Geoffrion too ill to take part in jersey retirement ceremony

MONTREAL (CP) - Bernard (Boom Boom) Geoffrion will not be able take to part in his jersey retirement ceremony because he is too ill.

The retirement of Geoffrion's No. 5 will still go ahead Saturday at the Bell Centre before Montreal's game against the New York Rangers. Doctors discovered stomach cancer while Geoffrion underwent a surgical procedure last week in Atlanta. A Canadiens spokesman said Geoffrion's condition has deteriorated and he will not attend the ceremony.

The 75-year-old Geoffrion was a scoring star on powerhouse Canadiens teams in the 1950s and early 1960s. He is said to have invented the slapshot.

In 1960-61, the Montreal native became the second player after Maurice (Rocket) Richard to score 50 goals in a season.

The reality of life....coming to an end.

    Sad and scary.........

Best wishes, see you on the other side.....

    BOOM!!!!!!

  2. Definitely not a dive... It wasn't a severe spear, I'd say Boynton swung the stick around maybe 45 degrees.. and i don't even know if the tip of the blade fully caught ribs in the stomach...

I'm not sure what provoked him, but Boynton made a throat slitting gesture as he was being led off the ice by a linesman... which leads me to believe that the spear earned him the game misconduct, not the gesture...

Hope this helps... Leaf fans suck...

Thanks...........well it was enough to get Boynton suspended.

    Ivanans next Boston game?

Whether or not you like ribs(i'm on the fence) or not, he is on our team, so I have his back. I hope someone stands up for him. If that guy has room he can be pretty creative.

  3. Can anyone find a clip of Boynton's spear on Ribeiro? I saw it on t.v and I'm pretty sure it was a clear spear...But all of my stupid Leaf fan friends are saying Ribeiro dove again. I didn't think he did at all...If anyone can find a clip of the mayhem that went down in the 3rd period it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I didn't see any of it but apparently Boynton's suspended for making an inapropriate threatining gesture to Riberio........................................what's that all about.........???

    Can someone fill me in?

  4. Theo Quote......

``I'm anxious to go to Colorado and help the team,'' Theodore said. ``I'm really pumped up. It's going to be a great challenge.

``I want to make sure that I show everybody that Colorado made the better move.''

All I 've got to say is.......

"Hope in one hand and sh#T in the other, see which one gets filled first"

  5. Well just got home from work to find not much else happend. I was hoping for a scoring, big forward but, no such luck.

Anyways, I'm still buzzing with excitement, knowing Theo is finally off our backs!!!! STOKED

So, Mr.Ribeiro.....show you got what it takes ........or............you won't be re-signed by anybody next year...

Let's take what we have and push as far as we can go.........

    GO HABs GO.......

    Screw those Bruins.......

Man, that is one team that royally F&^^&cked themselves this year, PANICK STRICKEN!!!

    So glad we have Gainey!!!!!!!

  6. Ok, we saved cap, got a goalie who can play right now, but we just lost our best player, hands down, everyplayer has a bad year, this was theodores. big deal he is stil in my mind top 3 in the league!!

Colorado just set themselves up. ok you guys say we saved money, but now we have to go out and get ourselves a number on goalie, this team is only as good as its goaltending right? well huet and abby aint going to do it for like 4 years before price hopefully can step in, that mean we will have to spend some dough on a very good goaltender....i dont like the move, there had to of been a better goaltender to get straight up for him.....i would have rather got garon back, maybe even a younger goalie prospect.

Just watch .....we'll be fine with the goalies we have.....

  7. I'd personnaly much prefer Jokinen than Bert. Younger, more versatile and complete. At 5M$, Bert is still overpaid.

But still...Burt? C'mon....when was the last time the habs could walk into an arena with a guy like that behind them.

    Koivu would rock.............Burt woul kill.

    Begin? grow six inches

Kovalev is the only one that might suffer......he would either get really flashy or completely melt.......hopefully flashy....

  8. You are entitled to your opinion, but he had complete crap teams around him in those series and those were teams who probably would not have been in the playoffs without him.

