You must be pulling your hair out with EdmontonI find it hard to believe that any team would touch Babcock with a 10 foot pole but I guess Stan Bowman believes in redemption. I guess I find it more amusing than anything. Just glad that Hughes is our GM.

Worth ... 7 x $8.5-9.5M
Likely to get: 7 x $10-11M
Of course HuGo can sell playing with his brother and "if you can't beat'em, join'em" so for the Habs 7 x $7.8625M ... 😉 😜
BTW ... he played with Larkin on the U.S. National Development Team, so *** IF *** HuGo could pull off that trade it might be a selling point come July 1st ... it would mean some cap juggling beyond moving Gallagher but (to quote Lotto 6/49) Just Imagine
I think $10M-11M is pretty close. Would he improve the Habs? Yes, of course. Would I be interested in spending 10M-11M/year for 7 years for a 30 year old winger? No I bet he resigns with Buffalo so it won't matter anyway.

I'm glad it didn't go through. I like Knies, but I don't want to be giving up assets and cap space until we address the 2C position. 2 first rounders and one our two top prospects is a big price to pay for Knies.
The 2c position is a bigger priority for sure but if you have the opportunity to add a beast of a power forward who is still young then you have to look seriously at it. I would have liked to see that deal go through.

I agree the deal is dead now that Treliving is gone ... but does HuGo being willing to give up one of their TOP prospects and significant draft capital indicate that they were convinced Hage is the 2C of the future ... does his staying in school change that or would he only be traded if it was in a deal for a long-term solution at 2C
I had similar thoughts when reading the Knies proposal. Maybe Hage is the 2C of the future and if you put him between Demidov and Slaf/or Knies then perhaps his chances of developing improve substantially.

Darren Dreger is reporting the Habs and Leafs had a deal but were 1 minute late at the trade deadline.
The deal is now dead due to the Leafs firing Treliving.
The deal was Knies for Zharovsky, 2026 1st, 2027 1st, and another prospect (not Hage or Reinbacher)
Interesting. I didn't know if the Knies rumours were just speculation or if there was some substance to it which appears is the case. Knies would certainly give the top 6 a big boost. Can't have too many big, physical, talented wingers in the playoffs plus his age would fit in well with the core. Obviously Treliving was looking at rebuilding if he was ready to accept this trade. I would do this trade for sure.

I enjoyed the debate about Gallagher. I sincerely hope I am wrong as getting out of that contract without having to give up anything would be a huge plus and give them more flexibility next year.

Unless they aren’t planning to spend to the cap and are looking for leadership in the room. It would be worse, if actual $ were $6.5m
I don't think you need to use up 6.5M in cap space on an aging winger to get leadership. Anyway, we will likely know soon enough.

Don't think anyone expects the Habs could get anything of value back, just that it won't take anything, or at least anything of any significance, for them to move Gallagher ... hence my "future considerations" suggestion.
I would love to be wrong on this but again Gallagher scored 7 goals, is 34 and makes 6.5M/year. I just don't see anybody just taking this on without some sort of compensation as there has to be a better way for a team to use up 6.5M in cap space.

I don't think we'll have to throw anything in for Van. He will be a useful ingredient for a rebuilding team that has a history of severe locker room/work ethic/culture issues, and he will be a popular figure in a local market that desperately wants players they can get behind. The owner probably won't mind paying $4 mil for that, and they'll have no problem getting him under the cap. Future considerations or, like, a 6th rounder would be fine.
I hope you are right. You know the Vancouver market/culture better than I do.

Watching Gally's tears is one of the most touching moments in recent years, though, IMHO. The guy has bled Habs red for 14 years and done the jersey proud.
100%, it will be tough to see him in another uniform, he has given so much! An absolute warrior and class act.

I wouldn't be shocked if it were just future considerations (i.e., a steak dinner at the next GM's meetings)
He had 7 goals and 23 points in 77 games and is making 6.5 million. We aren't getting anything back. Either we take on some of that salary or throw in a sweetener.

Or… Montembault as the centrepiece in a McDavid trade (in my dreams)
Sounds good to me. Maybe they will take Gallagher too? Might also have to throw in a 2nd round pick.

