I was looking for things from before Paquette was signed ...

    THW:

    $1M is a much more reasonable price than $1.65M, but I don't think he'll be a top-six centre, unless I'm badly mistaken.

He's insurance for the 4th line if Poehling has a bad camp. Otherwise he's the 13th forward.

Maybe on Day 2 the NHL should take an idea from speed chess (for those who have never heard of it) ...  teams should be allowed a fixed amount of time in total on the clock and once their clock expires they either forfeit their remaining pick(s) or (to be nicer) must give their selection within 15 seconds of the clock starting or forfeit that pick ... also ... time outs should be limited (2-3 max), but the team the drafting team is trading with can use one of their timeouts if they so choose (which would put pressure on them to complete the trade as fans would know they were trying to trade for the pick).

I like what the NFL does. If you don't get your pick in on time, the next team(s) can rush in and make their pick. I remember one year the Vikings were taking offers on their pick, but a trade with the Ravens did not get submitted on time, so the next team in line (who had been one of the teams trying to get the Vikings pick) rushed up and got the guy they wanted for free. I believe another team rushed in their pick in before the Vikings finally submitted their pick, as well.

So, do the Habs pick a 6'5" goaltender in the 6th or 7th round?

Didn't they have a really tall goalie a few years ago? I looked all over their AHL rosters the last 20 years and couldn't seem to find it. Not sure if I was somehow overlooking him or if he didn't exist.

Do folks think he would have been worth next season's first and a good prospect?

    Scored at a 38g/82gms last season ... RFA coming of a $5.2M contract ... UFA after 22-23.

Seems like a fair price to me, though I don't think another right hand forward would have been a good fit for us. Toffoli, Suzuki, Caufield, Anderson. We already very right heavy up front.

face that fact, [she] was out to make a buck out of it. And everyone who doesnt believe that is what she wants is nuts. She wand an apology $$.

What money? He's a 17 year old kid that might be making $75,000 in two or three years playing in the minors on an ELC.  She went to the police with the allegations and got justice. And she is absolutely right about a text apology not being enough. If he didn't say it to her face or at least over the phones then it is hard to believe that he is sorry for anything more than getting caught.

This wasn't some baseless allegation. He was convicted of a crime. Yes, some women use sex as a money grab. But assuming that every allegation against a "famous" guy is a money grab does nothing but empower such people to do bad things. It just lets them know that people won't (want to) believe it without proof. Look how many women had to come forward against Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, etc. before people started believing it wasn't just greedy women out for a payday?

If Philly and Columbus are swapping Voracek and Atkinson, there better be quite the incentive going to the Blue Jackets as well.

    It's a 1-for-1 trade.  That's surprising.

This is baffling. If you're going to rebuild, then sure, ship out Atkinson. But for Voracek? What the heck?!?!  You trade one of the few good players willing to sign long term for a similarly aged player with a bigger contract? The baffling moves continue.

I would feel differently about the situation if Mailloux violently assaulted a woman, like Hunt or Rice did.

I would hope so. I just brought them up to make the point that the majority of the fan base will quickly forgive him if he turns out to be a good player. There will be a token reminder every now and then, but largely it will be water under the bridge.

Unfortunately, even with best behaviour, it will never be enough for a big chunk of the fanbase. Hopefully we can see a example of rehabilitation without sweeping it under the rug.

Impressive interview, though, I can see why Bergy was willing to take this hit if he believed in the talent.

Let's be honest, if he is a legit NHL talent, by the time he is in the NHL making an impact, a big chunk of the fan base will have forgotten about it altogether or say something to the effect of "I don't like the guy, but he helps the team win, so go Habs!" As long as a player plays at a high level, most fans will overlook just about anything. Just watch the Kareem Hunt and Ray Rice videos. Rice was washed up and was thus blacklisted. But because he was still an elite talent, Kareem Hunt was snatched up an immediately and after an initial ruckus, that died down as soon as he started scoring touchdowns.

There's no evidence that that course of events would ensue, which is why it's the slippery slope fallacy.

The fact that he's been caught, undergone counselling, and publicly scrutinized would lead me to believe the likeliness of it ensuing is mitigated in this case.

Of course it is not a sure thing that that is how things would progress. I'm not saying that it's written in stone that anyone who does this is going to become a sexual predator. But, there is no denying that that type of progression is how many, many sexual assaults happen. Things start out consensual and the guy takes that initial consent as carte blanche to do whatever he wants.

I hope that you are right and I hope he does earn this second chance that he has already been handed. Hopefully has has learned the lesson early enough that he will actually change. Getting people to learn that anything sexual needs consent is incredibly important for our society.

When your significant other is actively mocking your teammate's wife for a miscarriage, you get a bit of a reputation by association.

