  1. I am not sure what Columbus is looking for in regards to drafting a player but Edmonton almost certainly has to be looking for a D-man. As such the most likely scenario would see Edmonton trade down to Columbus to allow Columbus to draft Yakupov and then see Edmonton pick up Murray with the #2 pick.

With that said here is a perfect opportunity for Montreal to move up. We've racked up some picks by liquidating some of our players so can easily shed a 3rd rounder along with our first for instance to Edmonton for their 1st. It's the type of impact move the new GM can surely make. My prediction is Montreal 1st and Yannick Weber to Edmonton for the 1st overall selection.

  2. if you use the prospect to get another player to fill a need, then i'm all for it, but then again, why not just deal the pick AT THE DRAFT before making the selection if you see you won't get the player you want. That way, it's more interesting for the other GM because he gets to pick whoever he wants...

I think you need to evaluate whether the upside of the player you are selecting is better than what you can get via trade. If you the best player on the board is better than what you can get via trade then you select him. if the player on the board is not as good as what is being offered then you make the deal.

Personally I'd try to make a move to see if we can nab Heberdeau using our current assets

  3. but we have Tinordi, Beaulieu as top D prospects, we need prospects at center, we need a top franchise center!!! please don't draft a D unless all the good centers are gone...

I think you still take the best player available. If we have a ton of D prospects then you use one as bait to land that forward. What would Beaulieu fetch via trade for instance?

  4. Alot of talk of Molson allowing the new GM to bury Gomez obviously but there was talk of Kaberle as well. I cannot stand the acquisition but cannot deny he is a point producer. I wouldn't object to a Kaberle trade but would select him ahead of Weber and Diaz in terms of play (salary not included)

  5. If you want to talk big strong giftted scorers

Galchenyuk had about the same number of points as Grigorenko... only he did it as a 16 year old, not 17 in the OHL, on a worse team.

Galchenyuk is 1 inch shorter than Grigorenko, but weighs 10 lbs more... so he's actually bigger and with more muscle on his frame.

In terms of play.... Grigorenko loves to play on the perimeter, where Galchenyuk is a gritty player who drives the net and fights in the corners.

I like Grigorenko too.... but lets not pretend he's the only player who fits our needs period.

I have this scare that Grigorenko is going to be the next Vikor Kozlov.

  6. Depends on who the new GM is and where he sees this team next year and the future.

I think regardless of the GM Moen has to be retained. For a guy who can net you 10 goals a year but play pivotal pk time as well as stick up for teammates, he is a must.

  7. Well, if so, he would be a terrific candidate. I know it's easy to blame him for failing to turn that team into a Cup-winner, but he certainly did an impressive job in building it up to a point where not winning the Cup became an unacceptable outcome. He's got enough experience that nothing in Montreal would faze him and I like his willingness to make bold moves.

As long as we don't go off the chart and hire a McGuire, though, anyone on the list is probably going to do a good job.

What about Montreal pulling a deal to lure a guy like Dave Tallon.

  8. I'll answer question 2 first. No. I loved Koivu and letting him go was a mistake but he is not better than Pleks, costs more than Desharnais and should not replace Eller or a big 4th line center. So if Pleks and Desharnais were gone then yes but I do not see him as viable going forward.

As for your 2nd question. He is maxed out. He will never be better than what we just saw. 60 points is about as good as we can expect. Think about it. Cole had a career year, Pacioretty had a career year so will this happen again? Likely not. I will even take a it a step forward that if we can get a #1 center then we'd be a much better team with Desharnais gone and Plekanec playing in between Pacioretty and Cole.

  9. Renaud P Lavoie ‏ @renhockey

Vincent Damphousse is getting out of the running for the next #canadiens GM. Family reason.

    One candidate down.

I'm starting to like Brisson the more I think about it. Brisson as GM and Roy as coach.

Curious as to your thoughts on Brisson? Personally he'd be at the bottom of my list just because of that lack of inner workings of the GM position. I wonder if he'd give up the million he makes on the Crosby contract alone to work as GM. With that said I would take him on in a heart beat if it meant an inside track on Crosby when he is a UFA in a couple of years.

