Here's a question: if Carolina decides not to match, can they announce that to make the offer sheet official, or do we have to wait for the 7 days to expire?

As far as I know they could make an official announcement whenever they want (except past the due date). But they'll likely wait the entire week just to keep Bergevin tied up as long as possible.

The way I read it was that he committed to spend 250 over time and had provided 70 to carry the league for the year. He was told that 55 would be enough. They filled for bankruptcy and now he is suing for his 70 million to be returned, because he was given false information prior to the investment.  But it was an unsecured investment so he's probably lost it. That's a pile of cash in one year.

Precisely the calculated risk Bergevin is acting on. Now maybe it doesn’t work, but given Dundon’s circumstances, worth the try.

I’d gladly give up Danault and a second 1st to get the deal done.

If the Canes are already not liking the contract I wonder if it would take less to entice them.

I actually don’t like having to add Danault and a second first. I think many here massively undervalue Danault simply because he’s a 50 point guy.

    Two 1sts, a 2nd, a 3rd, AND Danault..

Quite steep. Not saying I 100% wouldn’t but it could easily be a trade we lose.

    So I have a theory ... maybe a tin-hat one, but a theory nevertheless.

Prior to the free agent period start, Carolina said that they had been approached about Aho by multiple teams (including the Habs), and that they were going to match any offer sheet, but were willing to discuss a trade.

It's possible that Bergevin was trying to make a trade happen, but could not get any commitment from Carolina, and was worried about another team snatching Aho in a trade. So they decided to lock in the trade with an offer sheet that (1) they were willing to pay Aho once he was a Hab, and (2) that would be distasteful for Carolina (heavy first-year costs and only five years). The offer sheet would not need to be impossible for Carolina, just high enough for Aho to sign it, and for it to be very unattractive to the Canes (and Dundon).

Now continue the trade discussion, figuring out what player(s) Habs would send over as part of a side deal, and what they might get in return. The side deal would likely be skewed toward the Canes, and would give them some shorter-term prospects, whether 2019 draftees or young NHL players. If they can agree, Carolina declines the offer sheet, Aho becomes a Hab and the side deal is consummated.

Meanwhile, while negotiating, the offer sheet is hanging over the Carolina GM's head, giving him an incentive to negotiate since he neither wants to lose Aho for just picks, or pay the contract terms that the Habs offered. But he can't negotiate with anyone else since Aho now cannot be traded anywhere until next summer.

Maybe this is comparable to the fake moon landing theories, but something like this would actually explain today's events.

If I were Bergevin I would be doing exactly this. Enticing the Canes with a skewed side deal if they seem like they’ll match. Conditional picks or prospects. Condition being they go to the canes if Aho plays for the Habs next season. THAT would be shrewd GMing.

As you say, no one else can negotiate now.

Edit: for anyone saying “why not just send Aho a bigger contract offer?”

This way is still better because we save capspace.

I wouldnt have done an offer sheet, kind of underhanded in my book.

I understand Aho is a a great young player, but how does he make the habs a contender?

Still need defense, and now a quality RW,

Domi, KK, Poehling, Danault Suzuki are good young centers.

Im obviously in the minority on this move.

As Bergevin said, his priority is the Canadiens, the fans, Geoff Molson, not Carolina. I give credit to the guy for having the balls to do something that if successful, is a wildly positive signing. Offer sheets are within the rules. If GMs are gonna throw a hissy fit, it is what it is. If there's even a 5% chance MTL gets Aho for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, you do it. I commend MB for trying. In the mean time I don't get the crying about not signing Gardiner. Gardiner is still available AND MTL has the space to sign him and AHO.

Domi could conceivably make an excellent winger moving forward.

Tatar - Danault - Gallagher        as the 1st, shutdown minute crunching line.

Domi - Aho - Armia              Scoring line. Armia opens up space for the speedy talented Domi/Aho combo. Still Reasonably responsible.

    Drouin - Kotkaniemi - Lehkonen/Suzuki/??? exploitation line.

Moron or whatever other adjective people used for Bergevin over the last year while maintaining 8 million in cap space is certainly applicable now.

Bergevin et al., clearly misjudged the situation.  Now instead of $8 million in cap space theyll have ~$13 million.

If Carolina takes the 7 days to match, theres no guarantees any of the rfa/ufa are left to sign. Atleast not any that can impact this season.

Then Bergevin is cornered into the trade market and his track record there isnt exactly stellar or inspiring.

Lets just ignore all the progress the Habs have made over the past year then eh?

Philly tried the same squeeze with Nashville - did it work?  The canes have a new owner, there is NO WAY IN HELL is he going to lose his best player for the return he gets for not matching - especially when the consensus is that the Annual average is market rate given the other signings this year.  Nashville sucked up and swallowed the poison pill- so will the canes.  Hell, even Waddell said he thought the offer would be higher.  I loved the move, but in typical Bergevin fashion he fxcked up and as usual was hostile when reporters questioned him on why not making a higher offer.

Funny how EVERY friggin analyst said the offer was too low and is entirely based on the hope that the canes won’t want to pay the $22m in the first year. They won’t like it but they will match for the following reasons,

    - the return they get is not worth it for a 21 year old first line centre.

