I think if the habs take back some bad contracts like Neal and Koskinen along with Puljujarvi and a 1st for Price and Byron could work out good for both teams. We could then flip Neal to another team and eat some of his cap hit.

But i don't see Price going anywhere as long as Bergevin is GM.

Feel bad for Price and Weber as I would love them to win a cup.

So Puljujarvi (who has proven nothing) and a pick in the 20s, and two cap dumps for Price and Byron?  no thanks

I agree the return is light *** IF *** such a trade were made

But in fairness Koskinen is not a horrible contract (e.g., Ryan Kessler) to be dumped  ... he is a lower, mid-range NHL goalie who is a bit overpaid (by say $1-1.5M) at $4.5 million AAV for two more seasons ... he could be a good veteran transition partner for Primeau in 20/21 or 21/22

Neal is more difficult to assess ... he was horrible in 18/19 with Calgary (pro-rated 9 goals per 82 games) but bounced back with a pro-rated 28 goal season ... but it was with McDavid and Draisaitl ... so really more of a classic dump, especially with three years at $5.75 remaining ... so likely an expensive 3rd liner, if not a 4th liner for Habs ... but with $2-2.875 retained he could probably be moved on for some minor return.

If the Oilers beat Calgary a mid/late 20s draft pick is not enticing ... if they lose to Calgary they would pick first (AGAIN!?!?!?) or likely 16th  ... first would mean a deal gives the Habs Lafreniere and the 9th pick , so a reasonable good deal ... Oilers might still be tempted as losing to Calgary will be a disaster and it would likely mean Koskinen&Smith failed to come through ... at 16th or mid/late 20s I would also be looking for some combination of prospects Bouchard, Broberg, Benson and Lavoie.

But all hypothetical ... Bergevin unlikely to trade Price unless Carey asked (i.e, very quietly and politely demanded)

Edmonton with Price would be scary to watch. All they need is a goaltender like Price to put them over the top.

Price is playing like this could be his only opportunity for a cup run in Montreal for awhile.

Oilers have a tight cap situation ... but if Koskinen ($4.5 fro next 2 seasons) was included and the Habs retained some money it might work ... AND/OR ... they might have to look at taking on someone like Larson( who is down to 4th in TOI 5-on-5 ... 5th on the PK, and with no PP role) to make the cap situation work ... don't know what the carrot (return that they want) would be for the Habs ...

That's all we hear with this team if price, if price, if price, if price, if price. When are we going to get price help?

The habs are not going to empty the cupboard to get immediate help, so in my mind the question is whether Price will still be Price in 3-4 years when 5-6-7 of the youngsters in the pipeline are ready to make significant contributions ... OR ... whether he will be willing to wait that long ... it is a next summer topic, but I wouldn't be shocked if he decided that it would be nice to finish out his career where he and his family spent their summer ... in Washington State, his wife's home ... or, if not Seattle, at least somewhere closer to there (i.e., Colorado, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver)

  4. 37 minutes ago, Habsfan89 said:

... Also for those of you who think Price has no trade value look at these 2 playoff games. Any playoff team that needs a goaltender would love to have Price ...

I agree ... the issue with Price is his cap-hit ... most playoff teams that need a goaltender would have issues fitting him under their cap ...Habs would likely have to retain at least $3 million (maybe the full $5.25) ... but as I am a major re-tool advocate I could get behind that ... I won't quite call it a normal rebuild as the Habs already have some talented young players like KK & NS on the team ... Romanov, Fleury and Juulsen knocking on the door ... Caufield, Struble, Norlinder and Harris awaiting their chance ... I see these as potential top 6/top4 players ... not all will work out but the cupboard is not bare ... didn't mention Poehling or Evans as I am not certain they have top 6 potential but should be very good bottom 6 players (and the importance of that role can be underestimated)

Another element for the Habs that appears to be in midseason form...

