  1. I don't think that fans or the media would accept a tear it down to the studs rebuild.  With all the parity in the league today there is always going to be the notion that the team has a shot.  The Kings won their first cup as one of the last seeds in the west.  I don't thnk anybody expected Nashville to make the final this past year.  There have been so many surprises year after year, that it gives hope to fans/media. For that reason I don't see a rebuild happening anytime soon.  Habs will do what they always do. Re-tool on the fly.  I personally would like to see a rebuild at some point soon, but it's just not going to happen.  Habs will continue spinning their wheels for another decade or so is my guess.  IMO this team doesn't build to win, it builds not to lose.

Dallas traded Patrick Eaves to Anaheim for a conditional 2017 2nd round pick

Red Wings traded Jurco to Chicago for a 3rd round pick

Patrick Berglund re-signs in St Louis for 5 years, $19.25 million. So $3 850 000 per year, a $150 000 per year raise on his last contract.

Wow, rentals look to be expensive this year.  I know this year's draft isn't highly regarded, but that still seems pricey for those guys.  Good luck acquiring Duchene or someone else of that caliber if that's the price for rentals.

I don't think there is enough time between now and the trade deadline to figure out what this team is. We might have to admit that selling may be in our best option. We are quickly getting into that area, whether we choose to believe it or not. Please show up for the next couple of games. Go Habs Go

I somewhat agree, but Bergevin isn't going to be a seller.  I'd like to see him get rid of some dead weight on this team and add long term fixes for ongoing problems.  I doubt that happens.  He will likely trade for some rentals and hope for the best.

  4. Saw the second and third period of the Spits game last night.  Sergachev coughed up the puck in an ugly way a few times in his own zone.  I was going to say he was a give away machine, but it's not like he was coughing it up every time he touched it.  He looked like he was giving one of his lack luster performance on d last night.  Offensively he looked pretty dangerous from what I seen.  He picked his spot from the high slot on nice wrister short handed.  Had few nice rushes and moved the puck well on the PP and 5 vs 5.

Addison was flying out there.  He was all over the place creating chances and being a royal pain for Oshawa.  I missed his first goal, but from the replay it looked nice.  Second goal was nice shot that hit something (or someone) on the way in.  Didn't catch his assist at all.  I'm liking Addison's energy every game.  Hopefully he gets a contract to show what he can do in the AHL next season.

  5. Checked his scouting report on thehockeynews.com.  According to that report his strength is moving the puck and providing some offense.  His weakness is his lack of size and he is prone to mistakes with and without the puck.  It's an interesting depth move that didn't cost much.

  6. I think prices are going to remain high this year.  Too many buyers and not enough sellers.  On top of that the rental market isn't that deep.  Hanzal is arguably the best rental center right now.  It's like a couple years back when Vermette was the hot commodity at the deadline.  The looming expansion draft also throws a wrench into team's plans.  If you're bringing in a player that you have to protect, you likely have to move a player that needs protection otherwise you risk losing a good player to Vegas along with whatever assets were dealt in the trade.  This makes rentals more attractive and likely ups their value.

So Larsson gets you Hall, but that is the price for Nuge? Somehow I doubt that

Chiarrelli wanted Larsson and Hall was the price he had to pay to get it.  It would be the Habs that want RNH so they're the ones that are going to have to pay to get him IMO.  The Oilers aren't shopping him that I'm aware of.  They are willing to trade him if the deal is right (meaning the Oilers are getting what they want).  I'm sure that there are compromises that can be made on both sides to get a deal done, but my guess is that if they asked for a reasonable return that a deal would have already been done.

  8. I'm pretty sure it would take quite a bit to get RNH out of Edmonton.  So as far as value goes Gallagher + Beaulieu or Juulsen + a draft pick (likely a first or maybe a second) is the value I think Edmonton is expecting.  I don't think RNH is on the block despite media speculation.  We've heard his name in specific rumors involving specific players.  Like when the Oilers were interested in Hamonic for example.  I don't Chiarrelli is looking to move him for just anything.  He's looking for something specific for RNH, and that something might not be anything the Habs have to offer.

In regards to Duchene, I think Sakic is only going to move him in a "knock my socks off" kind of deal.  It would be like the Habs trading Galchenyuk.  Bergevin doesn't want to, so fair value isn't going to pry him out of Montreal.  Guys like Duchene, RNH, or even Tavares aren't really on the trade block (as of yet).  It would have to be an offer they simply can't refuse.  So ridiculous overpayment.

  9. I'm glad that I'm not the only one seeing the problem with the development system in Montreal.  It's one thing to fail to get a 7th round pick or even some other late round project or longshot to the NHL, but it becomes an issue when your blue chip prospects aren't making it.

