  1. Finally, I like that Gainey is stopping there for now. There is only one available UFA that can make a difference in Montreal, and it's Mats Sundin. If we can't sign him, we need to start the season with the players in place, stay away from the Huselius and other overrated support players, keep our cap space, and wait for a trade opportunity that will bring us that impact player. For all we know, there could be another Thornton-like opportunity presenting itself.

I don't know that I agree about Huselius being overrated, but Columbus signed him yesterday, so it's a moot point in any case!

And, yes, I, too, would be happy to start the season with the current crew (plus a signed contract with Halak). We might even have some cap room come trade deadline ...

  2. I wonder whether Gainey shouldn't make (another?) attempt at talking to Selanne. His skills are still there, the chemistry with Koivu is there, and the Ducks have only $1M or so of cap space left. Playing with Koivu and the opportunity to challenge for another Cup could give him pause ... and maybe even get him to seriously consider joining the Habs.

  3. I wonder if Halak will bolt for Europe, or maybe stay hoping he can steal the job...

What we need is to get a solid vet goalie who is willing to play behind Price (If Gainey is going to insist on Price, at least get him some help).

I think Halak has every chance to steal the job, if he plays well enough. And if he does, there is no point paying for a veteran backup (who will not be a top goalie anyway) -- let's spend that cap room elsewhere instead.

  4. I think that Price will start and his teammates will pick him up. It will be a lot of pressure on him

if he does start that is for sure. Another poor performance will bring out the media daggers.

The bloom will be off the rose.

Basically it comes down to this:

If you start Price and he has a bad game you have to go to Halak, but it may be too late to win the series.

If you start Halak and he has a bad game you have to go back to Price, but it may be too late to win the series.

So you really have to go with the goalie that has the best chance of winning the next game if we still want to get somewhere in these playoffs.

  5. THAT is why I think he will start Game 4. It is the way Gainey operates, he does not make quick, rash decisions

    based on some bad goals.

Not rash decisions, no. But the soft goals do span six games, and number in the double digits, so I do think Gainey and Carbo will be doing some thinking yet before making the final decision for the next game.

  6. Again, I'm not here to troll, I like both teams a lot (one more than the other right now :D ), but Downie was going for the puck.

No trolling offence taken. But personally, if I were a Flyers fan, I would have have been major-league pissed off at Downey and Hatcher for those penalties. But then maybe they (Philly fans) are used to that kind of play, based on their regular-season penalty and suspension record ...

  7. That wisdom would have put Halak in Game 7. This is about winning a series, but it is also about

experience. If Gainey feels that Price is the goalie of the future he will give him another shot and

see what he is made of. He has responded all year and if he does not on Wednesday then you will

    see Halak.

From Gainey and Carbo's history this season, it is most likely that Price will start.

And if he has another mediocre game? Is Halak then the goalie of the future?

  8. It was a BS call. Boullion spun at the last second. Granted, it was a board, but not worthy of 5 and a game. Boullion got right back up and even hit hatch right back. There was no intent to injure, and it wasn't even a vicious hit. and It's entirely possible that it was just the visor that cut him.

Whether it should have been two, four or five minutes, it was a fine attempt by Hatcher to get the Habs back into the game. Just like Downey tried to spot us an early lead by tripping Price. Unfortunately we didn't take advantage ...

  9. Screw that the team played harder in front of Halak in the 3rd....

Besides...didn't somebody have a Jaro the Hero avatar up before??

I believe it was KoZed...whoever it was...put it back up!

I'll go for that ... if Halak starts game 4 badly you can always go back to Price. But right now I think it's the right bet to take.

  10. He has been weak tonight, but where is Kovalev? Where are the Kostitsyn's? Where is the blame on Markov?

    etc etc.

The scary thing is, half the team has been invisible and if Price had played great they would be up in this game

    and the series.

If Price had played a top game tonight, it'd be 0-0 or maybe 0-1.

If the offence had played better (IMHO they aren't quite horrible) it might be 1-3 or 2-3.

Now, with goaltending and offence, we might actually have a lead ... both need to improve. You can't lay blame on just one.

But if the opposing goalie is hot, you need a pretty hot goalie yourself to have a chance.

  11. I don't know if everybody has noticed but the Habs are grooming Price to be their starter of the future.

Lessons will be learned this playoff like it or not. They will be going with him all the way unless something

really drastic happens. And even so they will test his mettle again and again.

I do agree that's their view ... and yet Halak isn't exactly chopped liver, either. In the longer term (ie beyond this series and the rest of the playoffs) it may be a challenge to keep both Price and Halak, but having two strong young goalies is a fabulous asset. And as long as the starting role is not an automatic gift, they can motivate and drive each other to stronger performances, too.

But what should they do now ... not so sure about that.