I realize you have a very low opinion of Theo and you are entitled to it, but I think theo did some great things, is still plenty young, and can have a great future. I have never heard a hockey commentator say he was a bad goalie or over rated, in fact, they ususally refer to him as a money goalie who plays better under pressure. He is having a terrible year, I will give you that.

Your totally right. When he was hot in the play-offs or in that last ditch effort to win 10 games to make it to the play-offs .....he was awesome.......

Theo just always made me feel uncomfortable. There was such a difference in his game. It was either F&&$cking amazing or he totally blew it.

For instance...Brilliant against Boston last year 1st round and then complete crap against Tampa.

Or this year in general......He made me nervous every game even if we were up 3 goals....

    I beleived in him ....i just didn't trust him......either did his team-mates

  9. So why did Gainey paid Theodore so much money if he sucked???????? So using your logic i'm right Gainey is on crack. Dumbass

Like all of us, we, and gainey included, hoped Theo could put together those brilliant short-lived moments and turn them into a cup run.

I get that....and I hoped for it myself. but it just wasn't going to happen. I think gainey resolved this bad hopefull signing...which I don't blame him for....and was able to wash his hands of it.

    I think gainey is brilliant....

    Dumbass?

This is e-mail, I'm sure if we were in a room discussing this you would understand what I'm trying to say.

So I won't call you a name. You just didn't get it.

  10. I don't think Aeb is a bad goalie, but the issue has always been the playoffs. He does not step it up in the playoffs.

there is a reason that the Avs have been looking to trade him all year and are willing to take a chance on Theo getting back in form. They obviously believe Theo can take them farther and I agree with them. Doesn't mean he will, but he could.

Theo has never got past a second round...... He always bombs after a good little run.

Theo is the biggest let down in history of goaltending

  11. Even when Theo was playing terrible, I don't recall any of us going... damn, if only we could get Aeb....

He is not a long term solution, but perhaps there is more to come this summer, as in Luongo....

I didn't hear any of us saying we want Hasek, or turco.....................

I think abby is going to do well in montreal for the rest of the year .....might even suprise us like Huet did....

Everyone bagged on Huet.....now he's a friggin mesiah....not because he's good, because we got to thinking Theo's shaky goaltending was great.

That vezina trophy was really unworthy. it mindf#$%ked all you guys.....

  12. Is Gainey on crack??????????????????? Why trade Theo for a sub-par goalie when we are have two on the team in Huet and Danis. This doesn't help the habs now and in the future. Please Bob say it ain't so.

I think your on crack......Theo hasn't won a cup, actually Theo hasn't done anything except shut the door for a total of 2 play-off rounds and a couple of ten game winning streaks.....

gets a Vezina and everyone pays him like he's god.

He is not good. Everyone in the league knows this..That's why we get only Abby. Who in my eyes is equal to Theo only cheaper.

Watch.......he'll take us to the cup......it's our turn to burn Denver.

  13. Theo might turn it around, but when has abby ever proven he can? I hope you are correct and there is another shoe to drop on this one.

Look at the stats.........for the past few years ABBY has been right with Theo if not better......Theo is way over-rated.

Montreal wins this trade purely on money. because the talent is exactly the same. We do not lose here in anyway except we need a solid goaltender, we needed that in the first place anyway.

  14. This isn't exactly a good move by Gainey. Remember that he signed Theo to this contract just this summer. Now he's freeing the cap space by shipping out the exorbitant contract he signed him to?

Unless another deal is being done, one that requires the money Theo was taking up, this is a horse-shit deal.

I hear what your saying, but I don't think Gainey new Theo was going to 'SUCK' so bad when he offered the money in the first place.

Gainey just wiped the shit off his shoes and I say "GOOD FOR YOU" which means "GOOD FOR US" in Habsland.

ABBY is a really good goalie. Definatly better then Theo.......I don't understand why no-one has mentioned that yet.

  15. This is a ######ing disaster...this is Definitley Roy part two

There has to be something else coming back the other way...please oh please oh jesus christ please tell me theres something coming back the other way...

