Philly's top six is what 'should' separate them from the Habs.

Hab forwards will need to finish more often than have been and a PPG or two would be a bonus.

What is this PPG of which you speak?

At this point, I wonder if they shouldn't try the guys that haven't been getting ANY time on the PP and see what happens ... and throw whatever "system" exists out the window ... if I counted correctly, the Habs had 12 power-plays against Pittsburgh and were credited with a grand total of 3 shots ...

Totally agree.  Pleks should have been traded 2 years earlier.  As for Bourque, seeeing him and reading about him in the Calgary papers made me hate the initial trade to acquire him and getting rid of him was one of MB’s better moves.

To make it worse, Camilleri was pulled mid-game to make the deal ... and not allowed to keep his Habs sweater ... bad deal from every angle.

... But what they didn't say and I didn't know was they where going to put the names in alphabetical. That makes the odds different, then if they just put the balls in all at once ...

I was hoping for a shot at #1 too ... but hopefully you are not serious.

So based on assumptions if the Habs would have been in the lottery the pick would of gone to Nashville. The NHL dropped the balls in alphabetical order so having Montreal in there pushes those teams behind them back a slot. The fifth dropped ball would have been Nashville instead of New York. Just another piece of mind showing the Habs would not have won it. Pittsburgh not winning also helps.

Now I haven't studied how the logo size on the ball would of messed with the weight or aerodynamics. Maybe pushed some balls ahead of others. I'll leave that to someone else 😜

Clearly the Rangers logo was pained with magnetic paint and the top of the tube magnetized when time came to ensure NYRs get the pick ... for YTV contract purposes
    😜

    Moving here from general thread

Off the top of Mr. Potato's head:

    1. Petry and Domi ($5.5M + $4M?$4.5M = $9.5M-to-$10M) to TO for Kapanen, Kerfoot and Nylander ($3.2M + $3.5M + $6.9M = $13.6M) and their 2020 1st round pick (if not Lafreniere)

    or

Petry,  Domi, Habs 1st and 2x Habs 2nd to TO for Kapanen, Nylander ($10.1M) and their 2020 1st round pick (if Lafreniere)

Wouldn't move Petry ... Weber might be an interesting option for TO but don't see Bergevin trading him ... I would target one of Kerfoot, Johnsson or Kapanen to add further scoring depth ... think a couple of them are likely to be moved to create cap space ...

A edited my proposal, switching Lehtonen for Nylander to match cap space.

Nylander is a great middle-6 winger that could play top line for the Habs and matches in value to what Petry brings. Petry makes TOR better.

Kapanen provides as a winger what we are expecting from Domi. Domi makes TOR better

Kerfoot would offset the value going to TOR and the 1st round pick provide the Habs top talent to improve its core down the road.

After a breakout (projected 37 goals for 82 hames) I think Nylander is at least a top 6 winger, if not first line.

Domi might have added value to TO based on scrapiness and pedigree. I'm not saying he'd bring back anything huge, just saying that there might be some sort of mutually beneficial trade to be struck there.

Undoubtedly he would ... but more for the fans than the management

    That's hog wash...

They have had trouble signing UFA players because they've been sh*t over the years. That coupled with the inability to bang out or make good on 1st rounders for 5/7 years created this vacuum of mediocrity. Draft well and create a winning atmosphere with promise of a contender. Only then will players line up to win a cup in la belle province.

Of course you cant compete with Stamkos wanting to stay in TB or Tavares wanting to go home to Toronto. But we will never be able to sign a Panarin when he has to guess who is C is going to be...

That may well be true ... and I hope it is ... it would be nice to have that option/opportunity ... but IMO it will take a couple of years of winning (and depending on how the playoffs go this season may or may not be a true start) to build that UFA interest ... meaning it won't be a tool for the near future to build the team needed around Price (33 next Sunday) and Weber (35 on Friday)

Looking at the concept ... Petry has a 15 team NTC so there is no guarantee he would agree to the deal ... plus I would rather re-sign Petry ... think Jeff's nect contract will likley be reasonable (he seems to very much like Montreal) and will likely be effective for at least another 5 years ... as for the return, I don't see Lehtonen as great value ... 26 yr-old "rookie" signed for 20/21 then a UFA next summer.

After shipping out a 2020 or 21 1st pick with Marleau also.

