Didn't Tallon also make a terrible hash of the Vegas expansion draft - basically handing them Marchessault and Smith? If I were (God forbid) a Panthers fan, I'd never forgive him that one...

Yeah, he was one of several GMs that mismanaged the protection list concept (in fairness, they were all rookies) ... fo some reason Florida went for 8 skaters rather than 7F and 3D and protected defencemen Keith Yandle and Aaron Ekblad (as was expected) but also Mark Pysyk and Alex Petrovic ... I also recall there being some talk of them not believing Marsasault was really a 30 goal scorer (as he had just done fo the first time at age 26 after 8 goals in 49 games over three seasons with CBJ and TBL) and Smith's production had been a yoyo (20g - 13g - 25g - 15g), with the second dip coming after the Panthers signed him to a 5yr @ $5M the previous summer ... it didn't work out but there were other factors at play.

Two of the reasons I would like Tallon onboard are (a) he would be a hard voice for Bergevin to ignore given his many years as a GM, and status as Bergevin's former boss, and (b) if needed, he is a potential GM replacement; coming onboard would allow him to get a good look at the players and the administration.

Not even similar and you know what he means.

Those 'supposed' Hab fans cheering for loss, when playoffs was a distinct possibility doesnt sit well with me neither.

    :gohabsgo:

    (1) LOVE the "gif" ... will be thinking of it all game long

    (2) Things other fans have advocated did not always "sit well" with me but I respect that everyone's entitles to an opinion as to what is best for the team.

I think it’s because those fans were cheering for he Habs to lose.

Can we please get over the argument about The Pick? I think Tanking is dumb, but I'm sure even enthusiastic Tankists will get behind the team, especially now that we know the Habs would not have gotten the #1 pick...

I was but then was told we "tankers" are not allowed to watch and get behind them because we are not "real" fans

Everyone wants the 1st overall pick.

    I never thought of that ... D'Oh

In context, given the choice the "anti-tankers" were cheering for the win rather than the chance at the #1 pick; the reverse of the espoused logic that I as a (despite what some may think) Habs fan should not be allowed to watch these games.

    So ill go with

    Giroux  Couturier  Voracek.   1.96

    Laughton Hayes Konecny.     3.29

    VanRiems Grant Aube-Kubel  2.73

    Farabee Thompson Pitlick.     1.31

    Provorov Niskanen

    Sanheim Myers

    Gostisbehere Braun

    Hart

Inserted above each lines' total regular season goals/60 minutes (to balance out for games played) ... the Hayes line is the most dangerous offensively ... and given Hayes' size I expect Julien will want Danault on Kevin ... I would expect he would want Suzuki on Couturier and KK on Grant, despite the "Grant line" having the better numbers

With last change (and ignoring the likely preference every team has to play any of their top three against the opponent's 4th line) I expect Vigneault would like to have Hayes on KK as his is the least defensively oriented of the Habs top 3 lines as much as possible ... might that lead Julien to sometimes flip where we expect Danault and KK to play ... giving Drouin a more defensive centre and KK more defensive wingers?  Hope not as Suzuki and KK versus Hays and Coutrier would be great challenge for the youngsters to take on.

I don't know if I'm just on a Habs high, but that Flyers lineup on paper doesn't seem as intimidating as it should.

Also I hope that anyone that wanted a series loss against Pittsburgh doesn't tune into these games because they don't deserve to enjoy this.

If Pittsburgh won and Habs got Lafreniere I wouldn't have suggested you not be allowed to watch him because you didn't want the pick.

What do you mean?? You can’t have refs deciding the game in OT can you by enforcing the rule book?  That would be so bush league! 🙄

Don Cherry ... is that you?

    LOL
    😉 😇

Totally agree (assuming I've "read" your post properly) ... the other one that drives me nuts is "they" got X more PPs than "us" ... not the refs job to balance PPs by making four ticky-tac hooking calls to offset four beheadings with sticks.

Hmmm, I don't know what Mellanby's specific responsibilities or contributions are but I do expect that losing him would not be a good thing.

This summer was his 6th season as A/GM ... sometimes new blood is needed to keep things fresh ...

Ron Hextall rumoured to be one of the frontrunners ... he basically built the Flyers ... but Mellanby would be an interesting choice from the habs perspective ... if the owners mandate changes, especially cost-saving, he would be familiar with Habs roster/prospects and might have some "favourites" that would draw more value from him than other teams.

It would also open a spot for Dale Tallon on the management team ... his contract was set to expire at the end of the season, so he doesn't have the usual "paid year(s) off" option ... he basically built the Hawks Cup teams, but lost that job after his staff messed out sending out qualifying offers to several RFAs ... did a decent job with Panthers, except perhaps  the terrible (IMO)  Bobrovsky contract.