  10. That's exactly it, though. McGuire wants a team to just give him control. He doesn't want to prove he deserves control. At least Roy proved he could win in Quebec. At least Bergevin has worked every role given to him in Chicago with success. At least Loiselle has worked for four different teams in two different leagues in various roles.

McGuire is the college graduate complaining about no work in his field because he won't intern or do projects anywhere and just continues to work the 9 to 5 he had before he went to college. No drive. No want.

I can't speak for the guy so maybe his mind set is that he did his time serving in various capacities. But I don't even buy the "doing his time" argument personally. Gainey did his time, Gauthier did as well. JFJ did his time in Toronto, Housen in Columbus. You can go on and on of guys doing their time and ultimately failing. I just want the absolute best candidate so to me unless we hire Nil or Holland or perhaps steal Tallon out of Florida then there is absolutely no difference between McGuire, Bergevin, L'Oiselle, Dorion (out of Ottawa) or Brisebois. None of these people have been a GM at the NHL level and so none of them are more deserving over the other.

It literally comes down to personal preference.

  11. Didn't know that.

Again, that's arrogance on McGuire's part. He refuses to actually work in any level of hockey because the last time he was told to prove himself after Hartford, he couldn't coach an ECHL team to a winning record.

He was offered the job because he and Shero are apparently best friend. A matter of fact they were the best men at each others weddings. I think McGuire simply wanted to be handed the reigns of a team and not be behind the scenes like we was in hartford, Pittsburgh and Ottawa as well. Instead he wanted to take the TSN or NBC gig to maybe gets a bigger name for himself in hockey????

  12. The problem you have to ask yourself is would you select Chuck Fletcher as your GM?

If you said no, then do you think the Minnesota Wild were wrong in choosing him over Pierre McGuire? Yzerman was also selected over McGuire.

Did Minnesota and Tampa skip on some hidden gem or is McGuire just a guy with a ton of influence and friends in the media?

Best question to ask yourself is if McGuire was such a great hockey mind and Bowman always lobbies for him, why hasn't he worked for Bowman since Pittsburgh? Why wouldn't Detroit pick him up as an assistant coach or scout during their domination years?

Funny you should mention that. McGuire was offered the Assistant GM in Pittsburgh and he refused it. Shero then hired Fletcher as an alternative.

  13. If you are okay with picking loadmouths and stuff then why not Roy? He has had much more success then McGuire at every level and honestly would be a better hockey broadcaster/analyst as well if he went into it haha!

McGuire just isn't as good as other candidates.

Thats impossible to say. And how exactly has Roy had more success at every level? I know we all hav favorites and those you don;t like but Roy's experience was playing and then being a coach/GM of a Q league. A league where Quebec remains at the top of the league because they are a rich franchise and outright pay for import players to play. Apart from this he has no experience

  14. Likely Tampa Bay Lineup

St. Louis - Stamkos - Purcell

    Malone - Lecavalier - Brown

    Pyatt - Thompson - Connolly

    Wyman - Segal - Wallace

    Brewer - Hedman

    Clark - Lee

    Mikkelson - Aulie

    Sebastien Caron in net

    Likely Montreal Lineup

    Cole - Desharnais - Pacioretty

    Bourque - Plekanec - Leblanc

    Geoffrion - Eller - Blunden

    Staubitz - Nokia - Palushaj/Dumont

    Gorges - Subban

    Markov - Emelin

    St. Denis - Campoli

    Peter Budaj in net

TSN should be showing the game.

A game for the ages tonight. 2 powerhouses on top of their games gong head to head. 2 veteran laden lineups.

    Should be amazing

  15. There is virtually no difference between a guy who is 5'11 and a guy who is 6'0. I don't worry about that at all. Gallagher is the only really short guy. Also as FG said Talent > size anyway.

No difference between a 5'11 and a 6'0 but when your line up for the next few seasons has Gionta, Desharnais, Plekanec, Leblanc and you potentially add 3 more guys who are under 6'0 then where does the size factor come into play? Eventually we have to stop this mentality and take a chance on a player like a Getzlaf instead of always choosing the best guy on the board.

Unless we can have a GM in place who can take a Gallagher or a Kristo and package them to land that elusive big center at which point you always take the best guy on the board.
