  1. The think that you have to remember about Chipchura, Latendresse and Price is that they have been practicing and playing since early August. First with the U20 camp, then the prospect camp, now the main camp. They have a big head start on most of the other players who didn't lace up their skates seriously until just over a week ago. Those other players will catch up as camp goes on.

  2. Not because he couldn't manage it, but because I think they want him to develop his offensive game more in junior. He could be a big time scorer, but if he steps into the pro ranks too early, he will likely never reach his potential offensively. That was what happened with Komisarek. They turned him pro too soon.

I actually think that Carey Price is more likely to start the year in Montreal than Latendresse. I think that Price is probably already better than Danis or Halak, and would benefit from travelling with the team for a few months and working on his game in practice.

  3. My proposal is to have the returning vets on the top 3 lines, Kovalev/Koivu/Zednik - Sundstrom/Bonk/Bulis - Ryder/Ribeiro/Dagenais (with competition from Higgins, Perezhogin, Hossa, Plekanec for the left wing spot). Steve Begin as the fourth line centre.

    On defense, Rivet/Markov - Streit/Souray - Komisarek/Hainsey.

Dandenault and Bouillon serve as a fourth defence pairing and fourth line wingers on either side of Begin up front.

    Whaddya think?:)

  4. Good to see Olivier Michaud in camp. Surprised to see Perezhogin listed at 6-0, 205 pounds. If he really is that size, he has a chance to be a solid NHL player. In Russia he was listed at 5-9, 171 pounds, or something like that.

I don't think that Kostitsyn will be in the organization by this time next year.

  5. When the Canucks made the deal for Linden, they were 5th from the bottom in the NHL standings. At the time of the trade, the price for Linden was a top 5 pick.

Houle got Linden for the 10th pick in a terrible draft (1999), when Trevor was 4 years younger.

I never said he was a "great" G.M., just underappreciated. A lot better than either of the Savards, though. They were plain awful. Reggie did as well or better than either of them with a lot less capital to work with. He didn't set out to trade any of those stars, each deal was forced on him. I think he did pretty well considering he was backed into a corner in every case. Jocelyn Thibault was 20 years old when Montreal acquired him and already had NHL experience. He was considered the top young goaltender around, was a top 10 draft pick and a WJC hero. He didn't pan out as expected over the long run, but he was better than Roy the first year after the trade, and a full 10 years younger. Rucinsky looked like Martin Havlat 10 years ago, and Kovalenko wasn't too shabby either. He was one of the top players on the Russian Olympic team, similar to Kovalev today.

Mybe you guys weren't around for that, but the Habs had one of the best records in the league in the games following the trade, made it back to the playoffs and were cooking with Rucinsky the hottest player in the league. He was injured for the year in one of the last games of the season and that really hurt the team in the playoffs.

  7. Latendresse had another 2 or 3 points tonight. So far since he was drafted, Guillaume has led the Canadian WJC camp in scoring with 5 points in 3 intersquad games, led his QMJHL team in exhibition scoring with 8 points in 3 games, and now leads the rookie camp with 6 points in 4 games.

The reason I liked his selection is that he produced so well and consistently as a junior. I only saw him in a couple of U18 matches and didn't focus on him that much. As long as the production is there the other details don't matter so much.

  8. Is that most of those players were about to become free agents just as Houle traded them. Even if Montreal could have afforded to resign them, most of them did not want to play in the city. If Reggie hadn't dealt them all the team would have to show would be some 3rd or 4th round compensatory draft picks. The team had a chance to sign every one of them at least once after Houle was dismissed as G.M. Not one of them has returned to the city, and rumor had it that Turgeon turned down a higher offer from Montreal to sign with Dallas.

As for Savard's draft picks....not one of them that I know of is a regular in the NHL at this time, with Komisarek the closest. If Mark Streit turns out as I expect, Gainey could have more draft picks starting for the team than Savard. There are many Houle picks who have or are playing in the NHL even though he left Savard with a bounty of extra draft picks and high position (7th overall).

  9. Bonk deal was good. Garon is overrated (unclaimed on waivers) and not well suited to be a backup. If he can win the starting job in L.A., good for him and he deserves it. Everyone will be better off in that case. Huet is cheaper, more experienced in the NHL, and doesn't have the same ambitions. Bonk is underrated and now that his salary is rolled back, not overpaid. The third round pick was a bonus from the Hackett deal that brought Nik Sundstrom, another underrated player.

As for Kovalev and Dandenault, you can make a case that they may be better than some of the other players available at the moment, but remember that their salaries will serve as benchmarks for the next 4 years. How are they going to resign Markov for a reasonable price in a year or two when he is obviously head and shoulders better than Dandenault. Suppose Jan Bulis outscores Kovalev (a distinct possibility in my books) the next couple of seasons. How do they justify paying him less than Kovalev?

  10. You're revisionist history doesn't wash, pal. First of all Turgeon asked to be traded since he didn't want to be even the #2 centre on the team. He regarded himself as a #1 centre, which he probably was. You can argue whether they should have traded him or Koivu, but one had to go. They got Corson and Murray Baron/Dave Manson/Eric Wienrich in return, so the production wasn't that one sided. Most of those players were starting NHLers up until the lockout.

Thibault was part of the deal for Hackett, Kovalenko for Thornton, Recchi brought Zubrus (Zednik) and a 1st (Perezhogin). Damphousse brought Marcel Hossa and a couple of later picks. Hackett brought Sundstrom and the pick that was traded for Bonk, I think. Montreal still has a lot to show for the deals that Houle made years ago for Roy (retired), Turgeon (free agent), Recchi (free agent), Damphuosse (free agent). Even after they traded them, they could have resigned any of those players if they wanted to, and the players wanted to come back to Montreal. I don't think any of them did even though Houle and Trembley were no longer there.

Better to have Zednik, Bulis, Sundstrom, Hossa, Perezhogin, Bonk, and whoever else came indirectly as a result of the deals than nothing which is what they would have had if they kept the players until their contracts expired. None of them wanted to stay in Mtl because of the ethic issues, the language laws, and the oppressive taxes.