They have been amongst the league's "best" for taking those ... guys coming on can be overanxious ... guys going off can lollygag ... or both ... whatever way, it is not something that shoukld happen as often as it has for a couple of seasons

Not by me he isnt, that was 4:52 of nail biting and wondering why in hell was he out there!:rastapop:

Not my ideal choice either ... but if he sits it has to be for someone Julien will trust for that much time on the PK if necessary ... Weber, Petry and Chiarot can only play so much time and Julien has shown he has absolutely no faith in Mete on the PK by playing him for all of 2 seconds "short-handed" (undoubtedly a change after a puck was cleared down the ice just before the penalty ended)

... Drafting is only one small element of the team’s future success. Suzuki was 13th overall, as an example, and here we are quarrelling about 9th vs 16th overall ...

At 9th the habs could have drafted Suzuki ... at 16th they couldn't have ... there are never any guarantees, but the higher the pick the more options a team has

Just is too bad Juulsen or Fleury arnt playing. Ouelette is scary and Weise made several soft and dumb plays with puck and feel bad for Domi to have a boat anchor on is line, when are better options in pressbox.

You know Malkin will not keep missing all his chances again and with a guy like him,  just have to hope to limit him to a point or two.

Ouellette is nothing more than a 4/6/7 defenceman ... but he is trusted to be on the PK (4:52) ... Mete was Ouellette's 5-on-5 partner and nothing else ... *** IF *** a change were made on defence I suspect he would be the one to sit

I agree about Weise but I suspect CJ likes his "physical presence" ... only Petry and Chiarot (6) had more hits that Dale (5) ... and his "playoff experience" ("all" 41 games of it)

Otto Leskinen has been loaned back to his old Finnish team to start next season.  He'll be recalled from that loan for training camp.

    http://www.habsworld.net/2020/08/habs-loan-otto-leskinen-to-kalpa-kuopio/

Expect a few of the guys not playing to follow, and maybe even some who are ... for anyone looking to fight for a job (or to move up the lineup) it is a great way to get a jump on training camp.

Ylonen is a perfect example ... due to injuries he only 12 games last and 13 the year before ... he not only needs the icetime to get his game back but also to create a more positive impression before training camp

Cool. I'll keep that in mind if they go on a run here and you show any excitement.

Feeling that the need to build for long-term success is more important than the immediate term, non-playoff games doesn't mean that I can't enjoy elements of those games ... for example, VERY happy with how KK and NS played ... bodes well

Okay so you tell those players that are giving it their all that you would rather they don't so that there is a small chance that they can draft a guy that might help them win a cup down the road.

I seen a video of them coming off the ice last night and I can confidently tell you they are going for wins, not draft picks.

NEVER said they wouldn't be going for the wins ... players and coaches always will ... and would never suggest asking/telling the players/coaches not to win ... just that my preference for an outcome is to not beat Pittsburgh ... whether the Habs end up drafting 1st (ideal) or 9th

  12. 57 minutes ago, Commandant said:

Let me be clear... If the team is eliminated from the playoffs, I'll cheer for losses and take the draft pick.  But if the wins are meaningful, then i want the wins.  Right now the wins are meaningful.  When the season stopped, I had given up on making the playoffs and was ready to embrace.

Also I'd like a source that MB didn't really want Suzuki.  He was the key to the trade by all accounts.  I mean the trade was Suzuki, a 2nd round pick, and Tatar.... at the time Tatar was a salary dump for the VGK as he was benched in the playoffs, a 2nd rounder is nothing special... so it was Suzuki who was the biggest piece in that deal.  I have a hard time believing he didn't really want him.  Of course he asked for Glass first (as Glass was the higher ranked prospect at the time), but I think the key to the trade was absolutely getting one of Glass/Suzuki, getting one of the two high-end centre prospects that the Knights had.   So I think... didn't Really want is kinda going too far.  The trade doesn't get made without one of those centres IMO.

Hard to find trade rumour discussions after a trade is made, best I could find is a post-trade assessment:

In swinging this deal, Golden Knights general manager George McPhee also was able to hold on to his No. 1 prospect, center Cody Glass, who was the 6th overall selection in 2017 by the club.

