenarios and proposals.

Galchenyuk was the best player taken in the top 3 that year. :)

I don't know what the right play is but I don't think taking Zadina at #3 is the best for us. I would rather trade the pick for an established player or prospect, or even trade down to grab a center and another pick.

It just seems silly to me to have won the 3rd pick of the draft lottery and then trade it because we don’t need it.  We need elite prospects and this pick will get us one.

I watched Zadina play 2 playoff games in the Q in person, and I was not impressed at all. He also doesn't fill any organizational need. Good enough?

Organizational need?  Habs need players who can score.  Zadina can do that.

    It will be  dahlin 1

    Svechnikov 2

Zadina looks like 3... but its not clear cut.  1 and 2 are locks imo.

I dont think zadina is a lock

Zednik, Zubrus, Zholtok, Zalapski - Zadina on the Habs just feels right to me.

The oilers need to shed cap for next season.

The obvious place this starts is Noah Juulsen.  As the oilers really need RHD not as much lefties.

From there youd have to add and significantly.  Probably a winger like either gallagher or byron who can score but has a cheap contract.

    And a 1st rounder.

No way I’m trading Juulsen or Mete, they are the future on defense.

I’d rather send Alzner, Lehkonen, Lindgren, forward prospect & 1st for RNH.

  7. A couple of minor adjustments to my starting lineup for 2018:

    Pacioretty - Danault - Drouin

    Lehkonen - Galchenyuk - Gallagher

    Byron - Plekanec - Shaw

    Hudon - Mitchell - Hemsky

    De La Rose, Holland

    Alzner - Weber

    Schlemko - Petry

    Davidson - Benn

    Streit

    Price

    Montoya

Of course, this could change depending on what MB does with his $8.5M in cap space.

What else are you supposed to do with a dead dog?  And MB has been following the Burke model of trading away picks and prospects, or drafting and signing truculent/supposed character players and really developing nothing himself and signing old has beens.

With what we have to choose from I'd go with:

    Maxpac-galchenyuk-Drouin

    lekhonan-danault-gallaghar

     Byron-pleks-hudon

    shaw-mitchell-mcaarom

We may have some hope if Drouin can play centre, in which case I'd try both galchenyuk and Drouin on centre and hope the some kids surprise as top 6 wingers, coz I don't see hemsky doing squat.  At least Danault would be slotted where he belongs if by some miracle a guy like  Schrebak makes it.  On the other hand, if even Hudon can't make the jump, we are screwed in the top 6.

D choices dont matter.  No matter how you configure them, they will be a leaky faucet.

I crack up at the old timer - retired references.  I'm a long way from retirement and picked my avatar when the Habs FINALLY retired Dryden's number.  Robinson and Dryden and Gainey should have been retired much earlier.  Had they been French, their numbers would have been retired much earlier like Lafleur.  The Habs should have retired a lot of the the numbers of Habs from the 50's, 60's and 70's dynasties MUCH earlier.

    Whose Mcaarom?

    Maybe;

    Weber-Alzner

    Petry-Jerabek

    Benn-Schlemko

    Davidson, Strait, Morrow

Who ends up in Laval or sent packing?

If Jerabek makes the team, then Morrow gets sent to Laval.

Streit will dress just because of his prowess on the PP.

It's a battle between Davidson/Morrow/Jerabek for *maybe* two spots...

Agree on resign Markov. We have the dough..

RNH is not a #1C. This is what I'm worried about, that if we make the deal people will expect him to be that. He is Plex Redux. One of Galy or Drouin is still going to have to play C and play it well, if this team wants to be anything other than a faux contender.

I think its hard to say with RNH.  I mean, MTL played Danault as their #1 C last year.  Clearly, RNH is better than Danault?  What other options are there for MB, Duchesne is being held captive by Sakic.  Unless, MB is content going into next year with a depth chart of:

    Danault

    Plekanec

    De La Rose

    McCarron

and then wait until the moment is right and make a blockbuster trade to acquire a true #1 center mid-season.  One things for sure, I'd like to see DLR and McCarron get ice time over Torrey Mitchell.  Its time to play the kids IMO.

  11. I like the prospect of adding RNH, even if it means losing Gallagher.  Both players are in the same boat, questionable they can rebound to their old form.  Perhaps a change of scenery for both would do them some good and jumpstart their careers.  RNH would no doubt be our no. 1 center just on skill and pedigree alone.  Gallagher would slot in nicely on a second line with Draisaitl.

My guess at lines would be:

    Pacioretty - Nugent-Hopkins - Drouin

    Galchenyuk - Danault - Hudon

    Lehkonen - Plekanec - Shaw

Byron - De La Rose - Hemsky

    And then sign Markov :)

thats a great deal for us, which means they would probably hate it.

Pacioretty is the only 'sure thing' in the trade which means either McCarron or Scherbak needs to be replaced eith either Gallagher or Lehkonen.  In any case, it would be a blockbuster that would have to benefit both teams.

Shaw on the 2nd line?   And we are supposed to be better this year.  If we have any hope in hell we need galchenyuk at centre.

No way Chucky plays centre.  Team doesn't seem him there.  Shaw has played centre before and I think will get a chance in training camp.  Plus, put him with 2 skilled wingers and why not see what he does?
