For Stamkos I'm thinking he could be the offense version of David Savard along with a ton of playoff success (been there, got the t-shirt) for when Montreal makes the playoffs next year.

For Utah, most of the Montreal D are an immediate upgrade over anyone on their roster.  I'm thinking the Price dead money would be better spent on a serious offer to Guentzal.

I think we all understood what you wanted to do ... the question isn't why the Habs might want Stamkos or Guentzal ... it is why would they want to join a team that is still in a rebuild, that may or may not challenge for a wildcard next season (especially Stamkos, who turns 35-yrs-old on July 2nd, so better sign him July 1st) ... and ... why would Utah want to lock themselves into the absolute lack of salary cap flexibility that comes with going into LTIR, and spend the extra $15M in real money over the next two seasons ... I expect they will be spending their $43M in cap space to try to make a BIG move up the standings next season.

  2. In hockey terms the BBs are I-M-O the far greater rival ... but I don't have to put up with nearly as many obnoxious BBs fans if they win ... AND ... I don't have to put up with having their win stuffed down my throat by Boston media the way I/we will have to live with media from the centre of the universe crowing like they've "won the Cup ten years in a row" if they win in the first round ... the issue for me is less hockey-related and simply TORONTO-related.

are you saying that there is a chance of trading a "crown jewel" (if I take out the double negative), or with the qualifier "necessarily", that it is necessary that he trades a "corwn jewel" at a higher point?

IMHO, there is no rush to move any of the young Ds before the return for Savard is maximized. Then, a decision on any of the prospects will be easier to take with more games to base a decision on.

I was responding to Tom009's comment that "Hughes will be looking for the advantage, for another GM that values one of our D higher than he does. And maybe has a F that he is giving up on."

I was suggesting that he would not necessarily be looking for a forward the other GM was "giving up on" .... but that would likely necessitate offering a better "package/player(s)", or a "crown jewel" as they were described.

While I agree there is no "rush" to move any of the young Ds, it may be necessary to avoid losing out on a player that Hughes et al identify they want/need ... waiting to have more games upon which to make a decision also runs the risk of allowing a player(s) to prove he/they is not worth as much as he is "now" ... management teams have to constantly assess their projection of where a player will "top out" and make their decisions accordingly.

That doesn't necessarily mean there is no chance of his trading a "crown jewel" ... just means his price point would be higher.

  5. An interesting point from "32" Thoughts: A note on every playoff series and award vote:

    39. Time to update the Nov. 1 stat. Avid readers know that I keep track of who is more than four points out of a playoff position after games on that date. This year, one of those teams (Edmonton) recovered, while Calgary, Pittsburgh and San Jose missed. In 82-game seasons during the salary-cap era, 10 of 70 teams in that hole made the playoffs. Can’t start poorly, kids.

Something to keep in mind going forward.

Sure I mean we are talking about bottom pairing Dmen here. I just think both fans and some media don’t appreciate how good these guys actually are - for bottom pairing guys

Relative to non-NHLers I agree ... I recall a former work colleague talking about some "goon" former NHLer joining his beer league ... turned out he looked like Gretzky in a pee-wee league once he stepped on the ice.

But the majority of fans are assessing players in terms of their NHL value ... a 6th defenceman is usually a 6th defenceman for good reason ... maybe a 4/5 on another team it its D is weak enough ... but with something lacking that prevents him from being anything more on a regular basis with an average or better team.

why? It's not an exhibition game. Many AHLers on the Rocket team are playing for contracts. If the Habs pushes to play the kids more than deserving Rocket veterans, I will be disappointed for them

To give the youngsters maximum exposure to allow them to best prepare for next season ... they are the future of the Habs far more than anyone whose getting another contract depends on how they play tomorrow ... not "nice", but it is the role for an AHL team.

I am sad for the kids, they deserved to continue playing.

I have posted it a few times over the season, I feel the Habs organization should have helped Laval better to allow them to compete in the playoffs.

With only a handful of open contract slots, two of which were needed to sign Hutson/Tuch and others perhaps to make deals around the draft, I am not certain how much more the Habs could have done ... sadly, injuries again necessitated some Rocket players playing more games with the Habs than might have been ideal.

