Brunet is an interesting comparable. He was quite a valuable player when healthy.
The thing about Brunet is he'd go on these little offensive tears. I remember when he was still young, thinking, 'gee, if this guy ever puts it all together, he could be a good top-6 winger' Eventually I figured out that he was just a good third-liner who got hot periodically. But still, if Leblanc turns into a healthier version of Brunet, that'd be OK. I think he has it in him to be somewhat more than that. But I could be wrong.
Flashes yet ultimately a 3rd liner right. Dependable on both ends of the ice.
Not saying Leblanc is not and will not be valuable because we all need those Johnson or Brunet type of guys who don't cost us goals, provide character and still score 15 goals a year.

MLB has 9 different teams win the World Series in the last 11 years
NHL pre-lockout had 14 out of a possible 16 different conference finalists in the last four years pre lockout... the years that Teams were overspending and you had to "buy a winner"... some of those finalists were tampa, Calgary, minnesota, san jose, all small market teams at the time.
This idea that teams buy champions is not really seen in the evidence.
In fact there was less parity and more dynasty teams before players got the right to be free agents and you could hold a team together.
It was harder for a loser team to build a group that could knock off the 70s Habs or the 80s Oilers and Islanders than it is for a small market team to compete today.
The idea that "your team can't compete without a salary cap" is a myth.
Don't forget the misconception of Detroit simply buying cups. When in fact you look at the line-up and the majority of the key players were all home grown.

There is no chance that NJ takes back Gomez. It just won't happen. Nobosy wanted him 3 years ago let alone now after 2 back to back bust season. A team might take a chance on him if we sweetened it by adding an elite prospect to the trade sort of similar to when SJS acquired Malakhov from NJ in exchange for a 1st rounder +.
As for Gionta, sure there is a chance he'd go back to NJ. Afterall NJ still wanted his services before he signed in MTL, Gainey just came in with higher term. I will say however that there is no chance that he would be dealt in exchange for Clarkson.
In a hypothetical if Gio was dealt back to NJ it would be in exchange for something like Dainus Zubrus and a 2nd rounder.

No way he becomes Draper. Draper was one of the best skaters in the league who excelled in the faceoff circle. He had limited offensive production but he was IMO one of the best shut down centers in the league. Whether his original days in Detroit paired with Kocur and Maltby or when they formed the grind line....Draper was a mainstay.
Leblanc is just oen of those guys with average size, average offensive ability......middle of the pack type of guy. I mentioned he reminds me of PJ Axelsson but for a name closer to home maybe a guy like Mike Johnson, Benoit Brunet type of guy.

Sure and I agree, but going after signing bonuses, and going after performance bonuses for ELC guys are two very separate things.
Not all "bonuses" are the same.
I know that there is a difference between a signing and performance bonus. I also know that a performance bonus can be applied I believe either the year of the bonus or the followng year. whereas a signing bonus is just averaged out.
All I am saying is that these bonus' are becoming a sudden trend and you know the next CBA is going to deal with them. ELC for instance will likely have lower possible performance bonus' .

Gomez is Montreal's problem and it'll be Montreal who has to do something about it. We're not going to be able to unload him somewhere else.
Bergevin is going to play good PR to the NHLPA but he has to play his ass off. Molson said he was fine in so many words of burying a contract in the AHL and Bergevin simply didn't see the purpose of a buy out, which he was correct on.
Like I said the only team I can imagine acquiring him would be Phoenix but even then the likelyhood is so slim.
With that said I would not be surprised to see the Habs enter the season with Gomez in the line-up. H struggled in Martin's system because of the dependence on defense but with Therrien's up beat, high tempo style I would honestly not be surprised to see him bounce back.
I am not saying he is going to be a 70-80 point player but would we be happy with a 50 point season?
I don't know, so many questions, we know there will be changes but I wonder where. Will we really start the season with Plekanec, Eller, Desharnais, Gomez, Galchenyuk and Nokelainen on this team?
-
Thing with Kaberle is that yes he struggles 5 on 5 but he does do well usually on the PP Unfortunately he is a player like Markov. Excels on that left point feeding a left handed shot with a big bomb. Assuming there are little changes to the blueline IMO that has to mean Emelin.
With that said Kaberle did put up some really good numbers while he was part of the team. His problem is that he was basically paired with rookies his entire season who are learning the game, whether it be Emelin, Diaz or Weber. I wonder what would happen if he was paired with an established defender.

