I am not one of those MB bashers and in fact I don’t spend much of my energy thinking about him. With that being said, what we do know is that the equivalent of what Radulov signed for in Dallas would have costed the Habs 8.1 million. We also know that what the Habs offered was the same offer as Dallas. I can personally feel confident when I come to the conclusion that Radulov would have likely signed with the Habs for 8.1 million. I am also aware that not many fans on this board would have wanted to sign him for 8.1 million. The question for me is whether or not he would have signed for 7-7.5 million and even if the answer would be no, we then come to the conclusion that signing one of the best Russian forwards to ever play the game, a season after he was our best player in the playoffs, was not worth signing because we would be ripped off by $500k. Considering the organization failed to use their cap space for years to come afterward, it becomes hard for me to find a reason we should be worried about his salary, and consequently his cap hit.

That's a fair comment. I would have been a little skeptical giving him a long term contract at 8.1 million after 1 good season to a guy who was 31 at the time. No question about his talent.   I was probably hoping (and likely so was MB) that he would give Montreal a little hometown discount for taking a chance on him but that obviously was not the case. If Dallas doesn't score with 12 seconds left against Calgary in game 4 then we are probably not having this discussion, again.

    The leafs are strapped....

    RW Marner (10.5  million)

    For

    C/W Domi RFA

    RD Juulsen

    2020 2nd round

    2021 1st round

    ???

Yes, the Leafs are strapped and after making that trade the Habs would be strapped.  I love Marner but is he a fit at 10.89M a year?

  3. I was also disappointed we didn't resign Radulov  however we will likely never know what the cost/term was to keep him. A lot of people crucified MB for not resigning him but few gave him credit for taking the chance to bring him back when nobody else would take a chance on him.

Unless we took a lot more cap space than Neal back, I don’t think they could afford Price.  I also don’t think there is really too many roster players I’d want that they given their contract position that they may want to  move (Larsson, potentially Nurse, nugent hopkins).  I’d be much more interested in their prospects, unless Draisaitl suddenly became available.

i don’t think we get full value for Price given his contract  and probably can get more value for Gallagher.  We also don’t have to worry about having the player waiving a NTC with Gallagher.

I think there is zero chance that Draisatl (league scoring champion and possible MVP) becomes available,  his contract at 8.5 mil for the next 5 years is also pretty good value right now.  I think Nurse would be a great fit but the Oilers are unlikely to move him.  Agree that you would get maximum value for Gallagher right now, love the guy but his body will wear down with the style he plays.

I think Lekhs might be a risk of being dumped, he's decent but he has shown that he isnt capable of scoring 20g/yr so there is a strong likelihood that another player could do just as good if not better so why keep him.

In my opinion Lekhonen is a keeper. He is almost the perfect 3rd line winger, gives 100%, excellent skater, plays both ends of the ice.  He may only score 13-15 goals/year but for a 3rd line winger that is absolutely fine. There would be a lot of takers if the Habs wanted to get rid of him.

More concerning to me is that is reflective of his playoff history ... his fifth postseason and only once has he performed well

True, 6 goals in 35 playoff games is well below his regular season average. Loved his play for the Habs during the last 2 regular seasons but the playoffs is a different animal.

Tartar had two goals in one game, and no assists ... I agree that Kovalchuk would have not made much difference but overall neither did Tomas really

Tartar had a poor playoff, I don't think anyone would argue that. He was one of a group of players that under performed offensively.

Thompson is a 4th line player that was in our face and up our ass all series long. Would you rather have Hudon or Thompson on your 4th line?

The 4th line wasn't the problem, the Habs lost because they didn't score enough. I like Nate Thompson but he wouldn't haven't been the difference.  They needed some of the their goal scorers to come through, Gallagher, Danault, Byron and Domi had 3 goals between them in 10 games. Not nearly good enough.  i hate being critical of Gallagher, he was playing hurt and there is nobody I respect more on the Habs.

Cant see it making huge difference, trade a 2nd and move up to maybe 13th, but doubt it happens. And trading 2 2nds would be very rare i think.

    So instead of a Connor Zary 57gms 38g 86pts at 16, you maybe get a Jack Quinn 62gm 52g 89pts.

The Habs have 3  2nd round picks and I think at this most point they should be more interested in quality not quantity. They can definitely be used as currency if there is a player they are targeting. Time for MB to get a little creative.

