"...Tweaking these things in small ways that make him more effective — teaching him how to blend fakes and look-offs into his passes, helping him learn to hide his intentions offensively, and more — is the way forward to unlocking 40- to 50-point upside. And that’s where Lane Hutson comes in."

Long-term, Reinbacher/HUTSON and Mailloux/Guhle seem to make sense ... then Xhekaj with Kovacevic/Barron/Harris/???

PTO does not prevent a player from signing an NHL contract with someone else, so he really would not lose anything by doing a PTO.

The issue would, I guess, be whether he feels he will get signed ... if yes, why risk a catastrophic injury that could impact those chances.

Assuming Saginaw takes this series, I'll be curious to see if Guindon joins Laval down the stretch.  I think he's on the bubble for getting signed to an ELC so getting even some practice time with the Rocket might be useful from an evaluation standpoint.

I assume you mean Guindon signing a PTO ... looking elsewhere, is Florian certain enough of getting an NHL contract that he would decline such an offer, or might he also want to "show his wares" if he is eliminated early enough to warrant an offer?

The discussion I was replying to was about potentially testing Ylonen for the rest of the season. not about the D choices for next season.

And St-Louis has given Ylonen minimal ice time when he has been playing, usually on the fourth line. Whether he is that bad or not, either way it sure doesn't look like St-Louis wants to give him a look in the middle six, whatever his rationale is. So, not much point in inserting him in the lineup now, I expect he'll be somewhere else next season, as much as we have a dearth of middle-six wingers.

I think that barring a trade this summer, the top 6 wings are set (CC, Slaf, Newhook and Roy) for next season ... drafting or trading for a top 6 winger pushes one of those down to the 3rd line ... then either of Gallagher or Anderson likely fill the other third line spot (:() or, absent a draftee/trade, at least one of them get a 3rd line spot ... but I-M-O even a solid final 13 games wouldn't convince me to PLAN on Ylonen being anything but a 4th line candidate ***if*** he gets qualified.

Fowler could instead enter the transfer portal or even go play in the CHL for a year where he could get 50+ starts.

I don't believe he was drafted in his OHL draft year so I assume he would be able to pick his team if he went that route ... it could be a real benefit to his development to get a HEAVY workload.

Mattheson may prove less disposable because of his borderline elite offence, at least in the short term.

Based on his offensive production the last two seasons in Montréal, Matheson may have the highest trade value of his career, making a trade perhaps more likely ... he is 16th in the NHL in Pts/Gm this season with the 4th lowest AAV in that group ...  it will depend on how sustainable HuGo believe his production is AND how they project the youngsters.

Fascinating backlog. Savard is gone next season and Kovicevic’s crest has fallen considerably since last year.

Kovacevic is signed, and I-M-O firmly embedded as the 6/7 for next season ... I would have no issue with extending him for a couple of years at up to a maximum of the bury-able AAV ($1.15 for 25/26) ... he fits the role, knows the team (players and coaches) and would not be difficult to move if necessary

I know, but given where MAilloux started at the begining of the season to now being a regular on the PK: he is still improving

My point was simply that offensive stats do little to prove his readiness for the NHL ... it will be how HuGo et al assess his defensive play.

This is a bold statement by the Rocket radio play by play announcer: comparing Mailloux to Subban’s rookie season

    but it is comparable

The DEFENCE is the difference ... it has always been the question with Mailloux ... although I am not a big fan of +/-, PK went from +46 to -8 on a Habs team with the 8th best GAA in his rookie season.

Was suggested that Hughes sign Guhle-Slafkovski to long term deals this summer.

I know extra little about contract/cap stuff, but maybe is a good idea?

It all depends upon what Guhle/Slafkovsky would ask for ... the concept is that as they have not yet fully established themselves they might accept less than they could ask for next summer if they have strong 24/25 seasons ... on the other hand, they might want to "gamble on themselves" and wait until their ELCs are complete ... but its worth at least asking.

Four to six weeks?  Why didn't they just say the rest of the season or do they still have hopes of making the playoffs?

He is eligible to join Laval, who still have a chance at the playoffs,

    Not for last couple weeks.

Healthy scratch maybe in the near future?

Even with Roy out, with Allen gone they do now have a "14th forward" who could slide in for a game or two without impacting Laval ... it could also be a prelude to Armia-ing him (i.e., "earn a roster spot or get waived" next training camp).

I prefer playing Anderson over Gallagher on the second line.

Armia has never successfully been a top-6 forward. He does great on a third line and that is where I would look to up Armia’s value.

I am not as adverse towards Anderson; he is a useful player if the coaching staff uses him to his strengths instead of re-inventing him… but I digress

Even when he was scoring, Anderson was always essentially a solo-act on whatever line he played ... but we all have (or have had) players in whom we have more faith than do others ... I-M-O, if Armia continues his decent play the rest of this season, he deserves to begin next season "ahead" of Anderson (even if they end up on the same line).

  14. 9 hours ago, alfredoh2009 said:

well, I am still hoping Roy wins that spot. Anderson is signed until 2027. Dach and Newhook play a fast aggressive game, from all the other options on wing, Anderson is there by default unless Roy is fully healed and wins that spot.

Dvorak and Armia are both UFAs after next season. I would play them together on the 3rd line and rotate a winger there. Anyone, whoever best helps them get points or be scored on less. That's the money line from which at least two will be traded at the deadline.

Evans can center the remainders and be an awesome 4th liner.

It would be great if Roy won the spot, or a legit top 6 winger was added, but I wouldn't saddle the second-line with Anderson by default ... the idea is to have a productive second-line to support the Suzuki line ... because Armia is a pending UFA and possible trade deadline chip I would look to raise his value and play him with Dach and Newhook before Anderson ... I might even play Gallagher there ahead of Anderson because at least he will bring effort and a willingness to go to the net ... Anderson has to earn his way up from the 3rd line and I-M-O even earn his right to not drop to the 4th line (or Laval) ... Evans remains a very good, and very expensive, 4C.

I'd say that Hughes hasn't drafted BPA yet  - thank god.  Wright was supposed to go #1.  Hughes isn't likely to start drafting BPA unless the Habs win the 1st overall pick.

I think Hughes has done exactly that ... BPA means the player that a team has ranked highest on their internal draft lists when their pick comes up, not the various "expert" rankings ... most (all?) teams rank their lists based on their projections of the players' pro potential (not just draft-year perromance), thus there is not absolute uniformity across those lists ... whether or not scouts, and management to a lesser degree (they also have responsibility for trades, free agents, contracts), keep their jobs depends on how well they rank the players
