Defensemen Jimmy Schuldt, Jordan Gross, Alec Rauhauser are a few other NCAA candidates to consider as well IMO. Olivier Galipeau would be interesting as well in the Q.

It's too bad there isn't a way to sign drafted senior NCAA players early without them losing their scholarships and playing eligibility.
-
The other problem is cap implications if the plan is to sign Tavares. Dahlin's contract would be capped for 3 years. There's also longer team control than OEL (1 year before UFA), Karlsson (1 year before UFA), and Barrie (3 years before UFA). I realize that they can be resigned, but will they want to stay in Montreal and for how much?

A couple of major needs could potential be filled this offseason with a little luck. If John Tavares decides to go to free agency there's always a chance that the Habs can land him. Which fills the most obvious need of a #1 center. The Habs will also have a chance at winning the draft lottery, which could bring in Rasmus Dahlin. Of course his fills another major hole as the top pair LD. If both of these miraculous things were to happen, there would have to be some trades made to shed some short and long term salary as well.
Five of six top forwards for next year would be John Tavares, Max Pacioretty (at least for one season), Alex Galchenyuk, Jonathan Drouin, and Brendan Gallagher. Depending on how far along we think Scherbak is or could be by next season, he could be added to that group. The top 4 defense would also see nice change with Weber and Dahlin as legit 1st pair guys, and Petry and Mete as a nice 2nd pair.
This is how I would line them up. If you think about it though, this would allow a 3rd line with any combination of Danault, Shaw, Byron, Lehkonen, Hudon. If that's not scoring depth, than I don't know what is (even if a couple of guys from that group are dealt). I'm sure the Habs have a different plan. I doubt they play Galchenyuk at center, maybe Drouin in that spot. Also maybe Scherbak isn't even in the top 6, it might be Hudon or Lehkonen or Byron. The defense is a little more straight forward.
Drouin Tavares Gallagher
Pacioretty Galchenyuk Scherbak
Dahlin Weber
Mete Petry
The odds are certainly against one of these things happening let alone both, but there is hope for a quick (2 year?) turn around. Right?

I really didn't think he would get signed considering Bergevin opted not to sign Bradley last year. I agree with Commandant's projection of a 4th liner. Maybe a future replacement for a guy like Deslauriers.
-
Glad to see it happen. I don't see him as a top 6 forward in the NHL, but I like him as a 3rd liner. Maybe a future replacement for Byron or Shaw (down the road a bit of course).

From Friedman:
Basically if Bergevin was trading Pacioretty he wanted prospects, picks, and a top six player to go in the lineup and still perform. I welcome the inevitable conclusion of Pacioretty walking as a free agent next summer because Bergevin couldn't get his retool package.
If Pacioretty doesn't move this summer than I also believe that he will walk next summer for nothing. I have a feeling that the Habs will be holding down a playoff spot at next year's trade deadline or will be battling for a playoff spot. Which means the Habs will be buyers and will not be moving out any expiring contracts.
-
I'm guessing Rychel will be the 4th. I'm assuming they will want to get a look at him to figure out what they have and if he should be qualified or not.
-
Rumors that I've heard is that Bergevin wants an NHL ready player for Pacioretty (and that he's asking too much). So I would agree that he's planning a retool not a rebuild. I'm hoping that if Bergevin moves Pacioretty for NHL ready player that he is young enough to be under team control for many years. Either already signed to an 8 year deal or will become an RFA when his contract expires.

Bruins also got rid of Beleskey in that deal. Probably why they gave up so much. They are still retaining some of Beleskey's contract.

I loved Vilardi in Windsor, but his skating really concerns me. I haven't seen him much this year, I wonder if it has improved at all?
-
This is a good return for Plekanec. Valiev had a good draft +1 year. His development has certainly slowed, but I like him as a prospect. Rychel is depth. At this point he is what he is. I kind of wish the 2nd rounder would've been next years draft, but this year's is good too. Maybe the Habs package a couple 2nds to get a late first.