Semin rarely played with Ovechkin so you cannot point to his success as a result of Ovie.
when Ovie was most successful he had Backstrom as his center and then usually Laich or Knuble as his RWer.
Semin's success was based mostly on talent

Clarkson won't hit 30 goals again for one but I think this is a pipedream no way NJ would consider such a thing when there are better options out there.
-
There are quite a few teams who would take a chance on a kid with his type of shot making under $1 million a year. He'd fit in nicely with Detroit for instance.
-
If Gomez goes anywhere it will be Phoenix. They haven't hit the cap floor and seem to do well with those older guys. Would also save the NHL some money paying $5.5 and $4.5 respectively but with a player who's cap is $7.4. Actually saves them.

I think something major is going to change their. These front loaded bonus contracts are a trend which will be looked at for sure
-
Really? Where did you hear this?
I would like to see some veterans down there but maybe the reason nothing has been done is because we already have our #1 center in Hamilton.
he just doesn't know it yet.

Awesome....didn't even notice the forum thread title. Awesome

Eventually something has to give because how can we expect Gallagher to develop as a premier winger if he's got a 3rd line center as his pivot

You guys play it all wrong.
It's not about assembling a team of stars but assembling a team with strict rules to force yourself to be creative. Anyone can stack their team with stars. I haven't cared for an NHL game since NHL06 for the Gamecube and I love creating "Team Quebec" where every player has to be from Quebec (the D is crap) or my Las Vegas Millionaires team, where the rule is you have to trade all draft picks by the deadline and no player can be younger than 35. That adds interest to the game because you're forced to be creative.
Try it out sometime. Build a team with only players whose last names start with the letter G or only draft players under 5'9". It's way more entertaining than just having a D of Karlsson and Subban.
Haven't tried those but have formulatted a team with all colored players in the league. But always have exception for favorites.
-
Of all the players listed, I think Doan is the best. Jagr may have a higher production, but Doan has those intangibles and leadership qualities. He's also more of a power forward, which would be a compliment to Pacioretty and Cole.
He's also 4-5 years younger
-
I would. i think Semin in an offensive system like Therrien's would net 40ish goals a season.
Secondly he may be a "bad apple" in terms of effort but the guy tries hard in all 3 zones.
I would personally take a chance but I just don't see it happening.
-
I try not to go with the crazy proposals. I have one season with the standard team and then a couple of seasons with various changes including my dream team. That's the one I go crazy with.
-
Given our lack of centers and plethora of wngers, should we not try to develop Leblanc as a center instead of a winger?
-
When I think of Leblanc for some reason I think of him becoming a player like PJ Axelsson.
-
His draft position 5 years ago has little impact compared to what we have seen out of him in the last 5 years.
His learning curve has been great. And if you re-did the 2007 draft today, he'd be a top 5 pick.
it has alot to do with it. 5 years ago PK was not considered 1 of the best 40 players available that year but has developed extremely well to the point where he is our best Dman.
So we are assuming he will be better than beaulieu, Ells, Dietz, Thrower, Tinordi. But what if Tinordi continues on his pace and becomes the next coming of Pronger?
There is as much a chance of Tinordi or Beaulieu becoming a dominant all-star as there is the chance of them becoming average NHL players.

Really? Pyatt? Tghe kid worked but I would rather see 30-40 other 4t liners ahead of the guy

3 trades totally nhl 2012
kaberle/weber
to nashville
draft picks
those picks and bourque
to nj
for 1st
gomez and 2 firsts
to cal
bouw
sign
semin
and doan
if not doan, grab ak on a cheap deal to fill in??????
Love NHL12
For me I kept the line-up as is but parted with Weber, kaberle and Gomez.
Gomez was sent to minors where he was picked up off waivers. Weber and Kaberle were dealt to Florida in return for Keaton Ellerby.
My line-up is:
Bourque-Pleks-Gio
Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Cole
Desharnais-Eller-Armstrong
Moen-White-Prust
Markov-Gorges
Emelin-Subban
Bouillon-Ellerby
But hey NHL12 right
Shane Doan, is he serious, and do we want him?

At this point leadership in the locker room, character and respect among his peers and experience. I wonder for instance what would happen if Gomez had an elite goal scorer.
I really like the guy but that contract makes me want to push him out the door even though I want to see him play.
