He burned year one last year in the playoffs.  This is year two.  He has one left and then he's up in 2021 which is the same time Landeskog and Grubauer are up for UFA status.

You are correct, I forgot he played in the playoffs last year.  The Avs are fortunate to have pretty much the best contact in hockey (from a team point of view) in MacKinnon.

I generally don't put much stock in radio hosts when it comes to the credibility of trade rumours, especially if they're citing out of market stuff.  (For those that don't know, I also write for a rumour site and this is the type of thing I keep track of and it rarely comes to fruition.)  It's inductive reasoning (the Habs are struggling, Price is their top player, therefore it's likely that he's not happy, especially after his comment last summer) but that's not really a rumour when it's broken down.  (A Colorado radio host almost certainly isn't going to know what's going on behind the scenes in Montreal.)  Thanks for passing the info along though.

Having said that, Colorado would make some sense as a destination but remember that they have Landeskog and Makar up soon and will need a lot of cap room to extend those two.  They have some room now but they won't for too long.

Makar is just a rookie,  they must have at least 2 more years of an entry level deal and then he's only an RFA.

I can see a trade like this

    To edmonton

    Price

    To habs

    Koskinen and Puljujarvi

But i think they would be over The cap.

That's the issue with an Edmonton trade, Oilers don't have enough cap room otherwise it could be a fit. I could definitely see Pulijujarvi as a piece coming back, still think he has great potential and would be comfortable on a team with other Finns.  His english is poor.

    1. Price wants to go to a team that can contend. Probably not NJ.

    2. Yes, Price is an upgrade on NJ's tire-fire in nets. But whomever we replace Price with in the near-term will be a downgrade on Price.

    3. Both the Habs and NJ are rebuilding teams. So if it makes sense for one to "upgrade" to Price in net, why does it make sense for the other to "downgrade" and trade Price away? Either Price and his contract are a good move for a rebuilding team, or they aren't. If they are, then we should keep him, assuming he is amenable to that.

Agree, I really don't think Price is the least bit interested in going to New Jersey, if he's leaving Montreal then he would want to go to a contender and the Habs would likely have to take a contract back. It's a really complicated trade to make, I just don't see it happening but you never know.

I would start right after the all star game. Let the league know Price, Weber, Tatar and Petry are all available. Get as much first rounders and prospects. Then if you don't land the 1st overall pick you can trade for it.

I expect MB will get a lot of phone calls. They have some excellent veterans who would give any playoff team a huge boost. They need to find a partner that really really wants to win this year to get maximum bang for the buck.

Well ... Lindgren played a decent game tonight. If he could keep that up, I'd be happy with a Lindgren-Primeau tandem.

I think Primeau is certainly the key to their long term prospects but his development would be much better with a veteran goalie to tutor him.

Just when you think it can’t get any worse.

Please I hope management doesn’t do anything rash

I don't think they will do anything rash. Realistically any hopes of a playoff spot are pretty much gone.  They would have to go at least 15 games above 500 the rest of the year to have a chance. Not going to happen.

Would need to be a top 5 pick a mid 1st round, a top prospect, and an elite young player with an amazing contract. If at all.

That's a lot to give up. I would only give up that much if I was convinced that the #1 pick would turn out to be a McDavid or Mackinnon.  Lafreniere is good no doubt,  had a great tourney.  Will he be a game changer in the NHL or just an excellent top tier player.  Time will tell.

I definitely remember that the 1st overall was Nail Yakupov, and he turned out great 🙂

Living in Edmonton, there are bad memories of that draft. If you look at that draft (2012), there are so many that didn't make it. Not only did Edmonton take Yakupov #1 (complete bust or you could make the case for bad development),  they ended up trading a #1 pick (turned out to be Barzal) and a #2 pick  to the Islanders  for the #4 pick in 2012 (Griffin Reinhart),  another complete bust.  Chiarelli made some bonehead moves but that one really turned out bad.

Kovalchuk was pretty much a zero risk move, he seems really determined to do well, I was impressed with his interview. I hope he proves everyone wrong.  I agree with much of your post.

We were expected to be a bubble team, not a lottery squad, which is what we're shaping up to be. Of course, injuries play a key role in that outcome, but if you're an old sour-puss like me, you also remember that MB did very little to improve the team over the summer, even though the team was a failure last season. When I kept pointing this out, people told me, 'don't be so impatient, there's lots of time to improve the team before the deadline.' Turns out there wasn't lots of time at all, was there?

