The one super positive thing was that the great Austin Mathews and his first line could not handle the Suzuki line.

Suzuki line crushed the leafs super line. Habs have a legitimate first line that competes with the best players out there.

Now all the Habs need are three more great lines…and I think Dach might help us in that pursuit

Agreed, the Suzuki line is really looking like a legitimate 1st line and has been for a while.

The Habs have played all the good teams tough (ie. Florida, Tampa, Carolina, Toronto) which is a good sign,

I think we all agree that Dach is such a key. If I have one wish for next year it's that Dach can stay healthy so we can at least find out what we have.

A 2nd wish for next year would be for Florida to tank but that is likely wishful thinking as they have a very strong team.

Agreed ... the contract is only "bad" in retrospect because Montembeault emerged as an NHL goalie, otherwise not re-signing Allen would have been a disaster ...

Exactly, at the time Price was headed to LTIR and Monty was coming off a pretty mediocre first year with the Habs. Hughes doesn't have a crystal ball, so a 2 year contract wasn't a bad thing.  It's these 5 and 6 year contracts that can really come back to bite you (ie Gallagher) if you make a mistake.

Not impressed when looking at when he was signed, for how much  and how long, to now moving him with retention for a nothing pick.

Feels like this type of trade could have been done a month or two ago, if not more.

Tells me Habs mgmt caved, took whatever they could and did not stick to their guns as is often reported.

When Allen was signed to an extension there was a lot of uncertainty in the Habs goaltending situation and the extension was looked upon favourably by most. I think Hughes did the best he could as far as a return goes. The space used up by the cap retention is not needed badly next year and was the only way to get any sort of return.

Prediction: Hanifin will be signed the other 3 will walk.  Alec Martinez will be traded.

Certainly Stephenson is expendable with Hertl on board, Mantha likely just a rental.

Before adding Hertl, Vegas only have 15 players from their NHL roster signed for next season and have $15.7M in cap space ... Hertl will eat up $6.75412M of that but also means they only have 6-7 spots to fill ... expect it means Marchessault isn't re-signed.

Machessault is a UFA as well as Hannifin, Mantha and Stephenson. Somebody not going to get resigned.

Hertl is out long-term as well, probably not back until the playoffs.  That's probably how they're making it work this year.

Seems like Vegas is not too worried about next year LOL  Have to sign Hannifin, Hertl at 8.1M.   They are going for it this year.

I just read that report about this season and next before I posted 💩

Much tougher to play half the games next season only - I’m not so confident anymore

It does make sense it would be for next season only, the key is Allen staying healthy and of course playing well.

I'm surprised that we could actually move him, good job Kent.

They had almost zero chance to move him without retention or taking back a bad contract. I think Hughes did the best he could and it was a good decision.

  9. This is absolutely fine, clears up the goaltending spot, a decent return. Using up the last retention spot means they are likely done with any big trades, Savard is almost certainly not going anywhere.  I wish Jake Allen the best, a class act.

I'm a lover not a hater... Go Toffoli, Go! Go, Monahan, Go!

    😍

I am a lover too, I love the Habs first and foremost.  I would much rather pick 24th than 30th.

Don't have a lot of sympathy ... it is exactly the situation he should have known he was getting into last summer, and one on which he doubled down by trading for Karlsson ... after this season, they have 3-yrs of EK, 4-yrs of Letang, 2-yrs of Malkin and pending 2025 UFA Crosby ... they will have almost $12M in cap space this summer but not certain that can be used to get one of the oldest teams in the league back to the playoffs.

Agree, he knew it would be tough. I expect the Penguins to be drafting high in a couple years. The future there is not bright.

  12. I expect something from Tampa tomorrow, the Islanders have almost caught them for the last wild card spot and they have a couple games in hand. Missing the playoffs is not an option as they wouldn't even benefit from having a decent 1st round pick as they have given them up for the next couple years.  But they also don't have much in the way of draft capital to give up for anything. They are in a tough spot.

  13. That's a great pick up for Carolina, not an expert on the prospects given up but I don't think any of them appear to be in their top 5 prospects. And it's only a 1st round pick if they get to the final (31 or 32). I get that Pittsburgh has to restock their farm system otherwise they will be brutal in a few years when their core ages out. I wonder how their veterans feel about this trade? Dubas is in a tough spot.

I am sure there has always been interest, just don't think teams are willing to give a 1st for him. I wonder if Pittsburgh just gave up today knowing they were losing Guentzel.

That's not always the case; not every team goes to the point of scratching players for trade-related reasons.  It just means nothing is imminent or done.  (That said, I'm not expecting much from Montreal tomorrow.)  Also, if anyone is wondering, Allen is the healthy scratch in the goalie rotation tonight.

Carolina, meanwhile, is scratching Michael Bunting who appears to be going to Pittsburgh in a Jake Guentzel trade.

Agree, not a guarantee of no trades but less likely.

Yes, as was noted in the article.  Obviously, it would be different now.   I was still hoping as of a few weeks ago to get the full write-ups done like normal but realized it wasn't going to happen.  So rather than sit on them any longer, I figured I'd get them up before the deadline.  I'm going to have to figure out a different way to do these moving forward.

I had hopes that Kidney would be able to contribute fairly quickly this season which factored into that rating.  I've been higher on Struble than other sites in the past but since he was coming off a tough senior year, I didn't see cause to move him up but didn't want to drop him either which is how he wound up staying where he was.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't realize it was from before the season started. Certainly Struble would be higher today.
