  1. well, they better start taking shots.. not that I expect AK to do squat.. nice hit earlier, but now he is standing around in the offensive zone again doing nothing.

Right now it sounds like Halak is keeping them in the game ... can't win unless you start getting some chances.

  2. I feel your pain...that is my usual situation here in Qatar. Ironically, fox sports is carrying the versus feed of the Habs tonight but it is now 3:49AM at the 2nd intermission so tomorrow is going to suck  :hlogo:

Yeah, that's not good. It'll get worse for me, too -- I'll be in the UK next week so CJAD may be the best I can do ... and even then the hours will force me to do IV caffeine to make it through early mornings at work!

  3. It really doesn't matter. What does matter is we won home ice and we have to seize the advantage. Stats smats blah blah. History will be made. One thing about hockey is certain. There's no Einstein who can tell the outcome of 4 series from here on in. We have a split and WE ARE IN IT!

What else happens is anyones' guess. We don't know!

    That's hockey! Go Habs Go

As all the investment materials say, "past performance may not necessarily be an indicator of future returns."

We have a chance, the team appears to be grasping it -- and maybe, just maybe, history will be made. For any given scenario, somebody, sometime, has to do it for the first time. ^_^

  4. Trust me, if I could find a team that did what the habs are doing that resulted in a Stanley Cup, then I would be

drudging up the miracle season as my rationale for being sucked in.

    (...)

That is the only scenario in which I can attach my hopes to.

I guess it all depends on your expectations -- whether it's the Cup or nothing?

For me, the team's play this post-season is already a positive. Halak has been very good, and our boys have played as a team and worked hard. Beating the #1 regular-season team is more than I expected after we backed into the playoffs, and they clearly haven't given up yet.

Making it into the conference finals would be awesome. Playing for the Cup in the finals would be huge. I still remember the '70s, but those years are long gone, and at this point I'd be happy even with a solid playoff run. I'll worry about our ability to go all the way and win the Cup when the time comes -- if it comes.

  5. Hey, if you want to ignore history be my guest. This will not last playing this way. No team in the history of hockey

has gone 4 rounds of hockey to win the Cup being outshot by 12 shots per game. (That doesn't even take into account blocks and misses)

I am not here to tell you what you want to hear. I offer my observations built on 30 years of watching hockey.

Love it or leave it, I don't really care. If you want the media circle jerk, go to TSN for your opinions.

I've been watching the Habs since '77 so I have seen a few games myself, too.

And I'm not saying that TSN is right. But I do think it's possible to beat Pittsburgh, even if we get outshot, as long as we keep the scoring chances down, and Halak plays well. If we make it to the next round, whether it be against Boston or Philadelphia, it would be a very different team we're playing, and we might be able to change the style of game for those.

Basically what I'm saying is that I'm not ready to write them off yet. Winning this series will be hard, and the next one harder. But I believe we have a chance, as slim as it may be.

  6. The most likely result will be a cave in similar to 2002 with Carolina. With every save, Halak puts about 5-10 thousand dollars on his next contract. This is a mirage folks.

I guess we have to have a few pessimists in the crowd, just for balance.

Nobody gave us a chance against Washington. Yet we're playing in the second round, they are not.

Nobody gave us a chance against Pittsburgh. Yet we now have home-game advantage, even with Markov out of the lineup.

But I guess we really have no chance. We should just mail in the rest of the games and let Pittsburgh take another run at the Cup.

  7. Didn't get the chance to watch game 1. But if you feel that this was a good game, then good for you. Not a big fan of 55 minutes of Dump and Chase.

It's better than a neutral zone trap, still.

And in the end I'd rather Martin (and the team) do what it takes to win, whether it's pretty or not. And with teams like Washington and Pittsburgh that have the league's top scorers on them, that means cutting down on their scoring chances, otherwise we simply can't keep up.

  8. On the other hand...add the Halak mystique to a team game that relegates the opposition to perimeter shots, and you have a recipe for a goalie getting inside the bad guys' heads. So I suppose I shouldn't complain too much about the habs gettin' no respect. ^_^

Exactly ... after this afternoon's game, we've certainly messed with their heads. Halak and the rest of the team did awesome work (in keeping the slot clear and clearing rebounds away, specifically), and MAF looked at best ordinary.

  9. Hope the boys realize that neither Crosby nor Malkin brought their A game.

Crosby: 1 shot, no points, -2

Malkin: 3 shots, no points, -1

Crosby averaged four shots a game during the regular season. I think our boys had something to do with his lack of results, too ...

  10. I am worried about Halak, the one thing that is telling so far is under pressure Halak has not faired well, last three games, olympics.

I wouldn't put a lot of weight on this particular game, though. As a goalie, this is the kind of game you hate: your team applies pressure for long time, you stand around and wait, and then there is a flurry of attack by the other team. You don't get into a rhythm, and it's easy to lose your focus.

  11. Well, the good news is that most of the team have shown up for this game. The 4th line is not looking so good, but maybe JM will actually shorten the damn bench and go for it.

I'm feeling good about the level of effort/intensity -- they are playing like they belong in the playoffs. Too bad we couldn't get that consistently before.

  12. For my part, I'd like to see the points system they used during the Olympics.

    Reg / OT win = 3 pts

    SH win = 2 pts

    SH/OT loss = 1 pt

    Reg loss = 0 pt

Exactly. There should be some added incentive to win in regulation. Although I'd leave the OT win at 2 points as well.

  13. I’m not especially worried about changing the three point game, but it is important to know which teams have been benefitting from it – and consequently might be overrated heading into the post-season.

Not quite the point of your OP, but the extra point really annoys me -- there should only be two points handed out regardless of the outcoming.

Or else take the approach of the English Premiership soccer, and give the regulation-time winner three points.
