  1. If I remember correctly, if you buy a player out, their salary still counts towards your cap. Unless you mean they did it during the time when teams were allowed to buy out players b4 the cap was put into place. (There was a window where teams were able to do this before the 2005-2006 season)

We can definitely fit both Souray and Markov into our cap next season. The only problem is whether or not they want to stay in Montreal.

You can buy a player out over 2-3 years like the Leafs did with Domi. They owed him 1.5 million and paid it out over 2 seasons creating a $750,000 cap hit for this year and next instead of 1.5 mil for this season.

So you can lessen the hit, but the amount will remain against the cap.

  2. Good analysis, but you overlooked one particular factor. I'm pretty sure that at any given time you cannot burst the cap in annual salary either. So that we couldn't acquire 10M, althought that'd certainly fit in the annual budget, at that given time our yearly payroll would be 52M and that'd be forbidden... anyways, that was my understanding, I could be wrong.

I believe you could acquire 10M worth of players at the deadline if they were unrestricted next season.

If they were not unrestricted I believe you would have to trade, release or buyout somebody to fit them under

next season's cap. New Jersey was way over the cap and sent guys to the minors, bought salaries out and left Mogilny on the IR until they got under the cap in order to activate Elias last season.

  3. yeah, I think we should just leave Kessel alone. But Lats should be on there somewhere, agreed... and Higgins isn't there because he wouldn't be considered a "Young" star anymore... he's almost 24 I believe.

Personally I do not care, just seem like strange selections to me.

Steen is born in 84/Higgins 83 as is Keri Lehtonen. Steen has no business being there.

Steen scored 10 points in the first 40 games of the season and 1/4 of his points came in 1 game?

Who is bashing Kessel? Because he has had a mediocre last 2 seasons and dropped from consensus number 1 to number 5 and is putting up ordinary numbers he should be in the young guns game because he had cancer?

I judge what I have seen on the ice and he has been invisible in 6 of the 7 games I have seen him play.

He is -11 and is averaging a point every 3 games. It is not called the Young Mediocre Game.

I would just like to know the process, thassit

  4. EASTERN CONFERENCE

    Goaltender

    Kari Lehtonen, Atl.

    Defencemen

    Mike Green, Wash.

    Paul Ranger, T.B.

    Andrej Meszaros, Ott.

    Ryan Whitney, Pitt.

    Forwards

    Patrick Eaves, Ott.

    Phil Kessel, Bos.

    Evgeni Malkin, Pitt.

    Zach Parise, N.J.

    Jordan Staal, Pitt.

    Alex Steen, Tor.

    Thomas Vanek, Buf.

Just wondering who picks this team.

Patrick Eaves? Alex Steen? Phil Kessel?

Chris Higgins could not make this team? Lats has had a way better year than Kessel and is on par with Steen and Eaves for points at 19 years old.

    Interesting choices

  5. Ole Ole is a taunting song ... Not as bad as, Nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, de-e-o, goodbye ... but taunting none the less.

Kovalev does seem to be stepping it up recently.

I agree with Habsfan88 I don't think it is a taunt. I believe it's roots are from Football and that it is a cheer.

I may be wrong. I have heard the Bell Center sing it in a 0-0 tie, so I don't see it

as a taunt. It is not like they were singing Nah Nah Nah....goodbye

  6. Absolutely, he's started to step up his game.

Loved that tape to tape pass he made to Plex for the breakaway

What was up with them saying that Markov was hit by a stick from the bench when the replay clearly showed the sabres stick hit him.

    They Suck

Neale does essentially 82 Leaf games a year, no shock with the bias. That is the CBC for you.

Cole has the most exciting voice of all the announcers but I am sure he called about 3 Recchi from Stevens and Lemiuex goals tonight to go with some huge saves from Barasso!!

  7. The NHL and Reebok have been designing and testing the new uniforms for 30 months. That quiet period has spawned several myths, Jennings told USA TODAY. No, NHL players won't wear form-fitting garb like Olympic speedskaters. No, the new uniforms won't eliminate horizontal stripes, although some clubs will experiment with vertical striping next season.

Let's hope this report is correct. The Habs are so tradition oriented that I doubt they will remove the horizontal striping.

  8. Gary Bettman has gone on record as saying that the teams control what goes on the uniform and the NHL has only dictated the materials and jersey style.

I believe the image that everybody is in an uproar over is a fans interpretation.

So either Bettman is full of shit, or if the jersey's change it is the Habs organization who is responsible.