True ... I expect the Leafs will retain the 2020 pick even if they don't win the lottery as they would undoubtedly would not expect to have the chance to select in the top 16 next season

EDIT: Wasn't Laffs option ... it was 2020 protected if it was in the top 10 ... so Hurricanes get the pick ... MY BAD

why would domi and nylander make any sense at all? they need 3 defenders at the very least, 2 of which are top 4. I dont think Nylander gets you a top 3 defenceman alone. Maybe a younger soon to be top 3. Marner would though.

Plus they cant take salary back really unless its defensive salary.

Which would be why I said I don't see Nylander moving unless a defenceman is the return ... there is a difference between what I think MB might try and what I think is a reasonable/possible trade

The Habs are not in a position to trade Weber (no replacement anywhere in the system) and Gallagher will be the heart of the team until the day when he suddenly isn't. I expect Gally to crater relatively young, and Weber is 35 - neither likely has too many years left at their current level, while Tavares probably has a half-decade to go as an elite producer. But the trade would immediately make the Habs worse; it would likely only start to work in our favour after 2-3 years, toward the tail end of JT's contract. No thanks.

Agree about the importance/value of both Weber and Gallagher ... but they are also perhaps the classic example of whether it is better to trade a player too soon rather than too late ... but Tavares wouldn't be my target ***IF*** the Habs were to trade either ... personally I wouldn't even look at the Leafs, unless the #1 overall was PART of the return ... not a fan of Nylander (talented player, but someone close to me knows this father very well and fear the son may not have fallen far from the tree), Tavares has the NMC and Matthews isn't going anywhere ... Marner would be a nice "add", but is just a tad overpaid for my taste (not certain he is a 90+ points player without Tavares, Matthews and Nylander)

  13. 5 minutes ago, DON said:

Any team likely could use 2 players like Weber and Gallagher for a playoff run and Leafs maybe could do without 1 of their 3 elite forwards.

Is fantasy trade of course though and aint happening.

And not only because Bergevin unlikely to trade Price (unless Carey "demands" one ... from what we know of Carey it would be very polite and done in private) ... but Tavares has a full NMC ... if he agreed to waive it because of two disappointing seasons in TO then I wouldn't want him ... but Tavares, Suzuki and KK as a top trio of centres would be amazing (in theory).

BUT ... Tavares is the only of the Leafs "big guns" (maybe better described as reputed "big guns") with no-trade protection, let alone no movement ... so I expect Nylander and one of these three - Kerfoot/Johnsson/Kapanen - to be dealt to create cap space to improve their defence, not necessarily in one deal.

I could see Bergevin trying to swing a deal built around Domi and Nylander (or two of the "three") as the core pieces ... but while some combo of the "three" may be moved to create cap space I expect it would take a legit top 3 defenceman to get Nylander.

So who are we cheering on in the lottery?

    My Preference (in this order):

    1) Wild

    2) Jets

    3) Preds

While the other 5 I do not want to see win, the big no-no's are the Pens and the Leafs. Pens because it would always be said the Habs could of had Lafreniere. Leafs should be self explanatory.

    100% agree

... To note, we won the Pitt series without our top goalscorers Gally and Tatar registering a single tally (who would of thought) As well as our leading scorer of last year in Domi and even Armia. Also, Drouin managed a goal but was probably the weakest of the top 6. That will have to change if we are going to have success going forward.

Absolutely ... those two need to get going (hopefully Gallagher can heal up in the down time) ... but it wasn't just them ... Domi and Armia (3rd and 4th in goal scoring in the regular season) were blanked as well ... on the other hand, Philly won its games without any of their top 5 goal scorers from the season getting any either ... these teams are in VERY similar situations that way

.. draft well, manage your assets, play the UFA market and dont overpay on contracts in a cap world ...

I agree it is a valid approach ... however, I see it as difficult for the Habs to get top-end UFA talent (and retain any elite talent) without overpaying which as you point out is a no-no in the modern cap world ... making that model more challenging for them

It will be interesting to see how MB approaches the offseason ... there are some teams in cap trouble, but not certain the "payoff" to taking on a bad contract would be much of an upgrade on what the Habs already have in terms of the current roster, more likely to receive picks and/or a good prospect  ... having broken the silent-pact by making the Aho offer sheet, curious to see if he tries again ... will at least keep the board hoping
