  1. I don't think of the Habs as being soft either, they have trouble finishing,  have some deficiencies on defense but in my opinion the work ethic and grit has not been a problem.  They have lost a lot of one goal games. Do they have anybody in the top 50 scoring?

I'm gonna disagree that Domi has been soft.

On the wing, he has a harder time getting the opportunities to drive the net, but he's been involved in the forecheck and on the boards.

Again, I'm not saying he's played at his best, but I don't see the issue as being soft.

    Domi  soft???   ask Aaron Ekblad

Caulfield will be our version of Gaudreau, I wouldn't trade him at all.

I think they are different types of players, Caulfield more of a sniper, Gaudreau is a better skater and more of a dangler. I sure hope Caulfield works out, he sure can shoot puck the puck.

That was a deep draft , Weber and Bergeron went in the 2nd round.

Those are pretty darn good 2nd round picks.  Hopefully the Habs can do the same thing with one of their 2nd round picks. That's why I keep cheering for Chicago to lose, woud like that pick to be high in the 2nd round.

Sure. Id love to have him.

Im not trading suzuki primeau romanov and the habs 1st for him though

Agree, I didn't suggest the Habs give up that much,  I suggested the price for Byfield would likely be less than the price suggested for Lafreniere. Let's say the Habs have the 10th pick. would you give up that pick and Caulfield to move up to no 2 to get Byfield?  Would that be enough?

Funny thing is we could of had him in the draft but took AK.

Yup. A lot of teams probably regret passing on Getzlaf, was the 19th player taken in the 2003 draft and I would argue the best player from that draft.

I think Byfield will be a good NHLer too.  I just don't think he's going to be McDavid or MacKinnon level either.

He'd be something like a Ryan Getzlaf or a Jason Spezza if he hits his potential.   Good enough to be a number 1 centre on a team... but no one is going to confuse him for a top 10 player in the NHL.

I would take a young Ryan Getzlaf any day of the week.

  8. I like Byfield, probably the youngest player in this draft, has been a beast for Sudbury this year. He did not shine at the world juniors but neither did Lafreniere last year.  Lafreniere is almost a whole year older than Byfield, that's a big difference at this age. I love Byfield's size and skating ability.

What do you guys think of this. It seems

li a hell of a gamble. I would love to see Lafreniere in Montreal but I think that deal is a bit too much. From gohabsgo

Norman Flynn confessed to Martin Lemay that he would offer nothing less than Nick Suzuki, Alex Romanov, Cayden Primeau and the Canadiens 2020 first round pick overall to bring Lafrenière to Montreal.

That's a lot to give up. Having said that it would be worth it if you got a McDavid/McKinnon type player however I don't think Lafreniere is projected to be that. It would also put a whole lot of pressure on a French Canadian kid to be the saviour.  A lot of #1 picks have not lived up to the hype. I would rather give up less and maybe get Byfield although that's probably a longshot.

I agree you don't trade them just to trade them. You trade them to fill holes on the team.  I am not going to over look a trade opportunity to trade from strength to fill a weakness. This was my whole argument from the get go.

Yes, if you can fill a big hole by trading Domi then you have to consider it. In my opinion Domi's trade value is high because of his age, ability and passion for the game. Trading Petry would create a hole in the short term but he is also winding down on the last quarter of his career, depends what you could get. He would definitely be a valuable piece for a contender but is it worth giving him up for a late 1st round pick?

A younger version of Patches, never close to 30g seasons.

More like... Cammalleri ?! Desharnais ?! A. Kotsistin?!

You are really comparing Domi to these guys or am I missing something here? I would take  Domi over any of those guys without even thinking about it. Not even close!!

Been saying this forever. All tanking guarantees is that your team is absolutely appallingly terrible for an indefinite number of years. No, no, no. The key is to have elite drafting and development. Teams like Boston, San Jose, and Tampa Bay show you can contend for years without tanking, just as teams like Buffalo and EDM show that tanking can be completely futile.

There are examples on both sides when it comes to tanking. No question Edmonton and Buffalo have been abysmal. But Chicago (Kane and Toews) and Pittsburgh (Malkin and Crosby) did pretty well after they tanked. The  key is not having it go on so long that you develop a losing culture. Of course you need to draft and develop well so you can surround the stars you get from tanking with  good players,.

If you Are going to trade guys like Domi, Tatar, Petry.... I wouldn't ask for 1st round picks this year , but I would ask for 1st round picks next year. You never know what is going to happen in a season, look at Ottawa for an example. They could get 2 top 10 picks because they got the sharks 1st pick this year. It doesn't always workout that way but you just never know with this game.

I don't disagree with your point but Domi's age is a big consideration here. The return would have to really good to trade him, certainly would not trade him for a pick in the last half of the first round. With Domi you have a pretty good idea of what you have, a guy who will play with a lot of passion and likely score 60-70 points consistently. Tatar is also valuable and still relatively young while Petry at 32 has more good years behind him than ahead of him.

So we're overpaying? Some would argue Tatar is worth more these days straight up

Some would definitely argue that especially when you take into account the difference in their contracts. Subban is definitely not a $9 million/year player right now.  Tatar is far better value.

  15. Not suggesting the Habs do this but let's say they end up with the 10th overall pick in the draft. How far could they move up by offering the 10th pick and Caufield?  Would love to get Byfield, he could be the big strong #1 centre you dream about having.  I think Caufield will either be a 40 goal scorer in the NHL or a bust, no in between.

Yep - but the Habs were a playoff-bound team and viewed as a team on the rise then.  They're a team that's well out of contention at the moment so the enthusiasm to stick around probably isn't going to be as strong.  Considering their recent track record on the UFA market, I certainly wouldn't consider it a given that he'd re-sign and knowing that Petry is your best trade asset, I'm not moving him for someone that I'm hopeful about having beyond this season.

Agree with your thoughts on this. If I am trading Petry then I want young talent, not someone who is likely to head elsewhere next year.
