  1. Regarding the cap space debate,  MB has tried to use it (ie Jake Gardiner said no which was maybe a good thing).  I would rather he wait for the right opportunity than overpay but he has made attempts.  I don't have an issue trading veterans for draft picks if the right trade comes up but we do need some veteran leadership to help the kids develop.  Tatar has been a valuable players and seems to like it here, I would hang on to him unless you get at least a 1st round pick.  I expect MB will try to make a splash at the draft with it being in Montreal.

Doesn’t matter if we make the playoffs, remember? We’re guaranteed to win the Cup three years from now 😬

I wasn't aware of that guarantee but you are a smart Hab fan so I will assume you are correct that this guarantee came from somewhere.  My hope is that MB doesn't make a bad decision to help them short term.  I know it's been a long time since the Habs won the cup and I know there is frustration from not making the playoffs recently. But I hope MB stays the course and continues to build with the kids. I like KK, I like Suzuki, I like Romanov, I like Poehling. I hope he doesn't trade any of those guys because the Habs aren't winning the cup this year anyway.  Time for another beer.

Yep and unfortunately all the other teams are winning.

Terrible time to go on a 3 game losing streak but it is what it is.

Yup, if they don't turn it around quick the entry draft will be a big focus again. They have a lost a ton of ground very quickly.

That french kid is pretty good eh.

He is pretty good. Shows you the difference 1 year can make in the development of a young hockey player.  He is ready for this tournament.

I thought Caulfield was barely noticeable but it's just 1 game, hopefully his bad games are against Canada. I think Quinton Byfield will be a beast.

I have a hockey crush on Nick Suzuki....

Nobody tell anybody. It's a secret!

I might have one as well. Just checking the highlights,  his passing skills are phenomenal. Almost the perfect guy  to play off the  half wall on the power play.

Price played well IMHO, but this post was fairly prescient.

An entertaining, spirited affair. Petry and Domi were excellent, obviously, but Fleury seemed to be on drugs or something. And gven the game plan - DON'T TAKE PENALTIES!! - it was a bit annoying that they took so many dumb ones.

Am I the only guy on earth who likes the Oil's 3rd jersey? I much prefer it to the gruesome colour scheme on display tonight.

Price did play well,  best game he has played against the Oilers in a while.  The game was there for the taking against what I think is a fragile Oiler team right now.  Too many dumb penalties as you said.

Right, that was the series where Guy Lafleur was supposed to "put Gretzky in his back pocket." Ouch.

Part of me misses the 5-game first round. It was even more intense than the current (wonderful) 7-game series, and lent itself to upsets.

That was the one.  Dave Hunter harassed Guy endlessly.  Big  ouch.

  8. I have a bad feeling about this game. Oilers lost last night so they are a desperate team (have lost 4 in a row at home I think),  Habs are probably feeling pretty comfortable after 2 wins on the road. Oilers saved their best goalie for this game as Koskinen has played far better than Smith. Price never seems to play that well against the Oilers.  I hope I am dead wrong but I think the desperate teams wins tonight.

    Would Julien even play him?

Gonna take a lot more guaranteed offense to get Cousins out of Claude's lineup.

No question, Cousins is playing really well and has been a great and cheap addition.  Suzuki just continues to impress, so smart with the puck.

Galchenyuk is really struggling in Pittsburgh.  He's UFA in the summer.

Would you take him back as a rental for a third round pick?

Yes. That would really make the Domi trade look good.  Max Domi for a 3rd round pick. I'll take it.   Chris has a point, he is not a Julien type player.

Oilers had bigger issues than lack of leadership.  Who’s the leader now?  One of their youngest players.  Their biggest issue was a horrible and toxic management team and a revolving door of coaches.  Bigger mistake IMO than than the Hall trade and one that really set them back is when they fired Ralph Krueger to bring in Eakin - who seemed to be more preoccupied with the menu in the press room than coaching and developing his damn players.  It was the rotten chummy  old boy’s club that created the toxic situation in Edmonton.  They just had a horrible management team and than to top it off they brought in Chiarelli. The team actually got worse when they did bring in “leaders” like Souray, Russell and Lucic over the years.  Management was the biggest issue -  kind of like MB did with hanging on to his chums Lefebve, DD, Therrien was when all should have been fired long before they were.

No question management was terrible, when I speak about leadership I also throw management into the mix. I agree about Ralph Krueger, a class act. A young player can be a leader if they have maturity and the right work ethic. Connor McDavid has really grown into the role, he is an exceptionally mature young man. How old was Johnathan Toews when he was leading the Black Hawks to all those cups?