He wasn't a playoff performer before this season (2 goals in 32 games), and not being psychic (sadly) I can't apologize for not foreseeing this run ... based on his performance since the discussion in January, I would say he has a spot next season ... ideally on the third line IMO but if HuGo fail to improve the Top 6 they may need him there
Newhook is a player that teases you. On some nights he is extremely impressive with his tremendous speed. Other nights not so much. He got off to a great start this year then unfortunately got hurt. Including playoffs this year he got 20 goals in 61 games, his best output so far. Has he turned a corner? I don't know but I hope so. The potential is certainly there to be a top 6 forward.

I really like Guhle but he has been injury prone and is an obvious trade chip to help get that 2C. As mentioned we also have Reinbacher and Engstrom coming up plus it will be interesting to see how Pickford develops. In my opinion defense is the least area of concern.

The problem in this series was NOT the lack of physical D. The guys we rely on to move the puck and start the break out werent getting that done. There may be reasone (dobson for sure is injured and i wont be surprised if he wasnt the only one).
In fact the lack of another wasnt a problem at any point in the playoffs.
So im fine with bringing in Reinbacher next year as our only addition on D
Ive already said getting a C should be priority but will be difficult and may need to wait for an in season trade.
With all that in mind, im hoping to add a winger. Ideally a goal scorer who can finish Demidov's passes but a second option is someone to play with 13 and 14 so Slaf can play with Demidov.
Agreed, in my opinion by far the biggest priority is a #2 center, someone who can work magic with Demidov. They aren't easy to find.

I think when we are a complete team, Matheson is a bottom pairing LD. But we have a bottom pairing that plays at least 15-16 min, unless e have a lot of PP.
They are not paying Matheson to be a bottom pairing LD. It would be awesome if the top 4 was so good that Matheson was relegated to the bottom pair but I don't see any team paying 6 million/year in this salary cap world for a bottom pairing D. I agree that the Habs don't have a ton of physicality in the top 4 but they do have great mobility perhaps as mobile as any top 4 in the NHL.

Guhle is the only physical Dman we have. That’s why I don’t see how we could move him.
Hutson our best dman is in particular could benefit from a skilled by physical RHD partner.Dobson and Matheson have size, but aren’t net clearers. Reinbacher seems similar.
Carrière is undersized. Xhejac and Struble can play similar, but are depth dmen.
Then who do you replace in the top 4 of Guhle, Hutson, Matheson and Dobson?

With Hage, Zharovsky, Pickford, and Reinbacher in the system as the known potential impact prospects, should the team wait on the 2C and instead focus on a physical, mobile defenseman for next season? Or would they be equal value?
They need a 2C, they have plenty of mobility on the blueline especially with Reinbacher and Engstrom coming up.

There are 32 teams in the league and this team is playing a better, more experienced team who had two weeks rest while the Habs went through two gruelling series, and likely is far healthier.
There doesnt always have to be a scape goat.
The Habs dont have some god given right to win every night.
Sometimes you get beaten by a better team and you have to go into the offseason looking to fill the holes on the roster.
This isnt anyone's fault. Its a step in the journey
Excellent post. A step in the journey for a young team. They ran out of gas. It's been frustrating but I am NOT going to dump on them tonight. The young Habs provided me with a lot of excitement and hope this year. I look forward to the future.

What's surprising is how Carolina is dominating while Sebastien Aho has done nothing. I figured they would need him but apparently not.

Habs on pace for 20+ shots tonight, something to build on for next year.

Call me crazy but i think the guy who is going to move for the number 2 C if done in the summer and not at the deadline, is Guhle.
And that wont be the only piece.
I think theyd rather have a righty D and once that Righty D is acquired, Guhle becomes a third pair guy. And there might be more value in moving him than keeping him on the third pair.
I don't think that's crazy at all especially if Reinbacher is ready to go. Guhle is making too much to be a 3rd pairing guy. Where does Engstrom fit in? Guhle might be a great trade chip.

Nobody will touch him at 9.25M/year unless there is significant retention or a big sweetener added. A useful defensemen in the right situation at the right price. He has become a whipping boy in Edmonton and I don't blame him for wanting a change of scenery.
