How will the wee fellow do?

Will the Wings wingers go wide and take him hard to the net?

Will they dump puck into his corner and try and put him though the end boards?

I like Savard as his partner, to start anyways.

I think Savard is the obvious partner right now for Hutson, an experienced, stay at home guy who is good at mentoring. I certainly don't think 2 games will tell the tale of how effective Hutson will be but it might provide some clues. Hopefully the kid has fun and isn't afraid to try things.

Hopefully Detroit wants the playoffs more than the Habs want to be a spoiler.

I think we will probably need Detroit to be successful for the next two games

I have no doubt Detroit wants the playoff more than the Habs want to be a spoiler BUT wanting something too bad can cause you to grip your stick a little tighter than you normally would. Sometimes it's easier to play when you have no pressure. I think it will be a close game with Detroit winning 5-3 (empty net goal).

Detroit is going to crush us tonight.

I wouldn't bet on that.  The Habs are playing loose right now and giving everybody trouble.  Detroit had a very emotional win against the Leafs and may have a letdown or take the Habs lightly. The pressure is all on Detroit. I think the 1st goal is key.  If the Habs score first then I think Detroit is in trouble.

If the Habs win tonight then they likely also win tomorrow night as Detroil will be completely demoralized.

I dont believe we should give a guy who is going to be 32 years old when the contract even starts... and is an inconsistent bottom line player... a contract extension.

I think that is the key point. It's not like he is a guy who is 25/26 entering his prime years.  Injuries increase with age. He will be 31, almost 32 when his contract expires and he will be looking for one more good payday before he retires and it won't be from us.

If we get a good offer for Armia if move him. He’s got one year left, so if we keep him not a big deal. Gives us a veteran on the bottom 6.

I would agree. If he plays well next year then he will have some value at the trade deadline, if not we thank him for his service at the end of the year and move on.

A late bloomer at age 30! Just goes to show, patient development pays off 🤪

No joke, though, he has played like an absolute stud top-9 forward over the second half. If he continues it into next season, we might be able to move that contract and maybe even get something back.

He has had a terrific 2nd half, don't know what caused the turnaround (time in the AHL, Marty's magic?) but he has always had the skills, just couldn't put it together for any length of time. Hopefully it continues although I am OK if the next 2 games are mediocre for him.

    The emergence of

    1. Slaf (by a bullet)

    2. Suzuki as a legitimate #1C

    3. Newhook as a speedy, dangerous 2nd line type

    4. Primeau

are really the good news stories of this season. They're kind of 2024's equivalent to last season's realization that we had legit young players on D. And

    5. the second-half surge by Caufield offers some reassurance that maybe his shoulder surgery really did deflate his production, such that he is closer to a 40-goal guy than a 30-goal guy. (Not that there's anything wrong with being a 30-goal guy, but safe to say most of us harboured hopes that he might be an elite goal scorer. That hope remains credible, and next season will tell the tale).

You know me, though - I'm a fretful sort. One thing that worries me a bit about all this is that much of the good news has occurred during "garbage time," with the Habs safely out of the playoffs and all pressure off. The Galchenyuk precedent reminds us to be cautious about reading too much into second-half surges by young players on terrible teams. I think, though, that our hopes in these five factors are well-founded.

Agree with your points but you forgot about the emergence of Joel Armia. Is he ready to blossom? Has he turned the corner?   OK, let's not get too excited.

  8. It's hard to believe after their recent struggles but the Flyers could still make the playoffs if the following happens.

    1) Montreal beats Detroit in regulation in 1 of their 2 remaining games

    2) Pittsburgh loses one of their remaining 2 games in regulation

    3) Philly beats Washington in regulation.

  9. A regulation loss would have been better BUT they are now 2 points ahead of Ottawa and the Sens have the tie breaker so another regulation loss by the Habs or another 2 points by the Sens guarantees they will finish ahead of Montreal. It would also be nice if Arizona could take a point from Calgary tomorrow night.  Arizona has beaten Vancouver and Edmonton back to back so maybe that is too much to expect.

Plus that was a huge win by Detroit against Toronto tonight. It guarantees that their games against Montreal will be massive for them.  Hopefully they don't choke.

Helenius is number 2 in my rankings.

Which have started to be posted by the way.

    We have 6 up.

It was interesting in Hughes's interview the other day with Seravalli when he said if a LD was the best player available when they drafted that he may trade up or down. That would eliminate Silayev and Dickinson (who I am a big fan of).  Not sure if Hughes was blowing smoke or just being honest.

Have you ever seen a draft where the projections from 2 - 12 were so all over the place?

As sacrilegious as rooting for Ottawa sounds that’s is exactly what we all should be doing tonight.

It is sacrilegious but it's all about the greater good right now. Lose in regulation tonight, lose in regulation to Detroit on Monday, then they can win their final home game of the year. A perfect ending. Of course perfect endings rarely happen.

Habs have a back to back against Detroit to end the season and Detroit is in a battle for a wildcard so I’m expecting a very good Red Wings team.

Yes, those should be critical games for the Red Wings.

  13.

I don't know how respected these guys are but they were talking about their rankings on another board. This is from a couple days ago. They ranked the top 32 and the top 4 are pretty similar to a lot of analysts (ie. Demidov, Lindstrom, Catton, Celebrini) but after that they are so different (ie Parekh at 22, Dickinson at 15 and hard to believe Helenius at 30!!  Maybe keep our Winnipeg pick if he goes that late).

He talks about Helenius at 15:30 and you can just scroll through if interested.

  14. The only teams the Habs can catch now are Calgary, Arizona and Ottawa, 8th at worst before the balls drop.  Calgary has 2 games in hand and an easy schedule. Ottawa finishes against the Rangers and the Bruins but if those teams have their division clinched by then they might be resting some players. I only cheer against the Oilers when they play the Habs but the Oilers have 2 games left against Arizona so go Yotes!!

    It's a big game Saturday!!

Leaves them $1,464,183 under the projected cap for 18 players, for the 18 players currently on their NHL roster/cap ... although up to $6,464,183 as Lehner undoubtedly will be on LTIR again next season ... Marchessault, Mantha and Stephenson pending UFAs ... also Martinez, but I expect Hanifan is his direct replacement.

VGKs ownership is certainly committed to doing what it takes to "keep the team together" ... will they manage to (do they want to) keep Marchessault?  He could be of interest to HuGo on a short-term deal.

No surprise they got a Hannifin deal done. Marchessault is going on 34 so it would have to be a short term deal however he is coming off a 40+ goal season and is likely looking for at least 3 years. Unless he is dying to play for the Habs and willing to give a big hometown discount then I just don't see it happening.
