To make any difference in terms of the Leaves not getting pushed around, Reaves would have to play so many minutes that he would help the Panthers win without their having to push TO around.

No question having Reaves on the ice does not help the Leafs win, just making the point that Reaves has nothing to gain by starting crap against the Habs, especially Arber.

  2. I am disappointed Arber is not playing tonight. I don't think Reaves would be chasing him around, he didn't last game. At this point in the season Reaves has much more to lose than Arber by getting in a fight. Easy to get hurt in a fight, Arber would miss the last 6 games of the year, Reaves has playoffs coming up to think about. The Leafs don't want to get pushed around by Florida again.

This is a bit out of left field, and certainly reflects my Vancouver exile from civilization, but Dakota Joshua might be an intriguing UFA option at W. A lot would depend on term (he's 27) but he's like a more consistent, game-in and game-out version of Armia - or maybe the guy MB thought he was getting when he re-signed Armia: big, physical, goes to the net, can score. (15 goals this season). He wouldn't be a big fish UFA signing but he could be a nice secondary piece.

Is 15 goals for Joshua an anomaly or something that can be counted upon going forward?  Armia got 16 goals in 58 games one year.  But, you know Joshua a lot better than I do. He might be a great 3rd line guy for the right price.

The Habs should be meeting with every player ranked in their range in the draft.  Meeting a player and getting to know them is scouting and gathering info.  It doesnt mean they are picking them.  They are going to do this with all those prospects.

Of course, part of the due diligence process is meeting with the players. If they meet with a player multiple times then it could mean they have a serious interest.  They have to meet with everyone in their range as they simply don't know who will be available when they draft.

  5. I'll be honest. I really don't want 2 points tonight. Would prefer they not catch Calgary.  However it's the 2nd game of a back to back for Tampa and I think they will very likely be resting Vasilevsky so the Habs have a very reasonable chance of winning. A 6-4 regulation loss with the young guns continuing to score would be fine with me.

  6. Likely not a big deal as I assume they meet with most prospects in their draft range.

fans of-the-day over-estimated what that team was and/or could/would become ... just as they did many teams for almost three decades in the pre-HuGo-era.

I don't remember being overly excited about that team but that's what fan's do (short for fanatic). We hope and dream because we long for the day when the Habs are on top again so we sometimes become a little unrealistic in our outlook. I am a Habs fan and will continue to hope and dream and pray that HuGo makes all the right moves to get us back where we belong.

I’m not sure if Danault should have been signed or not. It’s a really close call.

It may been a close call at the time but looking back I am glad they didn't sign him. Where would we be now if they had signed him?  No doubt in the short term we would have been better, stronger up the middle, maybe a bubble team for the playoffs. Certainly not a contender. Danault is a good player.

We wouldn't have been able to draft Slafkovsky and instead we would have a 31 year old center making approx 6M a year for the next few years.  I think the pain was worth it.

So the best, most likely scenario is that Calgary finishes 11 th worst overall or just outside the playoffs.

I think it’s possible but I don’t see Florida in that range.

If both teams finish bottom 10 then the Habs get the better pick of the two? Even though they are bottom 10?

Yes, I consider that the best, most likely scenario as I doubt the Panthers drop so much next year that they are near the bottom. Florida is a very good team but stranger things have happened. (key injuries can happen)

The trade conditions don't specifically mention if they both finish bottom 10 so I would assume (could be wrong) that they would simply get the Flames pick if they both finished bottom 10 because they traded for the Flames pick. That's a good point you brought up and I wondered the same thing but if it's not mentioned in the conditions then it likely just reverts to the Flames pick.

I read that Stephane Gonzales from BPM Sports, reported that the Canadiens are quite interested in 2024 top prospect Tij Iginla.

If he falls to us is he a player we would want....would he be a good pick?

Yes, it was posted on this board. Would he be a good pick? Only time will tell. He is a fast riser in this draft. Also one of the youngest players available in the draft.

We should remember that nearly everyone on this board preferred to let him walk than to have Bergevin sign him to the contract that he got with LA.

That is true, still think it was the right decision. Signing Danault would have made us better in the short term but still well short of being a playoff contender. He is 31 now, we needed to rebuild.

  12. Regarding the Flames pick it has become simpler to figure out as the Flames pick won't be 20-32 this year and the Panthers 2024 1st rounder will transfer to Philly this year. Basically for next year it comes down to the following:

    1) if the Calgary and Florida picks are both outside the top 10 then we get the better of the picks

    2) if Calgary's pick is inside the top 10 but Florida's is not then we get the Florida pick

Ideally they both tank next year.

Wouldnt be surprised if Calgary drafts Iginla.

I wouldn't be surprised either, assuming he is still available. Iginla has been one of the fastest risers in the draft.

Habs are only 3 points behind the Flames although Calgary has one of the easiest remaining schedules but that doesn't always mean anything.

At this point in the season we didnt think they would target either Dach or Newhook.  Thats the thing, the pool of potential players via trade is large.

I just look at it this way... HuGo know that they need anothet top 6 forward.  If its clear to us, it is of course clear to them.  Then i look at the UFA list and there arent many good options there.  So i think they are going to try and make a trade for what they need.

Agree on those points. The Dach and Newhook trades caught everyone by surprise. We certainly need help up front, nobody here would argue that.
