  1. Ryder is Dags with better speed, more intelligence, and somewhat better defensive play.

In other words, while both have the main asset of a great shot (Dags might be a better shot), Ryder brings a lot more to the table then Dags.

I am not sure Ryder will ever be more then a younger Zednik type player. ie. 20 to 30 goals a season. I don't see him being a 50 goal scorer, he doesn't have to tools to do that (see his breakaway prowess).

That said, he is a valuable asset and we need guys who can reliablely score up to 30 goals a season. Two million a year seems fair to me for that kind of performance.

  2. Theo has never got past a second round...... He always bombs after a good little run.

Theo is the biggest let down in history of goaltending

You are entitled to your opinion, but he had complete crap teams around him in those series and those were teams who probably would not have been in the playoffs without him.

I realize you have a very low opinion of Theo and you are entitled to it, but I think theo did some great things, is still plenty young, and can have a great future. I have never heard a hockey commentator say he was a bad goalie or over rated, in fact, they ususally refer to him as a money goalie who plays better under pressure. He is having a terrible year, I will give you that.

  3. Is Gainey on crack??????????????????? Why trade Theo for a sub-par goalie when we are have two on the team in Huet and Danis. This doesn't help the habs now and in the future. Please Bob say it ain't so.

I don't think Aeb is a bad goalie, but the issue has always been the playoffs. He does not step it up in the playoffs.

there is a reason that the Avs have been looking to trade him all year and are willing to take a chance on Theo getting back in form. They obviously believe Theo can take them farther and I agree with them. Doesn't mean he will, but he could.

  4. Well maybe your friends were spoiled by years of Roy? This time, maybe both teams win, goalies can turn round when they get a fresh start.

Done is done, but it may not be finished -- "Abby" (is that the best we can do?) may be out of here before what is it, 3:00 EST Thurs. We'll see but the team has changed dramatically so much for Gainey not making moves...

Theo might turn it around, but when has abby ever proven he can? I hope you are correct and there is another shoe to drop on this one.

  5. I can't believe people are placing all their bets on Huet. He played a few great games, but he has never proved himself a number 1 guy in the long haul. In fact, he looked like crap the last few games (he was tired, but still, a playoff run is worse).

If we were getting Luongo I would have no worries, but if we are going into next season with Huet as our number one then I for one think we are taking a very big gamble.

  6. I always thought the tandem goaltender system is best, keeps the pair in healthy competition, coach can switch to whoever is hot the other can rest and work on his game and wait. A Huet/Aebischer tandem works fine for me especially when we clear several million dollars of cap space.

Stick-switching Théo can't play the puck, the breakout game is important in the new NHL with fast puck development, anyway Théo was probably screwed in Montréal the day he got his huge contract, remember there were no expectations on him the year he got the trophies, this year the pressure helped sink him.

...So, biggest problem now, we have to think of a nickname for David Aebischer.

    "Aebs"?

    "Bish"?

    ...yeesh

Well my Av Fan friends called Aeb the biggest barrier to winning the cup... :(

  7. Regardless, this was the same goaltending trying to carry us before the trade.

Great team chemistry, when theo not in the dressing room, i'm not going to speculate, but we have 1 more amigo to go....and i wouldn't be surprised to see another major deal go down

No it isn't. We had a guy who has proven he can play at a very high level if he turned it around. Now we have a guy we know will not reach those heights, even if he is a bit more consistent.

The NHL is full of examples of top goaltenders sucking, then getting back to greatness. remember Belfour, he was finished, done, then played great for the leafs. Remember Roy. Remember Brodeur earlier this season.

Now I am not sure if Theo would return to form or not, but it was a possibility (another example is Jagr, who we all knew could be awesome, but was inconsistent year to year). I don't think there is any evidence that Aeb is capable of being anything more the a decent goalie.

As for your Amigo stuff, none of us knows what goes on in the room and that is just speculation.

Still, if we use the 3 million in cap space wisely, it might be worth it. If we blow it on a Bonk V2.0, I think it was a mistake. Time will tell. :)

  8. Still not sure I like this. I don't think Huet has really proved much other then he is capable of an 8 game hot streak. Remember that Theo has done way more then that over his career, yet now he is considered crap by many on this board. Huet has a long way to go before I think he is a legitimate number 1 goaltender. Abs is a number one, but not a great one.

They better get someone who can score if they are going to make the playoffs and go anywhere because they now have average goaltending, IMHO.

oh, and I agree Theo has not played great, but we know he can be better, we have seen it. don't be surprised if he returns to form next year with a fresh start.

  9. Wow, I guess something had to give, but don't be surprised if he returns to form and we are all complaining about this in a year or two. :(

The only way I see this working is if Gainey plans on going after Luongo in the off season.

On the other hand, Theo might be done, but that was what everyone said about Roy. :(

  10. Come on people, Ryder does put a good effort in most nights, he just isn't a good skater so he looks like he isn't trying. Oh and by the way he is the leading goal scorer on this team while playing with numerous centers and LW's. As for Ribiero, i could play with Kovalev and Perez and look good. Kovalev on most nights takes the puck out of the zone himself, and controls the puck in the offensive zone for long periods of time. Therefore this line spends less time in the D zone. I don't think Ribiero has improved defensively. Although i will say his work ethic has improved lately.

If you watch carefully, Ribs has been the first guy coming back to help the D, supports them down low, and has been taking the slot. This is a great improvement for him, even if it has lowered his offensive production somewhat. He is also not over committing so much in the offensive zone and getting caught too deep when they don't really have control.

  11. still when one of your line mates struggles you need to put a better effort and make things happen...

ryder has alot of talent..I,d just like to see him work a bit harder

I won't argue with you there.

Frankly, Ryder has not looked great all year when you take his game as a whole. His shot is there and when he gets that perfect pass he can score. However, his passing sucks, his effort sucks, etc.

Is it just a coincidence that Ribs line has been better defensively since Ryder moved up, while Koivu's line has done worse then before. Perhaps Carbo needs to work on Ryder when he is done beating defensive awareness into Ribs. :)

  12. Just to point out that Ryder has tailed off playing with Koivu. Kovalev picked up with Riberio (and vice versus).

I just don't think Koivu has played that great lately and that really hurts Ryder, who as people said needs to be setup. Ribs and Ryder clicked well because Ribs and him have played so much together.

I have always had the view that Ryder rarely makes a goal happen, he is the guy who buries it. Ribs rarely shot and was always looking to setup someone, hence he worked well with Ryder and Dags. Koivu has a totally different style of play then Ribs, he passes from different areas, he goes to the net more, etc. It will take Ryder time to learn where to be for Koivu's style, versus where to be for Ribs' style of play.

When Koivu picks up his game (he needs some rest) and Ryder and him get more comfortable with each other, I suspect things will improve for both. I also see Kovy and Ribs getting more use to each other and they seem to be playing much better lately.

  13. This whole season has been terrible between these teams. At best, the series should be about even, but if you recall the BS calls in the previous games that allowed the leafs to win or get in overtime for points, you realize how the leafs can completely dominate a team...

I would hate to meet the leafs in the playoffs, can you just imagine how bad the reffing would be in that series....

Ah well, have to beat Boston now.

Oh, and I still think it was a terrible mistake making Huet play both these games.. way too much. Theo would not have played that much, they would have given the backup one of them.