Even though Jose Theodore has struggle he's worth more than that.....Gainey got ######ing HOSED.....this is ######ing gay man

Abeischer is no slouch. His numbers are pretty damn good. So just relax. To say Theo is worth more is wrong. Besides that Vezina year, I think we got the better goalie.

And by the way.......don't compare Theo to Roy. Apples and oranges.

  16. Wow. I wonder who won this deal. We cleared a *lot* of cap space but I still think Theo will return to his previous form.

We win because he's finally gone...........

Denver problem now.......Average goalie with a huge salary.

Can't wait to see who fills the cap space.............Jokinen?

  17. Agreed with everything except..

Koivu- He is amazing no matter what. Let's remeber the guy hasn't been home in a month or more.

    I like Rivet.

Hate to think where this team would be in the standings or as a team in general if it wasn't for those two guys.

  18. No Thanks,

Not only for all the reasons stated through-out this thread, but we as habs Fans would have to look at this sorry ass mug on our bench during O CANADA.......

Not too mention the gay yellow visor.....

  19. I was watching on and off for the second period and the first hakf of the third (24 was on) but Dandenault was playing great from what I saw. There was one shift early in the game where he kept the puck in the attacking zone with the czecho line (Bulis, Zednik, Plekanec) for a long time. He's also been getting some hard slapshots on goal recently. I think that since the break he's been playing his best hockey of the season (not that he's a star or anything).

I agree with BTH. I've liked the way Dandy's been keeping the puck in too. Except for one incredible detroit season Dandy's stats show he's being just as strong as he usually is.

Is there something I'm missing? Is he great come play-off time? Why would Gainey consider him worthy of his contract. I'm hoping we have yet to see it. But what is "IT"

..............can someone answer that. It's not his flexibility because we haven't really used him anywhere but defense pretty much all year

  20. Sorry, but I don't like any of the names being thrown around in the latest speculation on Spectors Site.

Zed or Kotz or Latendresse....for weinrich........obviously a joke, can you believe this bulls#@#$t

    SPECTOR'S MAILBAG.

Thanks to "stasny" for the following Canadiens rumour: "Ron Fournier, former NHL referee and popular radio host in Montreal, said on his Monday night show he was informed that the Habs are currently negotiating with a team about a certain guy. Fournier said he couldn't tell the guy's name on the air but gave a lot of hints for us to guess:

He knows for sure that the Habs are discussing with a team about aquiring a solid, stay-at-home defenseman, that could become number 5 or 6 in Montreal. The guy is said to be a veteran close to retirement, probably a rental player. He spent some time on the PP this season although he wouldn't on Mtl lineup. He apparently had some important responsibilities in his career and, according to Fournier, he would love to end the season in Mtl and would fit right away with the team. My guess is the guy he's talking about is former Habs D-man Eric Weinrich.

In return, the other team would ask one of the following: A veteran offensive winger that could play on the second line (probably Richard Zednik) or a Hamilton Bulldogs forward said to be a fast skater that is a good two-way player.

Fournier said Montreal felt the asking price is a little too high but that negociations between the two teams are still active.

Let me add this on what I sent earlier about the Habs trying to get a

defenseman. It has been confirmed on the air with Fournier on CKAC radio this afternoon. Blues offer Eric Weinrich for either Richard Zednik or prospect Andrei Kostitsyn. Negociations are still active.

I cannot believe the Habs would give up one of their very few prospects.

Zednik is on his way out of Montreal and has started to play decent hockey since the last two or three games, now that he is playing on the third line.

"Alex" also has information on this: "My name is Alex, I'm from Quebec and I was watching to the news at TQS, it was the sports chronic by Michel Villeneuve. He said that an imminent trade including Richard Zednik and the St.Louis Blues defenceman Eric Weinrich (who was once a Habs.) Michel Villeneuve also said that St.Louis request for Weinrich was either Zednik and a young Quebecer prospect that played quite well in pre-season (he didn't mentionned any names but it's obvliously Guillaume Latendresse).
