No Salary Arbitration for Koivu

Two sides confident. Habs' schedule looks less daunting this year

The good news for the Canadiens is that that the deadline for seeking arbitration came and went at midnight Tuesday and Saku Koivu has decided not to file for arbitration.

While Koivu didn't accept the Habs' qualifying offer of $3.3 million U.S., the decision not to seek arbitration is an indication that preliminary talks between the Canadiens and agent Don Baizley have gone well and the two sides are confident they can reach an agreement.

Koivu is due for a raise from the $3.3 million he has earned in each of the past three seasons after returning from a life-threatening bout with abdominal cancer and leading the Canadiens in scoring with 21 goals and 71 points.

Tough guy forward Gordie Dwyer also declined to seek arbitration, while centre Mike Ribeiro and defenceman Andrei Markov are not eligible.

The Canadiens also received some good news from the schedule-maker as the National Hockey League released its 2003-04 schedule.

By NHL standards, it's not an arduous schedule. The team does have 12 sets of back-to-back games - two fewer than last season - and 10 of them involve a combination of a home game and a road game.

But there are only two road trips that involve more than three games and the traditional post-Christmas road swing to western Canada is now scheduled for November and will include the Nov. 22 outdoor game against the Edmonton Oilers at Commonwealth Stadium.

That trip will begin Nov. 15 in Ottawa and continue Nov. 18 in Vancouver and Nov. 20 in Calgary before wrapping up in Edmonton.

The Nov. 22 date has some significance because it was on that date in 1917 that the NHL was founded in Montreal with the Canadiens as a charter member, although the formation of the league wasn't announced until four days later.

The Canadiens also have a four-game swing through the U.S. West Coast in March, beginning in San Jose on March 3 and continuing through Phoenix on March 5, Los Angeles March 6 and Anaheim March 8.

The only other trips outside the Eastern time zone are a Dec. 31 visit to Dallas and a Jan. 29 game in Minnesota. The Dallas visit follows games Dec. 27 in Carolina and Dec. 29 in Atlanta.

Weeknight games will continue to start at 7:30, while weekend games start at 7 p.m. There will be three 2 p.m. matinées, Jan. 3 vs. Atlanta and the traditional Super Bowl weekend games against Boston on Jan. 31 and Chicago on Feb. 1. The Jan. 4 game against Washington begins at 5 p.m.

The Habs will once again participate in the Hockey Day in Canada tripleheader, playing in Toronto on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. Calgary is in Ottawa for the early game that day, while the late game is Vancouver at Edmonton.

The Canadiens play each NHL team at least once, but won't visit Colorado, Columbus, Chicago, Detroit, Nashville or St. Louis. Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, Dallas, Minnesota and Phoenix won't be seen in Montreal during the regular season.

Minnesota will be at the Bell Centre as part of a busy nine-game exhibition schedule. The Habs will play five games at the Bell Centre with a sixth "home" game against the Bruins scheduled for Manchester, N.H.

Our last 10 games are pretty tough... so if we're in a tight race for 8th down the stretch it's gonna be tough.

Leafs

Avalanche

Devils

Devils

Senators

Flyers

... the other 4 are ok.

Then again, in the last few years we never seem able to cash in against the "weaker" teams... so might as well play the top teams when it counts the most.

If anything it'll get us battle tested for the playoffs, if we're to make the playoffs obviously :)
