success with two first rounders ?

the montreal canadiens are given a great opportunity of making a huge move foward with two first rounder this year.

is it a token of success ?? the past draft have shown that it's not as relevant as one could imagine.

I've cracked down the first round of each year from 1990 to today to see which teams had success and who failed miserably*couch*islanders*cough.

2006: too early to tell

2004: rangers: montoya and korpikoski...a bit too early to tell.

washington: ovechkin, mike green and jeff schulz. all played in the NHL this year.

edmonton : dubnyk and schremp: development stalled with no AHL team.

2003:

florida: horton and stewart: could take a few more year before being bona fide duo.

LA: dustin bron, jeff tambellini, brian boyle: and 2nd liner, one prospect and one islander

philadelphia. carter and richards: already core players.

anaheim: Getzlaf and Perry: 'nuff said

2002 washington: semin, eminger, gordon. 3 solid NHLers

atalanta: lehtonen and slater

2001: komi and perehogin...fair draft. no superstar but a solid D.

la streckel and karlsonn(????)

fla: weiss krajicek: ok, I guess

2000: islanders: dipietro and torres. sure nhlers but no stars yet.

mtl: hainsey and hossa: two NHLers in a weak year

boston and chicago: total failure

99:

vancouver: SEDINS...great picks

islanders: connoly, pyatt, mezei, kudroc.

rangers Lundmark and brendl

98

colorado: tanguay, skoula, regehr and parker....all still playing in the league.

nj gomez and van ryn

97

boston: thornton and samsonov

islanders: luongo and brewer.

san jose: marleau and hannan

chicago: ty jones and dan cleary...missed the boat.

94: quebec: kealty and belak

93 quebec: thubault and deadmarsh at least they did good on that one

washington: jason allison and bredan witt.

92 to 90...not much

conclusion : while some teams have had many 1st rounders, very few of them have made an impact with their respective teams.

of course there's always a possibiliy of trading a pick for an NHL player à la minnesota last year but that wasn't the point of this topic.
