Yeah but this slide started when they got hurt.

But in my eyes this is a team that looks lost when on the ice. This team isn't playing the coach's system and that's on every aspect of the game.... Offense/defense and special teams. The players are just not listening to anyone.

Well there is a coach available who studied sport psychology and is very familiar with the city of Montreal. Maybe they will listen to him?

If we're not going all in now what's the point in keeping guys like  Price, Weber, Petry and Gallagher? Trade them all and play all the young guys. At least fans won't have false hope. Keeping these guys gives you a chance to win, so why not surround them with talent to win.

I like our forward group, we needed to upgrade our D badly just look at last nights game vrs NYR. We finally have the type of prospects that other teams want in trades that are rebuilding , so why not finally take advantage of it?

To make trades for top elite players That team's are rebuilding and look for

    Draft picks

    NHL ready prospects

    Contracts that are ending

We have all that right now plus that cap space.  Make the moves now.

    For example

    Tatar + Poehling + 1st round pick

Would get you a top LD that we need. Would it weaken us no it would only make us stronger.

If you are giving up Tatar + Poehling  + a 1st round pick then you better get an elite NHL defenceman,  in my opinion Gostisbhere is not elite. That's a lot to give up.  Your leading goal scorer, plus a great prospect plus a first.

    Here is an idea:

    to Chicago:
Chicago's 2nd round pick, Josh Brook and Christian Folin (to make room on the NHL roster)

    to Montreal:

    Erik Gustafsson

On a contract year, Gustafsson would coe to Montreal like Petry did and may fill the LD hole.

Chicago gets a draft pick, a good prospect and an NHL RD which they seem to be lacking.

He did put up a lot of points last year but Josh Brook and a 2nd seems like a lot to give up for a guy who will likely be a rental. I am really high on Josh Brook and hate to give him up but in the right deal it may be worth it.

Not a link just remember from hockey talk show 's when they talk rumor mills.  I think hockey central or satellite hot stove. But I remember it was Draisaiti or hall at times with the 1st. But they were saying Bergevin was pushing for them to include Klefbom.

But I do remember the whole thing got started because French media and fans wanted Bergevin to trade up to draft Dubois. So people brought up PK because Edmonton needed a D and Draisaiti was brought up because Montreal needed a center.

    But what's done is done.

Yes, what's done is done. Who really knows what went on behind the scenes, two top 4 picks would have been too much to give up for Subban.  Bottom line is the Oilers kept Draisaitl and they are very glad they didn't trade him anywhere.  Would have loved to see him in a Hab uniform. He is a beast.

Wish we made that trade with Edmonton for their 1st and Draisaitl for PK instead of the Nashville one for Weber. Love Weber but I think we would been better with the Edmonton trade.

You and me both. I remember when there were rumours of PK going to Edmonton. I was really really hoping we would get Draisaitl. He's not going anywhere now.  What a stud.

I think Toronto is more like Edmonton of past years.  bad coaching, bad D and bad goaltending.

Edmonton has turned it around , finally found themselves a good coach with a system that the players are buying into. they're getting some good goaltending and are playing good D.

Will Toronto ever turn things around?

I think what has made it easier for Tippett in Edmonton is that he has a couple superstars who totally buy into the team first/structured approach and the rest have to follow. Not sure Babcock has the same support. Plus they are getting excellent goaltending which has obviously been helped by Tippett's approach. I think they will slip a bit at some point but they have turned it around despite missing one of their best defenceman (Larson).  Draisaitl is such a beast, so strong on the puck. Signing him to a long term contract at 8.5mil a year is starting to look like a good deal.

Everyone has a right to their opinion. Sure.

No one has a right to a million-dollar salary and a privileged platform on a prestige national broadcast. With that platform comes responsibility. And that includes not using that platform to spew hateful opinions targeting vulnerable groups of fellow citizens.

Agree with this post.  I think Don Cherry is a good person who does a lot of good but I thought coach's corner was supposed to be about hockey and they have strayed far from that for a while. Targeting immigrants was wrong. I think the network had no choice.

Boy, I think $4 mil would be nuts. Half of that, I can see. Mete isn't bad, but he has been the most direct beneficiary of MB's comical inability to fill glaring roster holes. Add a legitimate top-pairing LD and see what happens to Mete's profile.

Agreed, Mete hasn't done enough to even come close to 4 million a year,  a good skater with a lot of potential but has a long way to go. I am thinking maybe 2 - 2.5, depending on the term.  On a deeper team he would have spent time in the AHL.

McDonagh, Trouba, Subban have been traded for relatively recently, so i dont buy you need to get very lucky. Just need to find a team out of playoffs and rebuilding or make a regular hockey deal. Habs are relatively deep at wing, so could deal a good young winger and 1st pick for a good young(ish) d-man.

Those are good examples. Perhaps my choice of words could have been better. As you said you need to find a team in rebuild mode or perhaps one that  has salary cap issues. That's why I never complain when Bergevin hasn't spent to the cap limit, good to have some powder dry if the right opportunity comes up.

    I don't want any more #5/#6 defensemen.

Totally agree, we have a lot of those type of defenceman already and nobody is giving away defenceman that can play in the top pair, they are expensive.  You have to develop your own unless you get very lucky and find a team that is desperate.