"Holding on" to Glass would indicate that Glass was the target ... what I recall from all the trade rumour reports from that summer is that what held up the trade until the eve of training camp was that MB was pushing for Glass, who at that time was the higher "rated" prospect ... (a) OBVIOUSLY very happy that MB had to "settle" for Suzuki, and (b) shows how much "ratings" can be worth sometimes ... although, in fairness to Glass, he missed 29 games of his last junior season, most/all (?) due to a knee injury ... almost three weeks in December 2019 because of a concussion ... almost several weeks in January(4th)/February (15th) 2020 with a knee injury that then recurred after only two games back (out for the "rest" of season).

Lafreniere is a more likely path to a Cup than getting past Pittsburgh

    1 hour ago, illWill said:

That argument is moot because it isn't like we automatically get him if we lose this series

NEVER said losing to Pittsburgh meant the Habs would draft draft Lafreniere (although it would guarantee the 9th puck in every round) ... I wasn't even comparing the CHANCES of beating Pittsburgh to the CHANCES of drafting Lafreniere

What I was saying was that we are unlikely to win the Cup if we beat Pittsburgh and that the odds are better of winning the right to draft Lafreniere ... and, that adding Lafreniere would move the Habs closer to being a Cup winner than would the chance to play a few playoff games (i.e., beating Pittsburgh)

Meh... i just cant cheer for my team to lose.  Im not built that way

Fair enough ... I was generally in that mode until the last year or two ... but I have simply lost patience, and confidence that this management team will ever deliver ... their two best youngsters are KK (when they could have had Thachuk or Hughes ... both the type of player the Habs have desperately lacked for years) and Suzuki (who MB didn't REALLY want in the Pacs trade) ... even small bits of success lets MB continue to sell HOPE ... that, like Houle, Savard, Gainey and Gauthier before him, will likely prove to be false

You cant just take out 1 season in a 5 year career and do averages. The average is what he does every season. ......You are what you are over large samples and large samples include both the good and the bad ...

You have to when assessing a player with ONE season so much better than his others ... averages inflate expectations ... especially with what is still a small sample size ... his inconsistent performances make an average useless.

    2 hours ago, Commandant said:

... That said hes 24 and not even on his prime so im not sure why 50 is the upper limit either.

In his prime hes likely a 55-60 point guy as he is likely to still progress from where he is to what hes at 26, 27, 28, 29.

Agreed that at 25 he's not yet in his prime ... but he is close ... 20/21 will tell a lot about what it is reasonable to expect from him each season

    Winning is fun.

Cheering to lose for a 12.5% chance at lafreniere... where is the fun in that.

Both routes are likely to end up short of the ultimate goal, but id rather enjoy the journey.

It is not just the 12.5% chance at Lafreniere but also the alternative of the Habs pick being 9th in every round instead of 16th, or worse.

I'd rather not end the journey as the habs have over the 25 seasons (not counting 2019-20) by missing the playoffs 10 times, first round loses 8 times, 2nd round loses 5 times ... only the two measly 3rd round (Conference Finals) loses really gave any hope of a Cup win ... since the last Cup, in one form or another, striving to "make the playoffs and then see" has been the mantra of the last five general managers ... not good enough IMO

  17. 40 minutes ago, Commandant said:

Guys Domi is a one season wonder, who is, and i quote "nothing more than a 30-40 point guy."

    Career stats

    52 points in 81 games...

38 points in 59 games (the only season he was actually between 30-40 is a season he missed by 2 points and was injured for 23 games)

    45 in 82

    72 in 82

44 in 71 (likely would have been over 50 in a full season)

So tell me again how he is a guy whose upper limit is 40 points.

It is wrong to say his upper limit is 40 points ... outside his career season he is a 48 points per 82 games scorer ... until he repeats the 70+ points I don't think it is reasonable to expect more than 45-50 points from him ... valuing/assessing a player based on his best season is why some insist on calling Galchenyuk a 30 goal scorer, despite the fact that in the rest of his career he scores at an 18 goals per 82 games pace ... it is also how some really bad contracts get signed
