Maybe I'm going overboard on Johnson, but the guy set a scoring record for defensemen on the U18 team, and came close to breaking the penalty minute record for the team as well, even though he missed a third of the season. There are some pretty good defensemen who have gone through that program. Suter, Whitney, Komisarek, Hainsey, Leopold, Tanabe.

He asked for comments... I would worry about Kopitar. Robert Nilson who was a first rounder a couple of years back, played most of his draft year in the SEL and had 20 odd points. Same with the Sedin twins. Kopitar played 15 SEL games and had 0 points in his draft year. His numbers are similar to Marcus Nilsson, another first rounder, who never managed to reach 40 points in the NHL.
-
Except he is bigger.
-
from the 2002 draft in Sweden. Johannsen split last season between the AHL and the ECHL. He had something like 7 points in 40 AHL games as a 20 year old.
-
Ducks have Ozolinsch, Salei, Skoula, Vishnevski on their parent roster, Kurtis Foster, Tomas Malec, Aaron Rome, Popovic, Shane O'Brian in the AHL, one of the best defensmen in Russia in Korsunov, plus they used their first three picks in the last draft on Smid, Jordan Smith and Kyle Klubertanz.
Smirnov had about 15 points all season in the AHL, and Chistov didn't do much better. Lupul is the only bona fide offensive player they have at the moment until Getzlaf and Perry are ready.
-
Then try to use that to tempt the Pens to trade the #1 pick. If they refuse, Montreal drafts Jack Johnson. That is my hope. Montreal sends Perezhogin their first and second round picks to Anaheim to trade down.

Obviously, they are telling him to focus on getting his defensive game down, before opening up offensively. Hainsey certainly has the capability of putting up points, he has proven that. With the NHL changing to favor speed and skill, Ron will be one of the league's better blueliners for the next 10 years at least.

When a flashy winger from a lesser hockey nation was all the rage. Kostitsyn.:nono:.
How does Johnson fill a need in Anaheim? Look at their depth chart, they are loaded with good young defensive prospects with very little up front.
If you go to all the trouble to write and article, at least do a little research.
-
I really doubt that they would draft Jack Johnson. I'm sure Burke would trade the pick to someone who wanted the defenseman if he could be gauranteed of getting one of the top forward prospects.
-
Well, both are 30, so I guess it is debatable whether they are "over 30" for another couple of months. Still, a very young team as it sits.

If he wasn't they would not have resigned him to a 2 year deal for pretty good money. Look at his background, US U18 team, NCAA All American, AHL All Rookie and All Star teams. You don't get that sort of recognition by being a poor defenseman. On most other teams Hainsey would have at least 2 solid NHL seasons behind him. With Montreal he has to wait until they clear out homeboys like Robidas, Traverse, Dykhuis, LaFlamme, Brisebois, and (hopefully) Bouillon.

Looks like there could be some very good prospects left on the board at #56 and #65 if the CSB ratings are any indication. Players like Levasseur, Latendresse, Paquet, Cogliano, Ryder, Hensick, Bailey...
I can't see much difference between some of those players and the ones available at #5 overall.

At least 2/3 of the Habs fans are overjoyed that Breez is gone. I've never seen that before. I guess Yashin will probably elicit a similar response if the Isles can ever get rid of him.
-
Actually I wasn't thinking of the Habs drafting a goalie in the first round, but the possibility of one of the teams ahead of them doing so. I could see Montreal taking Levasser or Vincent later in the draft. I would like them to use one of their second rounders on T.J. Hensick from Michigan. That kid is severely underrated.
-
Maybe one of the goaltenders, Price or Rask.
-
Agree with your picks, although I would put Ryan ahead of Kopitar. Ryan would make up for missing Dustin Brown two years ago, and Kopitar looks like a much smarter version of Kostitsyn. He speaks 3 languages fluently, including English.

Did I miss someone. Very good sign.

Bourret gave him a cheap shot to knock him out of the Prospects game. Took a full run at Ryan while he was behind the net tangled up with a defenseman. But if Bourret had to face him like a man, Ryan would kick his fat little ass all over the ice and leave him looking even uglier than he already is. Bourret should have been thrown out of the game, especially a skills contest with nothing at stake.

No, that would be too cruel. To finally come this close to not having to look at that pouting pouff and then be let down again.....
-
He doesn't have to raise a fuss. If he is honest with the Pens that he prefers to play in Montreal, and the Habs offer a huge package in return......
Better to have half a dozen young prospects who want to play for your team than one who doesn't. Particularly when you know that player has a 10 million dollar feather bed to land in if he jumps your team.
It will probably come down to a case of whether the Pens feel that they need both Malkin and Crosby, whether they can afford the two over the long haul, and whether they might hamper each other's progress in any way. I think they are the two best young prospects in hockey, they play the same position, they play a similar style, and they have similar personalities. The main difference is that Malkin is a year older and about half a foot taller. He could ultimately be the better player.

1. He has a 10 million dollar offer to play 40 game seasons with little travel in Switzerland. So if he really wants to play in Montreal, he has a lot of leverage to make it happen.
2. Pens have Malkin who is as close to Crosby as a prospect as you're going to get. If they make a lot of concessions to sign Crosby, they could lose Malkin who has a pretty cushy deal in Russia.

Maybe because they are all "B" Pool hockey powers, simpleton. Along with Belarus.

If I recall correctly, Hainsey scored more points as an AHL rookie than Kostitsyn did, despite missing a bunch of games due to injury. He also made the All Rookie team and played in the All Star Game in his first AHL season. Higgins has about 20 pounds of muscle on Perezhogin, and is projected as a defensive forward. Yet he still scored more points in the AHL. To my eyes that easily makes him a better prospect, even overlooking the fact that Chris grew up in North America. Plekanec has done everything that could be expected. Killed penalties, run the power play, jump into the fray. He has about 25 pounds on Perezhogin, and was way more effective as a 19 year old in the AHL than Kostitsyn. Chipchura? The jury is still out, obviously, but he is the type of player who won't have to score a lot or play on a top two line to justify his spot. No great expectations, but still I guy who will play some situational minutes every night.

If they pay him 3.25 mil or whatever it is, that would be a waste. I don't think that anyone really wants Breezeer at that price. If they buy him out, then they spend 1 mil for nothing, and someone else signs him for a reasonable price. BUT, if they sign him for 3.25 mil and offer him in trade while picking up half his contract (1.75 mil) then they could get a good asset for a net cost of less than a million dollars. Still not perfect, but better than the other two options.

I could see Minnesota taking a goaltender. They just have Duane Roleson and Manny Fernandez. Price or Rask could slip into the top 5.