While I still stand by my claim in another thread that Toronto has a significantly stronger line-up than ours, there are definitely thunder-clouds on TO's horizon this year. Spezza was benched for the home debut for ridiculous, petty reasons...Matthews is a #metoo embarrassment...Babcock has lost collective goodwill and there are rumours of him and Dubas being at odds...and the whole culture around the team is riven with anxiety that this stacked team has a horrible playoff record and may never make the jump to playoff success. Toronto is exactly like Montreal in that the fishbowl leads to exaggerated hysteria which can then throw an organization off track (as happened to the Habs in 2009 and 2012, say). The odds of a melt-down in the TO pressure-cooker are significant. Let's hope.

No question there is a lot of pressure for the Leafs to win this year, expectations are high and  Babcock is running out of rope. It would be a real shame to see a melt down there. Not that I like to wish for bad things to happen to other teams but I can only imagine how difficult it would be to be around Leafs fans if they won the cup. Heaven forbid.

They have 3 guys in their top 6 (Tavares, Marner, Matthews) better than any forward we have on our roster.  They have added a legit PP quarterback in Barrie.  Do not kid yourself, they are going to be good...their PP is going to win them a lot of games.

No question the Leafs will be very good this year. A lot more pressure on the Leafs to win this year as Ceci, Muzzin and Barrie are all UFA's after this year.  Plus Babcock will be feeling the heat to win this year.  At some point you have to make it past the first round.

I like Shaw but as much as I’m rarely one to comment on players being over the hill (I love proven veterans), there’s the argument to be made that his style of play won’t last much longer. Concussions have taken a toll on him and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him play 50-60 games this year. I’d like Shaw on our team this year as well but this could have been a situation where it was actually decent asset management to trade him at this specific juncture in his career.

Totally agree with this comment. I really liked Shaw but I think he will be a depreciating asset from here on in. MB traded him while his market value was at a peak, good long term move in my opinion.

Suzuki and Brook look a bit overwhelmed

    Fleury looks good.

    Primeau looks great.

Fleury spent a year in the AHL so expect him to look reasonably comfortable.  I remember a lot of people saying that Kotkaniemi look awful in his first exhibition game last year

so Suzuki and Brook may need a few games to get comfortable.

    To Mtl:

    Laine

    To Wpg

    Gallagher

    Romanov

    2nd

This trade would obviously hurt a lot, but Laine is a potential Richard trophy winner.  Is this enough for Winnipeg?

That's an interesting trade. I don't think Winnipeg makes it because I think they want to win now but it would help them from a salary cap point of view. I love Gallagher but you would be trading him at a time when his value is high.

Didnt seem much hesitation by Churla-Timmins etc on taking Caufield over the 2 centres Krebs-Newhook.

No hesitation at all and no hesitation turning down the trade to move 2 spots.  Obviously they really wanted Caulfield with that pick.  Really enjoyed the behind the scenes video, thanks for sharing.

Great post.  This sums up my view perfectly. Add to the disappointment his handling of the Markov Radulov free agency.

I agree with a lot of the post too but I am always a little surprised at the Radulov criticism. Nobody ever gives MB credit for taking a chance and bringing him over to begin with.  Radulov left the NHL on bad terms originally and nobody else seemed to want to take a chance on him until MB did. I really hated to see Radulov go too, he is an excellent player. I think MB gave it his best effort to keep him but I guess it came down to money like it usually does and MB obviously would have had to offer more than Dallas because of the tax situation.

The Leafs are already going to be in LTIR for all of next season so going deeper isn't perceived as a much bigger risk.  If Marner waits until during the season to re-sign like Nylander, this will give them a bit more flexibility to accommodate the higher Year 1 cap hit that will hit the books (assuming they can pile up enough contracts to get right to the Upper Limit before LTIR'ing Clarkson and Horton).  If Marner re-signs this summer, then they get into offseason LTIR (and admittedly, I don't know the mechanics of that particular calculation).

In the meantime, they get a pick for someone they gave up on and it's not as if they'll have to pay a lot in cash to do it - only 20% of Clarkson's deal is uninsured.  Assuming his signing bonus was paid July 1st, his salary is only $1 million so technically, they save actual money with the trade.  (Where was Ottawa in all this?  This seems right up their alley...)

I have to admit that I don't understand the mechanics of a lot of this. Could Vegas not claim Clarkson on LTIR but the Leafs can?   What advantage does Vegas get by trading him if they could claim him on LTIR?

I agree with your first two points. But while Bergevin undeniably made mistakes early in his tenure, his last two-three years have been strong, so I would be loth to characterize him as a "failure".

Life would be boring if we agreed all the time. Agree with point one but I do hope/believe Kotkaniemi will be a top tier player.  Not worried about Price at 32, lots of examples (ie. Brodeur, Luongo) of top tier goalies who played at a high level late into their thirties. I get the criticism of Bergevin but I think he has been a far better GM the last couple years. He has taken a longer term approach by trying to develop from within. Chasing high priced free agents usually does not turn out well and Montreal doesn't seem to be a preferred choice anyway for whatever reason (taxes, language, media scrutiny) so developing your own seems to be a better choice.
