  1. Important for D&D to be skating regularly by the end of the season in order for them to have a normal summer preparing for training camp ... with Allen gone, White could come off IR at any time without causing a roster issue.

Indeed. Monty was an unproven commodity and Primeau was nothing. You don’t facilitate a rebuild by having your team get shelled night after night; young D need to feel that not every mistake equals a goal. So I think there is some “retconning” going on regarding the Allen deal, perhaps reflecting the Tanquiste mentality that it’s just great to lose every game 8-1. 🤷‍♂️ Anyhow, true to form Hughes did nothing to jeopardize our Cup window so even if the contract was bad, no harm done.

Agreed ... the contract is only "bad" in retrospect because Montembeault emerged as an NHL goalie, otherwise not re-signing Allen would have been a disaster ... although we likely would have gotten Bedard.

Seems like Vegas is not too worried about next year LOL  Have to sign Hannifin, Hertl at 8.1M.   They are going for it this year.

Before adding Hertl, Vegas only have 15 players from their NHL roster signed for next season and have $15.7M in cap space ... Hertl will eat up $6.75412M of that but also means they only have 6-7 spots to fill ... expect it means Marchessault isn't re-signed.

Im glad they chose Primeau as the backup over Allen.

He may be moved later but for now bet on the youth.

I-M-O Primeau needs to get at least 8 games the rest of the way for Hughes to know whether they need to find a backup this summer or can plan on Cayden as the backup.

Happy for Allen that he gets to play more regularly.

Bottom Six Minutes: Joshua Roy is catching fire - Habs Eyes on the Prize

So Roy will be loaned to Laval today "on paper' and then recalled tomorrow? Is that correct.

The ONLY way I don't see him recalled is if Hughes somehow manages to trade Allen but is required to take back a couple of NHL contracts and needs the roster spot ... and even then, they may just have to work through opening a roster spot for Roy ... options include waiving one of the new guys, sending down RHP* or even hoping Ylonen wouldn't get claimed on waivers.

    * - Since RHP is also waiver exempt I wonder whether they might paper him down as well ... however, each "paper demotion" uses up one of the four non-emergency post-deadline recalls if/when the player is recalled to the Habs ... that limits non-emergency roster flexibility the rest of the season.

Barron has not settled in LVL since the demotion. He is playing the same way that got him demoted. Some flashes when he tries to generate offense but not great defending.

That has always been the concern with him ... and he is starting to get to the age (23 early next season) that the shine starts to wear off "potential", even for defencemen who do tend to "bloom" later.

  7. Thus far, if I was a Laffs fan, I would be pissed that Treliving thinks two 6/7 defencemen (unless Joel has found a time machine back to "the playoff run") and a BIG, 4th-yr university defencemen (who didn't get a whisper, that I could find, on any of Carolina's "top prospects" lists) can have any real impact on their defence's playoff performance.

Tough night for Slaf, whole first line looked out of sorts and not in sync.

    Slaf looked lazy tonight.

He has been taking a lot of "treatment days" recently ... maybe he needs to sit a few games?

Were players focused on trade deadline, not prepared? Did coaches not make necessary adjustments?  Habs looked out matched overall, was hard to watch.

Realistically, the Habs are a bottom-10 team and the Hurricanes are a top-10 team ... Montreal can't "play up" to the level of better teams every game ... didn't help that Andersen was sharp for his first game since November 2nd, without even a tune-up in the AHL that I could see.

Dubas is in a tough spot.

Don't have a lot of sympathy ... it is exactly the situation he should have known he was getting into last summer, and one on which he doubled down by trading for Karlsson ... after this season, they have 3-yrs of EK, 4-yrs of Letang, 2-yrs of Malkin and pending 2025 UFA Crosby ... they will have almost $12M in cap space this summer but not certain that can be used to get one of the oldest teams in the league back to the playoffs.

I expect something from Tampa tomorrow, the Islanders have almost caught them for the last wild card spot and they have a couple games in hand. Missing the playoffs is not an option as they wouldn't even benefit from having a decent 1st round pick as they have given them up for the next couple years.  But they also don't have much in the way of draft capital to give up for anything. They are in a tough spot.

    Something more?
They picked up Duclair last night.

The reputation of doing right by the players is more of a Gainey, Bergevin thing than HughGort.

The current crew is doing right by the rebuild and it is all business

While the primary focus is the rebuild, I disagree that "doing right by the player" is not also part of the Hughes ethos ... for example, as Habs Fan in Edmonton said above, he traded for Petry knowing Jeff didn't want to be here and JP ended up in Detroit (for a "body" and a 2025 4th), where he wanted to be, not necessarily for the best return ... Monahan apparently had a say in where he went despite not having a NTC ... and at the start of the season, it was intimated that if Allen were traded he would have a say in where he went beyond his 7-team NTC.

I agree, too many guys with term and Pearson is not desirable with his cap hit.  But you never, would like to be pleasantly surprised. Was happy with the Monahan trade and that was the big one, glad he stayed healthy.

With my BOLD PREDICTION 2:59 trade of Allen to Colorado for Johansen off the table (unless Flyers want to pay to dispose of Ryan) ... I'll replace it with Hughes uses his last retention slot to move Pearson at 2:59 if he has found no other use for it by then ... the purpose being to reinforce Habs' reputation of "doing right" by veterans ... I could also see him looking to pick up a "NHLer already in the AHL, or two" to help the Rocket, especially if they decide to keep Roy up with the Habs for the rest of the season.

I am very surprised Tampa is taking 25% of Henrique's cap hit for a 4th round pick. I thought Tampa would be a buyer but maybe not as they are using up cap space for nothing that will help them this year.

With Sergachev on LTIR, TBL still has $5,927,083 in cap space ... more than enough for David Savard ...

... I tend to think that there was likely some semi-illegal interference by Waddell and his Fins ...

Nothing is illegal if it happened over the summer ... The fact it took him til August to sign one when he could have signed 6 weeks earlier, suggests the opposite, there was no illegal tampering.

My belief is that KK/his agent/Dundon/Waddell circumvented the CBA by signing a one-year RFA contract, but had agreed to the terms of the subsequent 8-year deal before the offer sheet was signed ... the agreement avoided KK being due a $6.1M qualifying offer in the summer of 2022, but made the offer sheet harder for MB to match by being artificially inflated ... AND ... allowed the second (total) contract AAV to be lower by making the actual length 9 years, two more than could have been provided in an offer sheet.