In terms of a more general attitude problem, if I'm being honest, I still blame Bergevin for failing to take the excellent hand he inherited in 2012 and turning it into a legit contender. Instead, he let its two top-6 C age out and we were left with a bottom-dwelling suction eel. We never got to see Gainey-Gauthier Rebuild 3.0 come to full fruition, because Bergevin was not able to find even a decent 2nd-line C. Instead of serious playoff runs after 2015, therefore, we got four out of five years with playoffs missed.

If this is your interpretation of the past decade, then it's hard to get up and wave the pom-poms for Bergevin - although for my part, I believe the record shows that I *have* credited him with good moves when warranted.

Indeed, I will admit that most of Bergevin's moves have been good once he got the stupid Drouin trade out of his system. Some of them have been superb (e.g., Domi). But he still did not improve the team from last year and so some of the blame for this season's emerging disaster rests on him. Beyond that, while I certainly agree we shouldn't eviscerate the system for immediate help, I'm also not as convinced that our future is as guaranteed super-shiny as the rhetoric suggests. Maybe it is, maybe it's not. So again, hard to be incredibly chipper if that's your take on things.

Just my attempt to explain why some of us might be less than upbeat re: the Montreal Canadiens.

I think that's a very fair post. I think the only difference between your outlook and mine is that I am trying to focus on what MB should do going forward?  Who is available to help the team and what is the cost?  You spend a little more time looking back.   As much as I admire Gainey the hockey player and person, his trade of McDonagh and Higgins for Gomez was a head scratcher.

  11. 7 minutes ago, Habsfan89 said:

No I said they were good trades and good returns. But the reason behind those trades were because of mistakes made by Bergevin.

What mistakes.  He got Armia for virtually nothing because he had cap room. You could say drafting Galchenyuk was a mistake at three but it was a crappy draft year,  does anyone remember who was drafted one and two?   I think it was just time for a change for Max Pac and he got a great return.

How do you expect to replace Weber? Also I said 2 years. The retooling has been done. The prospects are in the tank. This team should be a serious team in a year or two. If not, that is when you trade away your assets. Nobody in contention this year has the cap space to take on Price or Weber. This is not ps4. I am fine with the road being travelled. I am become sick of the Montreal fans though and understand why no UFAs want to put up with them. Next time you post you should realise that NHL players have phones too. They read this shit. Would you want to play for the current fan base?

I agree, I am good with the road being travelled right now. I am not sure what fans expect MB to do at this point in time. The last thing I want him to do is to sacrifice the future to get a little better now.

He didn't do anything to improve them last year when other teams in our division did. Which is why we ended up missing the playoffs. Then in the off season Did nothing to address hole's. So no to me he didn't do a good job with the on ice product.

He got Domi last year, he got Armia last year.  I think those 2 additions definitely improved the team last year.

  14. 31 minutes ago, Habsfan89 said:

No he should of said this is a full rebuild. Which means Price, Weber and Petry are all available for trade and we will be a lottery pick team for the next 3 years. I will of been totally on board and not care about the on ice product.

But he said this is a reset. Which means The on ice product should still be competitive. Which it isn't and that's why he doesn't get a pass from me on the on ice product. He does get a pass on the drafting and prospect reset, but not the on ice reset.

You don't think they were competitive last year?  They were very competitive this year (except for the last 10 days).  I could care less whether he calls it a reset, rebuild or retool. I just want MB to make good decisions going forward so they can compete for the cup again.

  15. 13 minutes ago, Habsfan89 said:

Yeah but when the past keeps repeatting itself you can. That's part of the problem.  Nothing has changed with the on ice product in 7 years. That's why people bash him. He doesn't just run the farm system he runs the NHL team as well. Has he improved the future of this team i think he has. We're now top what 5 in the league for prospects.  Since he bought into the new NHL he's made better picks. But over that time has he improved the on ice product of the team? No he hasn't we continue to miss the playoffs and be a none factor. That's where all frustration of the fans come from.

Fans can jump on and off the bandwagon pretty quickly.  I think most on this board were pretty optimistic after winning 3 of 4 on their western road trip.  They looked to be in pretty good shape. Then a bad 10 day stretch completed changed the narrative. Last year they had 96 points!!  Most years that would get you in the playoffs. I thought they were a pretty exciting team last year but some here make it sound like they were awful. Much work to do but I honestly believe they are headed in the right direction.