He has been waived a couple of times already but he has played a lot better with the Habs than he did in his first two stops. If a team is looking for a depth goalie, Niemi may actually be the best one available (which still doesn't say a whole lot). I don't think he'd be a throw-in on a bigger deal - if he goes, it'd be for a late-round pick; those types of players don't typically get included in larger-scale deals.
I'd target the Kings. Niemi has more experience than Wedgewood and Campbell.

In this scenario we are Vegas, not Pittsburgh.
That's what I thought it sounded like when I first read it.

Does this mean that it's a 3 way trade that the Habs will help facilitate (kind of like Vegas did with Brassard) or that the Habs have thrown their hat in the Karlsson sweepstakes?

Cap space would be scarce after a Tavares signing. We would be putting all our eggs in Tavares' basket. If he is not enough to win a Cup on his own, I doubt we have enough cap space to bring in what we need to win one. Having said that, it would sure be nice to have him anyway if we could find a way to make the cap work.

I think you might be right about that. Niemi has played very well in some of his losses.only had a couple bad games.
Hopefully it creates some kind of market for him. Although I don't see too many teams really needing or wanting him. Most playoff teams seem to have a pretty good duo.
-
I don't think the Habs will win a Stanley Cup next year or the year after. I doubt Plekanec is extended beyond two years. So I would trade him for whatever I can get and move on. If he wants to come back, he's welcome to at a much reduced cap hit.
-
Not bad. Recoup an asset for a guy that might not resign. I figured Jerabek's value would be somewhere in the mid-round pick range. Hopefully this is only the start. I'd like to see more UFAs dealt for picks.
-
Watching L.A. vs Buffalo. Not sure who to root for. Kings need wins to make the playoffs so Habs can get their 4th rounder back. Buffalo needs wins so Habs can catch them and get better odds in the lottery. Hoping for a 3 point game here, but it's not looking good. 4-0 L.A. after 2 periods.

Weber to EDM for their 1st Rd 2018 pick.
I could see Edmonton being interested in Weber, but I think there would have to be more pieces moving in this deal. Oilers can't absorb Weber's cap hit without sending a fairly big contract back..
-
If the Habs decide to trade Weber at some point, Vegas would make sense as one of many potential destinations. Since Weber doesn't have a NTC or a NMC, Habs could move him anywhere they please if they decide to deal him. I don't think the Habs are looking to deal Weber though. The only way he gets moved is if a team gives Bergevin an offer he can't refuse.

Has our window really closed up??? If so it shouldn't be a retool it should be a full rebuild. If its a retool we don't trade a guy like Pacioretty, if its a rebuild we trade Pacioretty, Weber , price , Gallagher, petry, galchenyuk. We do a full rebuild, if its a retool we keep this guys just trade our ufa's and use the cap space and picks to retool. But that all depends on how much we think our window is closed.
I was thinking along these lines as well. There is a way to trade Pacioretty and get a good return that helps in the near future without going through a full "tear it down and start over" rebuild. The Leafs didn't trade every asset when they committed to their rebuild plan. They still have Bozak, van Riemsdyk, Lupul (although he's injured), Gardiner, Komarov, and probably more that I can't remember now. These were all players that were expected or rumored to be moved in a fire sale. The Leafs are already holding down a playoff spot for the second year in a row. They have a ways to go before they really contend for a Cup, but they're on the right track. It just goes to show that a rebuild doesn't have to be a long painful experience. Sometimes you can turn things around within a few years if you make the right moves and commit to it. It's about doing it right from here on out by properly developing youngsters and proper asset management.

I personally thought Sakic was ridiculous for holding out and asking so much for Duschene.
Look who had the last laugh. Sakic got a boatload in return and by far was the winner and his team is looking a lot better now than before!
I'm glad MB is asking a lot. He should. Big, fast, skilled perennial 30 goal scorers should command a really good return.
Agreed. Trying to trade players is like trying to sell your car. You know people are going to low ball you so ask for more (within reason as to not scare away potential buyers) than you really want and hope you end up with exactly what you wanted when negotiations are over.

I agree. Bergevin seems to be looking to the present as opposed to the future. I doubt any of the players chosen with those 2nds will end up helping the team next year or even the year after. I could see him dealing all 4 of them for immediate short term help. Personally I would keep all our picks and try to get more. It's time to restock the cupboards. That's just me though.
