This org stills needs top-pairing-quality young D. Even Guhle has not clearly established himself as being at that level. So, although he wasn't a sexy pick, this kid is an important piece. Here's hoping he makes the jump to Laval and flourishes.
Quite right. No one has yet confirmed that he can be a top-pairing D. Guhle has that potential, and arguably Reinbacher and Hutson do, too, but it'll take some time before we know whether any of them can play at that level. Others (such as Engstrom, Mailloux, Barron and Xhekaj) are more likely to have second-pairing ceilings, but they aren't proven yet, either.
Overall, I am very optimistic about our D prospects but they are still very, very young on the typical D development timescale.

It appears to be something to do with one of his sons.

Habs played better than the score suggests.
It was the reverse of the Columbus game, where the score flattered the Habs. This time Primeau could not match Wolf's performance.

Granted, I was pretty young when the Nordiques moved (though at least alive at that time unlike Pelletier) but I don't think too many logical-thinking people could think the Habs unilaterally had the ability to make a team move. That's pretty naive on his end.
Maybe he was referring to the Nordiques being kicked out of the playoffs in the Good Friday Massacre?

They have 14 games remaining compared to the Marlies' 17. I think the odds on Laval playoff success are really long at this point, so the #1 criterion should be player development: do whatever is best for Roy and any other prospects.

The Newhook, Roy, Armia line has been quite good lately. Barring a big trade, the line of Dach, Roy, Newhook next season is going put up numbers.
Agree on Roy. Next year, let's wait and see what trades Hughes pulls off in the summer. Roy-Dach-Newhook could indeed be great but let's see how many centres we have on the roster.

It would be great if the Habs could pickup someone on waivers so that Roy can be sent back.
It would suck for the kid, he has earned his NHL minutes, but it would help the most the prospects being developed in LVL and it would not hurt Roy’s in the long run.
I can't see them taking on another contract right now. Especially as Laval's playoff chances are marginal at best.

Just watching first-period highlights ... that was a super play by Slafkovsky to find Suzuki behind him and open.

It’s no secret that I want losses for better draft pick. However I want Slafkovsky, Caufield, Suzuki, Matheson, Newhook to keep putting up points, especially on the PP.
It would also be nice to see progress on D, which would hopefully reduce the goals against ... 🙂

I think the biggest difference is last year Caufield was on fire on the left side one-timer. This year, he's cooled off so the team has to look for other options. For development of the whole team, that's a good thing, especially if Slafkovsky becomes serviceable as a right side one-timer.
... and because Slafkovsky is another good option, Caufield will also get fewer passes and thus fewer one-timer goals. Good for the team, less good for Caufield's personal stats.

Very true, but it’s intriguing that the Habs ships out Allen and the very next game he plays, he steps in and bags a SO. That’s the “statement” part: “you FINALLY made room for me? Well watch this.”
If a goalie is capable of playing shutout hockey as a statement, wouldn’t he do it more often, maybe to gain starter status?
No, I think Primeau played a good game and had a few pucks bounce his way. But not likely an intentional statement.

If we don’t get Celebrini, I think my two two choices regardless of where we draft are Dadinov and Parakh. Both look like players that can totally take over a game. That’s something we lacked outside of the goal position since Lafleur.
Apart from Celebrini, I don't think anyone else in the draft is considered likely to turn into an elite player. First line, maybe, but not a top-10 (in that position) in the league. So, let's not expect a second coming of Lafleur ...

Obviously the medical/training staff is recommending it ... but when the Habs describe it as a "therapy day" it clearly implies some sort of treatment is involved, not just rest.
It could be. Or it could be just obfuscation like the dreaded "lower-body injury"! Long gone are the days when we'd actually know whether someone is seriously injured or not.

My bet is that he is on an AHL team somewhere, or goes home/overseas ... but you are correct that only time will tell.
Let's plan to check at the end of September and find out who is right! 😊

Can we please just sit him until he doesn't need treatment every practice day ... don't care if he is playing well, the health of an emerging young player is more important to me.
It could be that those days off are exactly what the new medical team is recommending. We don't know whether there is a minor injury or whether they are just making sure he has enough rest to make it to game 82 without being exhausted.

I don’t think Ylonen will be on the roster next season whatever the route.
I think he will probably find a spot on another team where he is a better fit for their needs. But that's just a guess, we'll know more in six months.

Interesting comments on Allen from Montembeault and Primeau on Arpon Basu's weekly notebook on the Athletic. It seems that Allen was spending more time mentoring Montembeault as opposed to Primeau, whether because of perceived potential or because Montembeault was more receptive.
QuoteFor Montembeault, losing Allen meant losing a mentor, a support system, someone who believed in him and pumped his tires every chance he got. When Allen got traded Friday, Montembeault sent him a long text message thanking him for everything he did for him, and he got one back telling him to keep pushing and that he deserves this opportunity to be the unquestioned No. 1 goalie.
“He was always supporting me,” Montembeault said, “and he was one of the best teammates I ever had.”
For Primeau, however, while Allen had the same attributes and value to him as a teammate, Allen in some ways did the opposite for his career. While Montembeault had Allen to lean on, to Primeau, he was a roadblock. Primeau obviously can’t come right out and say that. But that’s the truth (...)
“A lot of stuff I’m going to keep personal, but one of the main things was he’s had such a long career, and just seeing how he handles himself on and off the ice, how he is as a person to his teammates,” Primeau said of Allen. “Yeah, he’s one of the good ones and it’s tough to see him go, but his time here went well and I wish him the best. Just excited for the opportunity.”

One thing to remember is that a lot of hits means that your team probably doesn't have the puck much: legal hits require the opposing player to be the puck carrier. So, top teams have fewer hits, all other things being equal.

Surprisingly, Pezz had 8 hits and only played 6:45 mins.
The top line played 21+ minutes (almost 25 for Suzuki!) and Newhook/Armia played over 17, so there really wasn't a lot of ice time left over for the third and fourth lines.

Now, as far a Primeau goes. I hope that he emerges like MOntembeault did, once he gains in experience. He is just starting and at this point in his career has has as much promise and opportunity to establish himself as Montembeault had. I have faith in the future.
We'll see what Primeau can do. This season he has been far better than the last two--I was ready to write him off after those--but it really is a small sample size. We'll have a better idea after next season.

The Leafs really should have been called for that slash on Armia's stick ... although it probably wouldn't have changed the result.

Xhekaj having a rough one. Got bailed out on his first big mistake but the second big one ends in a goal. He cant keep letting McCann behind him.
This year is OK for learning experiences. The key is learning from them, and not repeating them next year.

What a pass by Slafkovsky to start that play and what a goal by Matheson
Not only the goal, but Matheson did exactly what St-Louis wants them to do: he skated hard and found open space, and that's what put him in position to score the goal.

5-2 final, with Mailloux and Andersson scoring in the third. 1g+3a for Gignac, 28/30 saves for Kaskisuo.

And Slafkovsky is still only 20, almost four years younger than Kotkaniemi.
