If he were on a $2M contract for 2-3 years, there would be teams that would be happy to give it a shot, but not with the deal Waddell gave him.

And if Carolina takes the long-term but realistically low-cost buyout for a team that is never/rarely near the ceiling then there will be teams lining up to offer a short-term "show me" contract ... unlike many, if the Habs can dispose of Dvorak I would have no issue with Hughes being one of those GMs ... KK's issues were with the previous management team and he (his agent) exploited, to his/their advantage, an issue created by that management team offer-sheeting Aho.

We will turn you into a believer…Habs are taking a wildcard spot next season. Dach’s body willing

That is still a 20+ point jump ... I expect them to be in the wildcard chase next season but not close enough to make the eventual playoff teams too nervous.

Damn I thought RHP was ready to go

Expect he is close, but they may want to drag it out a couple/few days if they have a trade(s) in the works ... HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE ... if another team wants Armia, Pearson or (in my dreams) Anderson and the return doesn't include an NHL forward then RHP can just slide in and fill the roster spot.

  4. POTENTIALLY the Habs will have more young defencemen than they need, whether or not they draft a D with their first pick this year ... but I don't think HuGo will pre-determine which to trade ... I-M-O they should decide who is as close to untouchable as possible (NOBODY is 100% "untouchable") and then either select a player to target in a trade and put together a package including a "touchable" defenceman(men) ... OR ... you let other GMs know that you are inviting offers for the "touchable" defencemen and see what offer is best for the Habs ... and, it may ***not*** be purely who brings the best player in return as they have to factor in the value of retaining the D not traded ... my equation is who you get PLUS who you get to keep.

I'm not 100% sure it's valid to point to Slick Nick's linemates. He's played a lot with CC and a lot with Slaf. Those are quality linemates. Besides, has Pettersson benefitted from stupendous linemates every single night? His linemates over the last two, 100-point seasons have included names such as Hoglaander, Conor Garland, and Ilya Podkolzin (now in the minors). Not to slag Suzuki, just to say that I don't think this excuse holds too much water.

Agreed ... Suzuki is becoming an elite two-way 1C ... but Pettersson is an ELITE offensive 1C.

No doubt they see themselves very much like Yzerman's Wings were before they finally won: a strong team that kept falling short in the playoffs but eventually got there.

95/96 Wings had Konstantinov, Fetisov, Lidstrom and Coffey as its D core ... 96/97 lost Coffey but had the rest ... 2000/01 had Fischer, Duchesne,  Chelios and Lidstrom ... don't see that level of defence core on the Leafs.

They could offer a 1st from another year or one of their top prospects.  And if that guaranteed winning a cup I am sure they would do it in a heartbeat. But a GM also has to think about the future and the Leafs have traded away so many picks that I don't blame Treliving for being a little cautious.

No trade EVER guarantees a championship; by that logic there would never be any deadline deals.

Being 2nd best GF/Gm and 20th in GA/Gm this season, and going into the playoffs with a WEAK defence corps and mediocre goaltending isn't likely a winning formula.

I have to wonder how long a GM who has never won a Cup, and a Team President who has made the second round once in 9 full seasons, can survive on "the future".

I would rather keep Caufield.  Keep Caufield and Pettersson on different line as they’re both goal scorers.  In theory it should spread out scoring and give Caufield easier opponents.

I don’t think Guhle and Caufield for Pettersson is a fair trade.  Vancouver would definitely have to sweeten the pot some to get that to work.

You think VAN would have to add something of value along with Pettersson?

They don't have much choice unless they want to trade a 1st round pick and their 1st rounder from 25 is already gone. No 2nd round picks to trade.

If they were SERIOUS about improving their team for this season they could offer this year or 2026 first, or dangle Nicholas Robertson, Knies, Fraser Minten or Easton Cowan ... to re-purpose a classic, you can't get silk purses by offering sow's ears.

Gallagher not at practice today, but RHP is:

Assuming Gallagher is on a "therapy day" ... does Roy go back to help Laval, do Pezzetta or Ylonen go on waivers, or is there a trade in which one more player goes "out" than comes "back"?

I can think of one example where the Habs did move up in the draft.  In 2010 they moved up 5 spots from 27 to 22 to draft Jarred Tinordi. It cost them a 2nd round pick and they also got a 4th round pick back. It didn't turn out great for them but Tinordi is still around.

Not certain that 14 drafts ago counts as recent ... or that 27-to-22 is really the context that is being suggested.

... if the Habs really were shopping him around, he would be subject of pretty hot rumours ...

I seriously doubt Hughes would be "shopping" Matheson, but I could see teams calling about him ... he would be a "three-run rental" as he is signed through 25/26 ... but teams like - FOR EXAMPLE - the Leafs (only two D signed for next season), Vegas (36 yr-old Alec Martinez on an expiring, higher AAV, contract) or VAN (with pending UFAs like Zadorov and Cole) might well be interested in a "hockey trade" and try to figure out how to make the cap work this season ... but I expect they would have to overwhelm Hughes with an offer.

    I agree With this

Plenty of NHL management experience ... but ZERO experience as a GM ... pretty much ANY candidate for an NHL GM job has lots of "management" experience, so I tend to see Davidson as looking for someone who also has experience as a GM ... my *****GUESS***** is still Gorton ... but even if Molson agrees to release him from his contract, I doubt that would ever happen until after the draft, maybe even until mid-July when the early stages of free agency are done ... unless, Davidson is willing to trade their first-rounder (or a TOP youngster/prospect) as part of a deal to get Molson to release Gorton ... not very likely ... unless, having lost confidence in Kekalainen they also don't have confidence in the scouting team he assembled.

Kaskisuo is week-to-week with a lower-body injury.  Condotta isn't with the team on the road with the pending birth of his child.

Guess the options are Strauss Mann "come on down ... err ... southwest" or conditioning stints for Primeau and/or Allen to see how Kaskiuo's situation evolves ... Mann obviously is the more likely option.

I think there's a bigger market for him than many think.  I'm not saying he has top-end value but I think there are some teams who would do a player-player swap.  Is someone on a similar contract who's also underachieving who might be a better fit with this style a good enough return to move Anderson now?

    For me ... yes

If he doesn't "rebound" next year his value will only fall ... even a better but poor season could reduce his trade value.

If they can get rid of him for a player more "useful" for the remaining years of his contract (ideally fewer) then *** I *** would make the deal in a split second.

I think the recent results and how they make the whole season look a lot like last year suggest that this isnt a playoff team next year either

I agree ... I don't expect them to be a playoff team next season ... but if healthy I expect them to be in the wildcard race most of the season.

  17. 1 hour ago, Habs Fan in Edmonton said:

Neither is Gallagher. How do you propose getting rid of him?

I don't ... I-M-O he would be harder to move than Anderson; unless Bergevin gets a GM job ... unless they decide to buy him out, I expect him to be a ridiculously overpaid 3/4th liner next season and a 4th liner for the final two years of his contract ... unless he decides to request termination (unlikely).

We have been without Dach, Newhook, Dvorak and many others but including Monahan that is FOUR capable centres that were gone.

Good post, but I-M-O a bit premature to designate Newhook as a "capable centre" ... some would argue that Dvorak is at best average, not capable (I lean towards agreeing).
