Would they put him on LTIR to free up some cap space?
-
11 players -- that's half the roster. Admittedly Price and Byron have been on LTIR all season, but even excluding them, we have six (!) forwards injured.

Sitting with 7th, 13th picks today.
7th and 10th by percentage; Panthers have played 2-3 more games than the three teams just behind them.

Monty isnt exactly playing bad, nor are the Habs really. This game is a dumpster fire primarily due to the reffing.
5-on-5 shots are 15-5 and high-danger chances 10-3. And, yeah, Panthers have another 10 high-danger chances on the power play, but it's not only the refs. (Too many men on the ice, twice, was unquestionable anyway. I don't know who's managing the shift changes (apparently not St-Louis) but that's a coaching issue.

This game is just a dumpster fire. Too many men on the ice twice within two minutes. Four PPG allowed. 33 shots on goal. Five goals allowed by Motembeault ... and yet that's still better than the 5.55 xGA. What a disaster.

FLA now has two injured goalies … I still remember Habs’ last season.

Arpon Basu reports that it’s a left-knee injury.

It wouldn't shock me if they slipped into the last wild card spot. Definitely a possibility. I expect they will make the playoffs or come close which is why I think 14-20. Pittsburgh seems to be faltering and their stars are old. Still a long ways to go.
It may be the PIT will slip. But if they want to grab that spot, they'll also have to beat out NYI, BUF, PHI and DET, all of whom are just as much in the mix as the Panthers are. FLA won't be able to rely on one or two teams faltering to slip into the playoffs, they'll need to outplay five other teams.

He's still a prospect, not a complete player, and he still plays that way (I think). But the Habs' scouting team clearly saw high potential in him, one hopes that they are more skilled at identifying player potential than I am.

They have nothing to tank for, but they also have few assets they can trade. 2026 first?
Caps, Pens, Isles, Sabres, Wings all ahead of them by percentage, and a tough second-half schedule. They have their work cut out for them.

With Matheson back, the tank takes a hit.
Will it really be significant, compared to Guhle?

So, the rest of the season for Slafkovsky and maybe also for Evans. Ouch. And Armia and Drouin for another few weeks doesn't help, either.

Is it too late to put in a request for a late Wi-fi goal?

Maybe 6th rounder material by the deadline?
5th or 6th, doesn't matter all that much, but it'll be nice if they are worth something.

Probably ... there was some traffic though so not clear how well he saw it.
But he's saved a bunch (half a score!) of far more dangerous ones so it balances out, only one goal but xGA is 1.95.

6. in between, multiple rumours have circulated on potential trades, but seems (cannot confirm, waiting for presser) like decision is to wait it out
I think those rumours are more trade proposals ("Habs should try to trade for X because Y") rather than anything involving actual discussions between Hughes and other GMs.

That being said, I hope Montembeault saves at rate ? .910 and looses. I hope the Dach line does well and that none of the pending UFAs gets hurt.
It looks like we might see Allen back in net.

There is only one pending UFA to be concerned about ... and Monahan is already on IR ... Drouin and Dadonov would likely to be useful were they to go on LTIR for the rest of the season than they will be in any trade ... at best, maybe we can give them away.
You never know who might end up being picked up at the deadline, could be someone we think is totally impossible.

Pitlick at centre? Hasn't that experiment backfired enough already? I know they're short on options but yikes.
Drouin missed the morning skate but isn't he expected to play? I would think Pitlick would move to wing with Droun at centre.

I know the NHL is not managed that way, I just feel like a team like EDM may overpay for a player like Xhekaj, compared to what it cost the Has to "develop" him through the system.
The fallacy in this is that while Xhekaj cost us nearly nothing, not even a draft pick, replacing him would not be as easy and certainly not as cheap. The same issue applies in the Premier League, too, selling a player only makes sense if you have a solid pipeline of replacements in your academy team.
That's kind of the same as investing in the stock market: you shouldn't decided whether to sell based on how much you paid for a stock. Instead, you should consider its future value. So, if you can "sell" Chiarot, for example, for a first-round pick because other teams are desperate, you should probably do it because his future value will be lower than it is now. But how much you spent on Chiarot really isn't relevant.

As for the outline, the good news is Montreal has a lot of irons in the fire. There's a few centers with potential in the system, Mesar, Beck, and Kidney to name 3, that have the biggest chance to develop into a #2 center if Dach doesn't fill that role. Most of the top-10 prospects in this year's draft are centers, and it's looking as if Montreal will have 2 picks in there currently. There are potentially good wingers in Roy, Richard, and Ylonen in the system. The real weakness is defense and goalie prospects that aren't in the NHL, but most of the defense prospects are currently in the NHL, which isn't a bad thing. With any luck we get some great development and are able to use some of those prospects that aren't needed to trade for a goalie that works out.
I really believe, for a rebuild, Montreal is in a good place right now. Ultimately it's a dice roll on every prospect, but there's a lot here to roll on.
And, on top of that, we have a solid set of draft picks for what is reputed to be one of the strongest draft classes in recent memory. (You did kind of mention it in talking about centres, but we have 11 picks already now, even before the trade deadline.)

IMO - with or without Montembeault, a big part of the next year will be the search for the post rebuild #1 goalie
It could well be. But we don’t even have a backup yet …

If he keeps it up, he could be worth something at the trade deadline ... IMO he is not part of the future past perhaps next season.
We’ll need two goalies. At the moment we don’t have any sure-fire prospects. Primeau looking increasingly unlikely. And I very much doubt any of Dichow, Dobes or Vrbetic are NHL-ready in 2014, even assuming that they work out.

I have to say that after that first period I really didn't see them coming back to tie this. In the next period, yet.