I was pissed at MB for doing nothing last offseason because I said we were one player away from being a playoff team that could win a round or two. I think these playoffs proved that and imagine if Thompson was still our 4th line centre, imagine if we could have replaced a struggling Tatar with Kovalchuck...

Tatar had 2 goals in the playoffs,  Kovalchuk had a grand total of 1 assist. Nate Thompson had 1 goal.  I agree with many of your other points especially regarding Lehkonen, Suzuki and KK.

  11. One thing for sure, there will be less talk of trading for a centre which will be a nice change, Suzuki, KK and Danault is starting to look like a good group. I agree about Petry, that is a big decision. He will be 33 next year, has been a work horse and still has some good years left but his best years are behind him.  Trading him now would likely bring good value but also leaves a hole on the right side and Weber is not getting any younger.

Good to see St. Louis going down as i believe the Habs have their 2nd round pick which should be higher now. Maybe they can package a couple of their 2nd round picks and move up in the draft.

Totally agree that this win does not make us any better and I really wanted that number 1 pick who will be a player whose name starts with “Laf”.

having said that, I have a lot more comfort in seeing we any have a two good young centres that are 1a/1b potential and the fact that it was with quality ice time in key roles and. It just as but players.  They aren’t the truly cant miss generational players you usually get at in the top 3, but they look like guys who can control games.  Having said that, it was a short series in weird year and there were no expectation on the team. So we’ll have to wait until next year to figure what we have.

id like to think that we can go on a 1985 or 2010 type run, but i don’t think we have the D for that - especially if we have to play Tampa. I do have more hope though that If Romanov and Canfield also pan out we may have the makings of a pretty good future.  I would have been more confident had we still had Sergechev, rather than Drouin, but I digress.

anyway, I do think we still need to substantially improve the talent pool and I think there as a chance to do that given our cap space if we take on another bad contract in return.

what I don’t want is another blip of one or two half decent showings and than going back to bubble status - which is essentially what we have been through the Houle-Savard-Gainey-Ghost-MB years.

I agree with a lot of your points. Excited to see how KK and Suzuki are developing, it bodes well for the future, this kind of experience will do wonders for their development. I don't think their defence is deep enough yet, their top 3 is going to log a lot of minutes and will likely get worn down in a grueling 7 game series. However the positives vastly outweigh the negatives right now.

Just smile, was a sweet comeback win.

Thats 2 more wins than i thought would have.

BlackHawks are following the Habs lead...would love to see both upsets happen.

I don't think the Hawks beating the Oilers would be a huge upset.  Also I want the Oilers to win so the Hawks pick in the 2nd round is higher.  As a Habs fan why would you want Chicago to win?

Tankers were hoping for losses and look at where we are now.

To me it’s an extreme fallacy. Drafting is only one small element of the team’s future success. Suzuki was 13th overall, as an example, and here we are quarrelling about 9th vs 16th overall.

The team having success in any given year has a positive impact on the future of the club as well.

We all want the 1st overall draft pick, but there is no rational reason to be thinking about it during a potential playoff run. We are obviously not the best team in the league but neither were we in 2002 when Theodore beat the Bruins, or 2010 when we went on an exciting run with major upsets.

There’s no one here who thinks we will win the cup. That doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate wins and cheer on the underdog. I heard a comment about MB selling “hope” and fans buying it. Is that really why we want the Habs to lose? So MB can’t brainwash us? When I watch the Habs, I don’t even think of Bergevin. There’s too much focus on the wrong things.

You make a lot of good points. Sure, I would love the #1 pick but there is an 87.5% chance we don't get it if we lose.  I don't think they will win the cup either but you get a hot goalie, kids develop quicker than you think, other teams suffer some key injuries and you never know. Right now we are playing with house money,  I am thrilled with any win but won't be crushed if they lose.  I am also thrilled to see the way Suzuki is developing. He is a keeper.

Our kind aren't welcome here. Long term outlook has no place at a playoff party.

I have a long term outlook too but if you can't enjoy a playoff victory then you might as well ...............................  sorry I don't know how finish the sentence.  Playoff victories haven't been exactly plentiful the last few years.

Huge stealing game 1 like that.  Suzuki should be feeling like a world beater tonight after his great goal and amazing work on the PK.  For next game I want more Suzuki, more Domi higher in the lineup, less penalties, and less (if any!) Drouin.

Suzuki is going to be a good one. No doubt about that.