  12. 16 minutes ago, Habsfan89 said:

It was more of a disaster because they never filled their team needs. They kept on picking forwards and left a hole in net and on D that they never filled.

Lack of leadership was a massive problem and the major problem. Sure they had holes, brought guys in too quickly before they were ready. They had lots of issues but lack of leadership was the most glaring. Ken Holland is starting to fix things, they hired the right guy to be GM finally. Their leader is a young guy (McDavid) but he is mature beyond his years and works his ass off every game so he is respected by his teammates. They are finally headed in the right direction.

This has already been explained... teams with no players over the age of 30 often fail in developing their young players.  See the Oilers and the Leafs from early in this decade.  They had no vet leadership and the Eberle, Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Yakupov core failed to develop into a team.  The Leafs with all those high picks that was supposed to be built around a core of Schenn, Kadri, Rielly, Reimer, Tlusty, also failed miserably.  Its no coincidence that both teams had to find a mix of veterans and youth before their youth could start to grow.

But sure, lets trade everyone over the age of 26 and assume that our youth can grow in that environment.

Lets throw 20 year old Primeau to the lions as a starting goalie in Montreal.  Doing the same with Price nearly ruined him, and we are lucky he came back strong after the 2010 season.  So wlets repeat that mistake again, with a guy who is good... but he isn't Price, 5th overall, generational goalie good.

You aren't going to develop young players in a losing environment.... playing big games as we are on the bubble of he playoffs down the stretch is going to do more for their development than trading Price and Weber and Petry and being the Red Wings, playing meaningless games til the end of the season. That would create a culture of losing and thats hard to break.

This isn't a video game... you are dealing with real people.  You have to look at how the human interaction plays a part of building a team, not just saying, lets throw all this youth to the wolves and see what happens.

No question you need veteran leadership that is respected by the young guys.  That is one thing the Habs do have with Weber, Gallagher, Price etc. and these guys are critical in helping the young guys develop and mature. As you pointed out correctly the Oilers had none of that so the leadership void was filled by the young guys (ie Hall, Eberle etc.) and it was a disaster.

Honestly, why do we have Price and Weber on this team, if this is the route Bergevin insists on taking. It's a contradiction

This gm is such a bum. He sees this team as non-playoff team, and that's perfectly fine, apparently. I cannot believe this guy still has a job.

I don't think Bergevin is saying that this is a non playoff team, he is simply saying that he sees the team as fighting for a playoff spot and that he is not willing to mortgage the future to get a little better, would rather use the cap space instead. I agree with his thoughts. Obviously he must feel that he has Molson's support on this.

Has nothing to do with being a loose cannon and perhaps scratching him worked.

The Radulov that came and played for Montreal was a much more mature guy than the one who played for Nashville. I believe the Habs had zero issues with him.  Benn should have been scratched early in the year but it's hard to embarrass your captain.

He made a lot of mistakes.  Also some good moves.

    Armia for cap space.

    Domi for galchenyuk

    Byron for nothing

    Tatar suzuki for pacioretty

Chariot is looking like a good sign

    Petry for picks

MB has not filled the ld hole, but he is not inept.

This doesnt mean I like losing and missing the playoffs. Just that he appears to be willing to adapt. As does julien. These are strong traits for a leader. I give him another full season if I'm molson.

Agree,  MB's body of work the last couple years has been far far better than the first part of his tenure as GM. That's why I am willing to give him a break as I think he has started to figure it out.  Obviously, still a lot of work to do.

I rarely criticize the recent management group for bad signings but always criticize the cap space. I don’t even mind the Alzner signing when I think about it, because we still have cap space we haven’t used. The dollar amount has been irrelevant when one thinks about it. He’s just not a great player.

The only thing I have to criticize about the Radulov signing is that even at the time of the signing, I would have liked more than 1 year. Of course, we can then get into the debate about whether or not Radulov would have taken it. At that point in time, I don’t see why he wouldn’t have, however.

No doubt, looking back, it would have been great to sign Radulov for more than one year.  Radulov originally left the NHL with questions about his character and commitment so I think GM's were reluctant at the time to take a big chance with him. He obviously has matured a bit since then.

    Who can forget Semin

I had forgotten Semin.  Then there is the original  Radulov signing,  a signing no one gave him credit for .  No question MB made some blunders but it seems like the people who criticize MB for any bad signings also criticize him for leaving cap room.  The big question for me is what do we do moving forward or do we continually rehash the past.