... As for Caufield once again, there’s no way to say anything outside of “we can just wait and see” because from my end, I am certain he’s going to be a really good player for us, and I don’t say that about just any prospect. In fact, Subban would probably be the last time I felt similarly about one of our drafted players, and he was drafted in the second round.

Hope you are right ... Habs need elite goal scoring

You have to bring that up. Last time we had the #1 pick from astute trading and Friggin Grundman!  Who knows, if we picked Savard, maybe we wouldn’t have made the idiotic deal to get him 12 years too late for Chelios. Grundman followed the #1 pick strikeout with the Langway trade.

Grundman was IMO terrible, but in fairness Langway wanted out

    PS:

    1) Minnesota fans (who have the 9th pick) are talking about how they like a lot of players around the 15 mark (because they could get that pick from Pittsburgh)

    2) We just drafted Cole Caufield 15th overall

    (1) Every team says the like players around their pick ... and are ALWAYS astounded that the player they draft was still available

    (2) Caufield, for all his promise, remains very much an unknown ... teams had reasons for not drafting him ... some may have been because of need, but some were undoubtedly concerns about whether his obvious skill will transfer to the NHL ... as an aside, there is talk that if the Big Ten delays their hockey season into 2021 that Cole ***might*** consider heading to Sault Ste-Marie (or maybe trying to get them to deal him to a team he likes better) ... that might well be good for him

I’d be willing to take that on if we cost was low and maybe Philly even retains some salary.

Retained salary means the Habs have to give up more to get him, so ***IF*** MB looks to trade for The Ghost he's better off taking on all $4.5 if possible .

A factor may be the fate of Karl Alzner ... a buyout is (IMO) not feasible as he would take up $3,958,333, $1,958,333, $833,333 and $833,333 on the cap for the next four seasons ... but the next two seasons Karl offers $1.625 and $1.125 of "free" cap space (because his actual salary drops) ... that might help to trade him at a reasonable "cost" ... The Ghost would then add only $950K to the cap compared to burying Alzner in the AHL ... even better, but highly unlikely is Alzner pulling a Pleks and asking to void his contract ...I believe I recall reading that KA said he feels he can still play in the NHL; in fairness, IMO Alzner could find a NHL job if he became a free agent ... but at well below his current AAV ... however, with the pending drop in his actual (take home) salary, voiding would have less (but still not insignificant) impact on what he would earn ...

He’s a guy we should try and see if we can pickup in the offseason. - not sure what the flyers cap situation is, but would be good pickup if cheap.  I’d be reluctant to give up to many assets, unless it’s another Dman that we don’t really have room for, since I doubt if we can protect too many in the expansion draft.  Weber is a given, Petry, we don’t need to sign until after the draft, so don’t need to protect him. That leaves protecting  2 of Mete, chariot and Jullsen.  I don’t think brook or fleury need to be protected and Romanov definitely shouldn’t need to be. That leaves exposing kulak and Alzner and hope Seattle wants the veteran character type.

There has been a long-rumoured (i.e., once an actual rumour, once and then repeated ad nauseam) offer from the Flyers of The Ghost for Byron that MB supposedly refused.

IMO Weber is only a "given" if he stays healthy (pro-rated 75 of 82 this past season) ... if he suffers another injury and misses a large chunk of games (24 in 18/19, 56 in 17/18) then it may not be quite so obvious ... and not certain the habs will want to let Petry come that close to free agency ... I expect he will be re-signed and protected ... 20/21 will be Fleury's second NHL season and Brook has yet to play an NHL game, so neither needs to be protected ... I see Mete as the likely "veteran" defenceman to be exposed (he need only play 19 games this season to meet the threshold)

I agree.  But the way I look at it now, next year we should be starting the season with Suzuki and KK as our top centres. I doubt if that would have happened if we didn’t play as well as we did.  I doubt we go any further, but I like the opportunity to see how Suzuki and KK perform when the other team is going to be more aware of them.  I just wished we’d also give Poehling a chance over Weise and also play one of the young Dmen over Ouellette.

That is "looking forward" thinking ... give Poehling game action instead of sitting in a suite ... but Julien is using the lineup that he thinks gives the team the best chance of winning ... even if almost anyone subbing in for Weise would likely have minimal impact on the results.

On defence I am less convinced ... not a real fan of Ouellette but grudgingly give him credit for his play ... he leads the Habs in Hits per 60 minutes, blocks/60, is 2nd in takeaways/60 and is only slightly worse than Weber (1.73/60) and Chiarot (1.83/60) but way better than Petry (3.46/60) in giveaways (Weber and Chiarot are decent comparable stylistically in that they generally just move the puck, not carry it or do anything fancy ... unlike Petry who is naturally expected to have more giveaways because he is asked to do much more with the puck) ... the "per 60 minutes" stats can't measure the quality of opposition, game situation, etc. ... but are worth something