I did some searching on this back when he was a free agent and I had a hard time finding anything about whether or not he stayed with that psycho. It sounded like he dumped her, but I couldn't find anything concrete. But given that he was run out of Ottawa, I'm guessing it wasn't something where he condemned her actions and dropped her immediately.

And that it wasn't too far from rape, which it is.

It's a slippery slope. The first few times, it's sharing a non-consensual picture. Then it's a video. Then it's not taking no for answer because you have to have something to show your buddies. The fact remains he did something sexual with a girl and not everything about it was consensual.

A puck bunny, 1 step removed from a band groupie. Please. If he wasn't a star player was she even if this situation? What does that tell you?

So groupies and puck bunnies deserve to be mistreated. Got it. Really enlightening thinking. You are incredibly naive if you don't think this kind of thing happens all the time. They have the law on the books for a reason. The only thing him being a "star" hockey player has to do with anything is how public the situation was.

Why would, for instance, arbitrarily sentencing him to a one year draft moratorium change anything?

To me, it would send the message that the league doesn't approve of such behavior. They can't suspend him, but not drafting him forces him to go through the whole process all over again. He goes from getting a good ELC with bonuses to risking having a bad season and tumbling down the draft board. It is a consequence that must be faced.

Aatu Raty is going to be an interesting name to watch for.  He went from a projected top-five pick a couple of years ago to out of the first round entirely.  How far will his drop be?

Poor dlbalr, in here trying to talk hockey in the draft thread.

What scares me is paying Savard 1st or 2nd pairing money (like Alzner), when he should only be considered a bottom bottom pairing option (given our current D).

if we can get him cheap, as a bottom pairing guy, who can step up into 2nd pairing sure. But we still need a Hamilton type addition.

    10 hours ago, tomh009 said:

Savard is likely third-pairing material, right? What are our youth options for next season? Is Brook the only (young) D in Laval that might see some NHL action?

Nobody is giving Savard 1st pairing money. He's not that kind of player. But he will get 2nd pairing money. I expect him to get a similar contract to Larsson. Ideally you bring him in along with a more offensively talented defender like Barrie and have a 2nd pairing calibre player on the 3rd pairing.  But they can do worse than having Savard on the second pairing.

I would go by facts and not public opinion

I don't give a crap about the public opinion. The FACT is that he committed a crime that involved sex. He photographed a sex act without consent and went out of his way to personally identify her in the picture.  This isn't some kid who sent a nude to another person and was shocked that it got shown to friends.

If you let the little things slide, you just enable worse behavior. You shut down behavior like this and you cut down big time on the number of people who develop into sexual predators. You think Cosby jumped right into drugging women? I'm not calling the kid a predator, but he is certainly more likely to become one than someone who knows it is not ok to do what he did.

Yes, and fortunately for him we are not the judge or jury. Have you never broken a law in your youth? I know I did. Therefore I am never one to pass judgement on others. But hey, if you are an angel, I guess you can pass judgement. Oh wait, that is not what angels do.

I hope you never have to serve on a jury.

    Yes, let’s.

let’s also not entirely downplay his mistake. We can simultaneously acknowledge that he messed up, while helping the young man become a better person. It’s important not to completely forget it, or no lesson is learned.

I’m not one for cancel culture either, just accountability.

He should pay for what he did. I’m just not convinced ending his hockey career is the price he must pay. And he could either spend the next year paying for his crime alone or spend the next year paying for his crime with a network of people that have a vested interest in his future success (Habs organization). He may not be deserving of the support he will get from the Habs organization - but he will benefit from it and hopefully the Habs will too.

This is exactly why all 32 teams should have agreed to the request to not draft him.  Let him prove that he won't repeat this kind of behavior and rehab his character. Make him serve out a punishment of going another year going through the draft process. His crime does not warrent never being allowed to play pro hockey, but it should have at least delayed that career. Stopping predatory behavior begins with stopping lower level crimes like this.

Not his girlfriend. Why was she on her knees in front of this hockey player? How come his judgement as a teen is so important and her's is not?

Not his girlfriend. Why is he having relations of a sexual nature with her? They BOTH showed poor judgement engaging in the act. But to photograph sexual acts and post them on social media without consent is more than poor judgement. It is a crime. And he went out of his way to show off who the picture(s) involved. He put thought into doing that.

9 picks away from the Habs ... 2 of the top-rated QMJHL players still on the board (Xavier Bourgault and Zachary L'Heureux) ... Quebec media will go nuts if one of them isn't taken if they are still there.

Just like when they drafted McDonagh over Angelo Esposito, and when they didn't trade the picks used to take Pacioretty and Subban when Esposito continued to fall.