  9. Mea culpa for the Locke analogy ... it was not intended as a direct analogy, but that was not made clear, poorly expressed ... just a memory of great stats that for reasons that I admit impacted his draft status never converted ... point was intended to be that we fans get excited by prospects' scoring numbers on their face value ... I agree it is the scouts' jobs to analyze their game and decide how well the "numbers" will translate.

Catton is a tremendously skilled player, fun to watch. If Catton was a couple inches taller and 20lbs heavier I think he would be top 2 for sure.

Catton will be a first rounder, likely top 15 and maybe top 10.  He has the skating and intelligence to get by.

Locke (for all his faults) was also a tremendously skilled junior (even AHL) player who was fun to watch (again, not trying to suggest any direct equivalency) ... but Catton isn't two inches and twenty pounds heavier, and may or may not ever be ... I just don't know if I feel comfortable considering him at #5 ... of course, he may "kick in the door" for consideration with an outstanding performance at the upcoming IIHF-U18s.

I guess i'm curious if they will 'wait and see' in training camp and who takes the spot...

or try and trade guys before that when their value may be higher...

I expect the most likely time for any trade will be at, leading up to, the draft or shortly after the initial UFA "excitement".

Seeing some funny habs proposals floating around

    Barron, Justin [RFA Rights]
    Dvorak, Christian
    Kovacevic, Johnathan
    2024 1st round pick (WPG)

    for....

    Trevor Zegras

    🤣

I guess this is the current iteration of the Halak/Ryder combo

Even worse ... many fans hesitated about trading either of those two ... this is the "who am I willing to give up without really having to think about it" package.

Dvorak is overpaid and injury-prone (missed 52 this year, 18 last, before that 26, 26, 12 and 60, after a pair of initial 78 game seasons), Kovacevic is at best a nice 6/7/8 RHD, Barron is a thus-far borderline NHL prospect and Winnipeg's pick is likely in the last 5-6 of the first round ... and they are suggesting trading that package to a team that already has a plethora of young defencemen.

It shows you the jump between these leagues and the NHL.

The swedish league is a top 4 league in the world (NHL, AHL, and then either SHL or KHL).... but its still a massive jump to the NHL.

Yes Brendan Davidson, a journeyman 7th/8th D in the NHL is a top pairing guy in the SHL.

Very true ... but it also doesn't mean that he couldn't have passed on to Kapanen some "tips and tricks" that allowed Davidson to earn a living for 4 NHL seasons, parts of 3 others, and 2 more in the AHL), in the NHL.

Impressive #s and offense is what Habs lack... just saying.

As always, with soooooo mnay players, the question is whether the #s will translate to the NHL.

After watching his junior career I was so pumped when the habs got Corey Locke in the 4th round of the 2003 after his CHL Player of the year and Top Scorer Awards (Regular Season: 66 gms, 63 g, 88 a, 151 pts; Playoffs: 46 gms, 23 gms, 19 g, 19 a, 38 pts) ... GREAT AHL player ... 9 gms, 0 g, 1 a ... albeit Locke was smaller.

That is why NHL scouts/GMs get well-paid.

    25 Henry Mews

    31 Henry Mews.

He has one player drafted twice.

At least he isn't drafting a dead player.

In the 1995 Las Vegas Posse dispersal draft, the Ottawa Rough Riders selected defensive end Derrell Robertson in the fifth round, only to discover that he had passed away in a car crash roughly five months earlier ... a year later, the Montreal Alouettes selected defensive end James Eggink in the fifth round of the Canadian college draft in 1996; after the draft a Concordia University football coach noticed Eggink's selection and called the Montreal Alouettes to inform them that Eggink had passed away from cancer a number of months prior.

Savard Will implode in his old age like Weber.

I hope they trade him at the next deadline to improve the team.

Weber was clutch in that Cup Final run ... his subsequent "implosion" was entirely injury related ... I see Savard as more a Hal Gill who managed to play, admittedly in declining numbers of games, until he was 39.

Deadline deals are almost always for draft picks or recently drafted players who are a couple of years away from the NHL ... is that worth more than the veteran support that Savard can provide the youngsters, especially the RHD, as they break in?
