  1. The Athletic has been publishing Scott Wheeler's annual prospect pool rankings for all 32 teams. The Habs are down in 11th from 8th last year, but this makes sense due to the "graduations".

No longer eligible Graduated (NHL regulars):

    • Cole Caufield (1st in 2022)
    • Juraj Slafkovsky (NR)
    • Kaiden Guhle (2nd)
    • Arber Xhekaj (NR)
    • Jordan Harris (4th)

No longer eligible Graduated (23 or older):

    • Jesse Ylonen (11th)
    • Brett Stapley (18th)

That's a significant chunk of our prospect pool now playing regularly in the Habs lineup!

    Now, his rankings:

    1. Lane Hutson (NR)
    2. Sean Farrell (3rd)
    3. Owen Beck (NR)
    4. Filip Mesar (NR)
    5. Joshua Roy (7th)
    6. Logan Mailloux (NR)
    7. Justin Barron (3rd for COL)
    8. Riley Kidney (9th)
    9. Adam Engstrom (NR)
    10. Jan Mysak (5th)
    11. Oliver Kapanen (13th)
    12. Vincenz Rohrer (NR)
    13. Cedric Guindon (NR)
    14. Jakub Dobes (NR)
    15. Xavier Simoneau (16th)

I think Wheeler is basically projecting the top nine to become NHL regulars, with the later ones having a chance but less likely.

Players considered but not in top 15:

    • Mattias Norlinder (8th)
    • William Trudeau
    • Gianni Fairbrother
    • Cayden Primeau (6th)
    • Dmitri Kostenko
    • Luke Tuch
    • Rhett Pitlick
    • Petteri Nurmi
    • Jayden Struble (10th)
    • Jared Davidson
    • Miguel Tourigny
    • Emil Heineman

Even before the 2023 draft, the Habs already have a strong youth generation, with 11 forwards (Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, Slafkovsky, Ylonen and six top-nine prospects) and eight D-men (Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj, Kovacevic and four top-nine prospects). (Goaltending is thinner with only Montembeault as likely.) Not all top-nines will make it, but then some additional ones will -- plus the 2023 draft class. And we will surely have some veterans playing as well. I am looking forward to the youthful Habs of the next few years!

P.S. I do have some trial subscription codes for The Athletic in case anyone wants to read in more detail. Send me a PM if you would like one.

Why wouldn’t Chicago simply retain 50% themselves, if they can get a 1st? Why would they want Drouin???unless they think Drouin would be a gaurantee them Bedard!

What he's proposing is a double retention, Chicago keeps 50% (for example), Habs keep 25% and the final buyer only pays 25%.

I am good with that. Let's also hope that Washington and Pittsburgh go into overtime.

An OT win for Washington is the perfect result. And it looks like two points to each of Buffalo and Detroit; Florida is fifth in the wild card race by points percentage, and the Islanders are only one point further behind.

  4. The Athletic actually mentioned this in mid-December:

    Quote

(...) the Canadiens have quietly hired someone that fits the description of what Molson was talking about.

Jean-François Ménard is a mental performance coach who has been hired full-time by the Canadiens. He has an office in Brossard. He regularly works with the players. He has experience working at Cirque du Soleil and has worked with numerous Olympic athletes; his LinkedIn profile states that his clients have won 17 Olympic medals since 2016.

Loved Belzile’s game. Montembeault was great.

It's only 21 games but Montembeault has really upped his play this year. Between some specific aspects of his play and increased confidence, his GSAA/GSAE numbers this year are very much in the starting goalie territory. Whether he can maintain that level of play remains to be seen, but it's definitely encouraging.

I think Tocchet will probably give the team a lot more structure and defensive rigour...but things are so sour around this franchise, I find it hard to believe he'll enjoy the "new coach bounce."

As much as I think the situation stinks, I still want to see that bounce and have the Canucks pull well ahead of the Habs. :)

One outside the top 5 pick for PLD? That seems like a bargain for the Habs but what if Mickayov(sp) falls to that level? Interesting dilemma for HuGort but I doubt bey much that the Jets would be interested in that deal.

It's a risk as PLD will have only one year left under team control until he becomes a UFA. Unless they can do a sign and trade -- but as the Jets have not been able to sign him for the long term, they surely get less value for the trade.

One of the things that has surprised me this year has been the play of Montembeault, goalies can be difficult to judge because a lot depends on the team in front of him but he was very impressive last night and has been for a lot of games this year.  The 2 year contract seems like a pretty good deal right now.

He’s a respectable 20th in the league in terms of save percentage — but eighth in goals saved above expected, as the Habs give up more high-danger shots.

As you said, it looks good right now, but let’s see whether he can sustain this for the rest of the season and into the next.