-the actual salary is close to market rate

-no way that Dundon would let his best player go for such a crap return in the first year of ownership. If he doesn’t match he is a bigger moron than Bergevin and I honestly don’t think that’s possible.

bergevin said hey considered all factors, but if he had any brains, he would have paired the poison pill with either a higher salary, or a shorter term than 5 years.

Bergevin has been good the last year, sending this offer sheet doesn’t warrant a moron comment. Most wouldn’t have sent it at all. Truth is, Carolina didn’t want to sign Aho to that deal, and MB is trying something outside the box

It was mentioned in Friedman's piece that the Habs had sniffed around.  If anything, I'd suggest yesterday's Shaw trade makes a Simmonds signing more likely, not less.

I’d be so upset if all this hype was for Wayne Simmonds.. (5 years ago I would have loved it).

    Shaw > Simmonds these days.

If it isnt Lee, Gardiner or both, count me as disappointed, and a little weary of Bergevin’s decision making for the first time in about a year.

  9. At this point I’m just excited it seems like something’s happening, whether is lee, Duchene, Gardiner I don’t know, but it’ll be fun if we land a big fish regardless!

there’s definitely a limit on how much I’d want to spend on some of these guys, but i’ve kind of resigned myself to the fact that it’ll be a bit of an overpay

I like how that required a special confirmation to report.  The AHL age minimum is a CHL-specific agreement; anyone not drafted from there is eligible to go to the AHL right away.  It's not that hard to figure out...

What do you think the best option is if he doesn't pull a Kotkaniemi and force MTL to keep him? AHL is extremely intriguing, but I can't help but feel like a year in NCAA may be the best for progression. CHL feels like a no - Caufeild needs to mature against men, not kids at this point.

Ahha, I should have revisited some reading material before posting.

So, maybe Shaw type speed with some hands?

I do realize no point comparing but first round picks always arouse my interest.

    Thanks.

Caufeild’s bread and butter is his shot. He is quick and agile on top of that, and has excellent has, but at the end of the day it’s all about the shot

What does it take, draft capital wise, to move up from 46/50  to 32/34?

Several players have slipped, and not necessarily because teams don’t like them, they just liked others better. The fact that there are Lavoie’s and Kaliyev’s on the board probably means it would take more than 46/50 to move into the low 30’s.

If we’re high 30’s 46/50 should do the trick

Hard to say if he will grow much; perhaps a little.  His brother is almost 2 years older and a little bigger at 5'8", 173 pounds.  On draft day when they announced the Habs selection and showed Cole with his family, his brother looked somewhat bigger than Cole.

I am pretty happy with the Habs picking Caufield.  They have not gone for a highly skilled player like this in a while, when they have not been drafting in the top 3.  He's a pure goal scorer, very shifty, but he's not a selfish one as I have watched several videos where he has dished the puck off to a linemate when he could have easily taken the shot.  Yes he benefited from playing on the same line as Jack Hughes, but he also scored when Hughes was at the U-18 tournament.  He could be top line player eventually for the Habs. I have no doubt he will play at least 1 year in college, since he's going to the same one his brother is at. He may leave after 2 seasons, similar to what Poehling did, who also wanted to play college hockey with his brothers, and did so for three seasons before turning pro.

Last few drafts have been kind I think! Juulsen, Poehling, Coconutmiami, and now Caufeild?

3 years ago we were pissed about how barren the cupboards were, and honestly now we have a top 10 prospect group imo

  14. 11 hours ago, Chris said:

Never heard of him before tonight.

    Scores a lot.

I think i read he is headed to Wisconsin

Well, be assured we just drafted the kid who set the all time USDP goal scoring record, ahead of Phil Kessel. And if I’m not mistaken, beat the single season record ahead of Austin Matthews.

There are articles out there asking “could Caufeild slip to the flyers at 11?”

Well he did slip to 11! And 12, 13, 14. Habs nabbed the best pure goal scorer in the entire draft. I really think he could be a DeBrincat clone. Confident he’s a 30 goal scorer.

There was no D i would have considered based on my Tiers.  the 4 best picks were all forwards.

Do you think Caufield will do any growing? I mean could he be a 5’10 forward by the time he makes the teams or does he seem like someone who basically tops out at 5’7

The Internet has killed a lot of the high-quality in-depth journalism. Pay sites like the Athletic are a way for good journalists to make a living.

I subscribe to the Athletic, to Autosport and three different newspapers. And it’s all for longer content, not the snippets you get on most free sites.

This draft was the most erratic I can ever remember, no contest. Legit 3-30 was a minefreild!

I feel blessed to have Cole MO Effin CAUFEILD. Guys. I think only Hughes Kakko byram and Turcotte had a higher profile. Like we honestly have a top 10 pick here. If he’s 6 foot Caufield is third OA

Hey, I do not subscribe to athletics, it showed up on my phone thinking would be a preview, and long and behold the full article popped up. I know strange,  ( must be a good sign , right ) so I copied and paste for myself and emailed it, and decided hey, for those who don't subscribe.. But yes received it even when I never subscribed. There you go! I figured for window of time now it's " free domain" but made share to credit the athletic.

Thanks thank thinking of us, seriously! I get you had us in mind! But there’s two levels to this. One you could just link us to the article. OR, if it’s behind a firewall well there’s people trying to make a living. I totally appreciate you trying to do us a favour but just be positive about the source.

I know Commandant does a lot of research and I’d like to support him for example.