  10. I'm with Meller93 on the prospect of bringing in RNH.  I've been debating if the Oilers would want Plekanec for a while now.  They look like they might make the playoffs this year and will likely need cap space before RNH's contract expires.  Plekanec could bring veteran leadership and a solid two-way game (the offense seems to be MIA right now though) to a young Oilers team.  Plus he's only signed for one more year.  From everything I've seen and read regarding RNH, he seems like a capable two-way center.  Maybe not as good defensively as Plekanec, but still good enough not to hurt your team.  Obviously Habs would have to put together a package to get him as Plekanec wouldn't be enough IMO.

As for Hanzal, I think the asking price is too high right now.  If they're asking for anything more than what they got for Vermette, then I wouldn't do it.  Rumors I've been reading about are saying that the asking price a young NHL established center.  They don't have much interest in picks or prospects yet.  Maybe closer to the deadline if they're not close to signing him that will change.

Aside from exploring the trade route, I would look at moving Byron to the middle.  He was drafted as a center and I'm sure he could play there again for the short term.  Moving Danault and Mitchell up in the lineup works too.

  11. Habs have drafted 23 centers in the last decade.  Of that number only 5 came in the first two rounds of the draft.  3 in the first round : McCarron (who was actually drafted as a winger), Galchenyuk (Habs current 1st line center), and Leblanc (bust).  Ben Maxwell (bust) and Jacob de la Rose (maybe a 4th liner) were 2nd rounders.  Aside from those 5 only 2 have played in the NHL.  Ryan White played over 200 NHL games and Gabriel Dumont played less than 100 NHL games.  Joonas Nattinen was a bust, but after him there were a lot of longshots or "projects" drafted that didn't pan out.  Habs still have Bitten, Pezzetta (longshot/project), Vejdemo (longshot/project), Bradley (longshot), Audette, Evans, Crisp (longshot/project), Gregoire (longshot/project), and MacMillan (longshot/project) in the system.

  12. I've seen about a dozen Spits games this year so far.  Addison has been the most consistent forward on the Spits from shift to shift in those games IMO (Vilardi is up there with him too).  His offensive ability looks very average, but he plays an aggressive, give it all you've got style every shift it seems.  I've been impressed with how hard he works out there, and his aggressiveness and hustle have really created numerous chances and goals that don't show up in his stats line.   His speed is also very noticeable out there.  I wasn't a big fan of his when he was drafted, but he' starting to grow on me.  Having said that, he still needs a lot of work to get to the NHL.  If he continues to play well and can show a little more versatility (mostly positional versatility) I wouldn't mind seeing the Habs sign him to an ELC.  I'm curious to see how effective he can be at the next level.  Even if he never plays in the NHL, he might be a good influence on some of the young players on the farm as he gets older.  Kind of the same way Dumont was good for the minor team.

  13. A lot.  It would have to be a huge overpayment to land him.  Add Sergachev plus some 1st rounders (notice 1st rounders is plural) and possibly more assets.  That would be my guess.

Last I heard the Islanders are looking for a winger to play with Tavares, so I doubt they're looking to trade him.  Most of the "rumors" surrounding Tavares sounds more like media speculation IMO.  If Snow trades Tavares it will signify yet another rebuild for the Islanders.  I doesn't sound like that's what the Isles want to do.  Sounds more like they want to compete (which is why they want a winger that can play with Tavares).

  14. I watched the 3rd period of the Windsor - Ottawa game last night and noticed that Sergachev seemed to playing right defense.  Not just for a couple shifts, but for the whole 3rd. Anybody know how long have the Spits been playing him on the right side?  I didn't really notice before in the few games I seen him play since his return, but I've only caught bits and pieces of the past 4 or 5 games.  I have to say I thought he looked pretty good and more involved than some of the earlier games I've seen him in.

  15. I've always seen his ceiling as a second pair guy (I was never really impressed with his offensive numbers at any level), but for whatever reason he doesn't seem to be progressing.   If he could improve defensively I think he could still be second pair material.  How to get him to improve?  I have no idea.

  16. Offensive consistency is a problem with McCarron IMO.  Most young players go through it and the good ones tend to be able to grow out of it.

There maybe no correlation here, but I found this interesting.  Two years ago we say a highly touted rookie pro prospect in Jacob de la Rose get called up late in the season and have an extended stay in the NHL.  He was playing well (not great) in the AHL.  Everyone thought he was a lock for the team the next year, but he was sent to the minors where he seems to be struggling.  Now we look at McCarron who was also doing well in the AHL last year and was also a highly touted rookie pro prospect last season.  Again he seems to be struggling in the AHL this year.  Finally a few years back there was Louis Leblanc as well that looked to have a promising rookie pro season followed by an extended NHL stay, only to get banished to the minors the following year and struggle (and never recover).  It begs the question; Are these youngsters being rushed?  Maybe I'm reaching for an excuse a little too much, but I find it interesting to see the similarities with the situations.
