I assume many/most/all NHL teams will be doing this ... but I like the habs version

Exactly, its just opinions ... when he's 32, I doubt he'll want a Suzuki like contract where he's signed until he's 40 at close to 8+ mil/season ...
Don't think anyone was suggesting he would necessarily ask for 8 years ... but at 32, depending on various variables (e.g.,AAV, how TT has played the next two seasons, where the rebuild is at), even four years might be more term than they should be offering a 30+ player ... if Tyler were willing to take an "J'aime Montréal" discount that would certainly be a positive.

I want us to draft this guy.
He is a huge 17-year old Dman playing in SHL. (Same team as Heineman)

Elite prospects shows rankings ranging from 35-50 ... so early to mid-ish second.

Totally agree, good post. At 32 it will be his last chance for a big contract. Better to trade a guy a year too early than a year too late. There were a few who suggested on this forum that they should have traded Petry when he was having a big year "buy low, sell high" and that made a lot of sense.

... I believe if the Habs get the top pick this year, he might be able to play next season, and that would likely make them competitive again next season ...

Chasing the playoffs next season would (IMO) just be returning to the same hamster wheel they have been on for the last 29 years.

... Exactly, that's my reason why I wouldn't have traded him. They got rid of Dom and is their plan to suck for the next 3-5 years, so get rid of Toffoli because he goes against the doctrine of sucking? ...
I think the plan is to suck next season so that they have an opportunity to possibly get Bedard or Michkov ... then, start to rebuild around the youngsters and retained veterans the next year and hopefully take the first H&G shot at the playoffs three years from now ... but TT's contract expires before that "shot" ... and as was pointed out above by Tomh009, he will likely be the type of player that the habs should not then be signing ... he will be 32 years old in the spring of 2024 and likely looking for one last contract with money and term ... not the Habs ideal UFA target for the 24/25 season.
But arguments are just opinions ... nothing that can be proven

... Tough night for Primeau so far, 3-0 Syracuse and we're still in the first.
Maybe he needs some time in Trois Rivières to get his confidence back ... KIDDING ... playing behind a decimated AHL roster may feel a lot like most of his games with the Habs ...

In your context, you are correct, but it should override plans unless their long term plan is to get rid of players with cheap positive value contracts who show up in the playoffs and play good defensively and score. Those are not the type of players any team should get rid of at any cost, unless they are UFA's the next season and a team cant afford to resign them. However, that description doesnt describe Toffoli though...
They are the type of players that should be kept if you are trying for the playoffs ... but TT's contract likely expires before the Habs are really in that mode.

... (and the hate for Lecavalier i dont get, just because he spurned the Habs to stay with Tampa till he was washed up, should blame Hughes more for that shouldnt one?)
Per the press conference, VL says in 2008 he OK'd a trade to Montreal but the owners/teams couldn't work things out ... and as a UFA he picked Philly because Laviolette won him over (ironic that Mike was dumped three games into VL's first year with the Flyers) ... just sharing, not saying

Veteran leadership for the re-build?
😉 -
As was raised during the press conference, this appears to be VL dripping his toe into the ocean of NHL management, to decide whether he wants to wade in deeper as his children grow up (I believe he said his youngest is 8).

Pitlick is nothing more than a 4th liner and he may not even be that.
A one year deal at league minimum would be fine as we likely are tanking again next season. But multiple years and significant money? No thank you.
If Bergie was here he might be one of "his guys" ... but I agree with you.

I'll say it will be more than OK:
streak, streak, streak! streak, streak, streak! streak, streak, streak! streak, streak, streak!
streak, streak, streak! streak, streak, streak! streak, streak, streak! streak, streak, streak!
I'm OK with one more ... just for your sake ... after that, no need to climb the standings ... just play well and win the odd game.

I agree with this.
Is it true that he won’t actually come to Montreal. He would only accept the offer if he can live in Florida?
I've seen that in several places (of course they could all be referencing an unconfirmed report) ... would indicate to me that he likely will not fill a core management position.

... Toffoli might have got 3-5 goals before the trade deadline, and if that had happened, would you still trade him? I certainly wouldn't ...
In the hypothetical ... short-term success should never override long-term plans ... once, for whatever reason, H&G decided Toffoli was tradable a run of success for a few games is no reason to change their mind.

I don't see that it would be a problem at all for the Habs to eat 50%, it's only for 1 year, would make the deal easier to make.
Agreed ... only for this season, really the remainder of this season, leaves full flexibility going forward

Good to see he's at least close to returning. At least one of Poulin or Primeau are among the players in COVID protocol.
Have no particular hopes for him but he has seemed to be a "good soldier" ... the type of person that every team needs on their AHL team ... whether or not his goaltending keeps him there (AHL not Laval) is another question

... That is why I wanted Madden jr. More than Hughes ...
He was one of my favourites as well ... but sadly he was never available ... it will be interesting to see if he stays in Anaheim despite not getting the GM's position ... if he does, I then have doubts he would ever have been the right guy for the Habs.

Alzner's buyout drops from $1,958,333 to $833,333 for the next two seasons, but it is still there.

In terms of trading Allen, is that even wise?
We don’t know with certainty that Carey Price will play again. Even if he does, we don’t know how durable or effective he will be. And even before this latest injury, Price-Montembault would have been a reversion to the terrible pattern of the pre-Allen era, where Price has to play 65 games because the other guy can’t be trusted. Price is too old and too broken-down to be able to do that.
Folks will say “who cares? It’s a rebuild.” But we also want our young players to develop confidence and the belief that their team can compete. Sabotage a team with bad goaltending and you risk undermining the “winning culture” that Hugh-Gort are trying to build. I’d suggests that we want a configuration in net that is at least average. I’m not sure Carey Price and a C-grade goalie can do that.
The counterbalance to that is that the Habs only have him for one more season ... Jake, Frederik Andersen and Semyon Varlamov are likely the top UFA goalies summer after next and Allen will be the youngest of the three (32 vs 33 vs 35) ... no guarantee they will be able to keep him around ... but could make more sense to look at him as 2023 deadline trade bait.

Don'y know whether they should, but:
Brett Stapley dreams of an offer from the Canadiens - TVA Sports (www-tvasports-ca.translate.goog)
" ... Stapley's profile is interesting. The right-handed center player shows a lot of creativity on the ice. He likes to set traps for the opposition and his play patterns are difficult for defenders to read.
He's a very cerebral player," noted his head coach at the University of Denver, David Carle. He's faster than he looks and he's good on his edges. With the puck, he can throw opposing players off balance and make them look bad. When he moves his feet, he is quite dynamic in the offensive zone and in the transition phases ..."
In case the translated link doesn't work: the original TVA article is here
He showed slightly less offence than Jake Evans in his first two years, about the same in the third and is on pace to slightly exceed Jake this season ... at very least would seem like a good signing as as bottom 6 centre depth for one of the 25 open contract slots for 22/23.
